Well picked up the Elongated Man 3 pack yesterday and most of the diecast figures, just missing Supes and MM.
So the only new single card figure is The Atom, right?
Naw...I know it ain't new, but after spending more than a decade with figures that can't do much more than stand, as you pointed out, I was pretty thrilled to see articulation was being attempted. When it didn't work right off the bat though, people spazzed and now it seems like they're taking it away, which is a shame.
You guys remember the GI Joe action figures? They looked great, and had moveable waists, wrists, knees, elbows and the other five points! They were the most fun to pose because they always looked good, and on the whole were much more versitile than any of the other figures I owed. And on top of it all, they're a little smaller than the original Hasbro B:TAS figures.
I guess if hinges and screws are such a big deal for you than figures with the five-point articulation are right up your alley. But a Flash figure that can't look like it is running? A Lois figure who can't sit down at her desk? A Batgirl capable of doing little more than stand around grinning? A Green Arrow incapable of kneeling down and taking aim at a crook? A Wonder Woman with two immobile stick legs jutting out from her pinched torso? That's a crying shame.
And while I'm at it, where did the fabric capes go?

Call me crazy, but isn't an ordinary Elongated Man figure a waste of plastic? He can't elongate! That puts him one down from the Masters of the Universe guys, who, despite sharing the same body, at least had their own action feature!
Couldn't they have maybe used that super bendy plastic on his arms or neck, and kept his legs and torso rigid? Then at least parts of him would be able to elongated a bit...
...yikes, that doesn't sound right. But you get my drift. These figures aren't much of a step-up from the customs we've seen produced by fans over the years. Same bodies, with new heads.
Funny you should mention those, because they were the first figures that sprung to mind when I started complaining about poseable figures. I always hated GI Joe in general, but my brother was really into it and had loads of the figures, and I would always make fun of him when he started crying because another figure had inevitably became lose-jointed and useless. The figures would look extremely undignified lying on the floor with their arms, legs, wrists, etc, sprawling in all directions like some mangled hit'n-run victim. I could almost see a smug, superior grin on the face of my rigid, statuesque, Combat Belt Batman figure.Originally Posted by DisneyBoy
That sounds like it would have been a really cool idea, however from the sounds of it, they are just making "maquette" style figures with very little articulation to begin with so I doubt we'll be see any kind of "action" features. Still think your idea would have been coolOriginally Posted by DisneyBoy

Oh I hate fabric-anything on my action figures. It always looks tacky to me. The new all plastic all the time method that the JL toys has makes me so happy.Originally Posted by DisneyBoy
As far as articulation goes, since I've stopped playing with my toys I've not been a fan of it. I think the more a figure can do only means the more that can go wrong with it. Loose joints being my main concern. So stiff and upright is alright by me (except for the Ronin Warriors figures, I love the spring loaded joints on those bad boys). I don't really like to pose my figures though so thats probably why I don't mind lack of articulation. I only own two Marvel Legends toys and much prefer the simple streamlined approach that the DCAU toys employ.
The one thing I don't get is why are there so many duplicates in this release. 2 bats ,supes, and flashes? I wish they would have took this time to give us valid repaints of say the ABW outfits on the core seven (or some other variant of the core seven that isn't lame like the mission vision stuff - a good example of this is the J'onn clear figure). That would have given us true fans an added incentive to buying the same figures over again and kids wouldn't have really cared. Also it seems kind of criminal to me that Green Arrow/Green Lantern aren't in the same set. That just ain't right. I would have much preferred a 2 heroes/ 1 villian layout on these 3 packs. 1 of the core seven in their ABW (or other variant) outfit, one totally new hero, and one badguy.
Don't get me wrong, I love the line, but there are just a few things I would hae done differently.
Personally, I don't mind the duplicates of the core seven since I didn't have the articulated versions, yet, anyway. It's weird that J'Onn has probably the best variants of any toy ever, as far as them making actual sense for fans -- phasing, Martian version -- that's really cool. It's a lot better than yet another Arctic Ski Blast Rainbow Mohawk Batman or something. That said, the Mattel guys were intrigued by our "Better World" variant suggestion awhile back, so that could still happen. There is a variant JLU version of John Stewart rolling out now with a bald head and goatee...
I guess a stretchy Elongated Man would be cool -- but the sculpt on his head is so funny that I can't knock the execution. He's got this cocky grin and I can't wait to stick him next to Booster so he can flip him crap all day (hey, there's an action feature -- now with crap-flipping grin!).
I read today that Hawkgirl 10" mass release has been pinned down to be in late spring/early summer. If Toys R US lasts another year, they'll probably turn up there. Mattel says Wal*Mart may be discontinuing carrying JL figures, but they had decided against carrying the Titans figures and had to change their mind later when they saw how popular those were. No one wants to shop at Wal*Mart anyway.
Harley, Atom is the only other new character turning up at the moment, but isn't everywhere yet. I'd expect the other three packs and single cards (that we've seen so far) to turn up sometime this spring.
BTW- does anyone know where you can buy series one JL figures online? Specifically Bats/Supes/Flash? A friend of mine just got into the show and I want to get her the figs for her b-day or something. I know I could just buy the unlimited ones, but she really likes first run figures still MOC so...
Thanks for the info PeterFries, guess I'm searching for The Atom until the others come out.Originally Posted by PeterFries
God I hope and pray that they do "Better World" variants, it seem like such an easy tie in.

Actually, i agree with you there. It seems pointless to just have him without some kind of indication that he can stretch. I dont know about stretching rubber (hey, i'm totally being selfish here. I like statuesque figures now, but i'm sure a stretchy fig would be awesome for any kid), but i'd like to have seen him with longer arms than the others, or his torso stretched somehow, just a simple pose with some indications that he is the stretch guy. but whatever.Originally Posted by DisneyBoy
anyway, anyone have any news on when the aquaman 3 pack is coming out AND if he'll be single carded? last i heard he wasnt going to be. thanks. peace.

BTW, one of the Mattel guys posted this today:
I know Mattel is far from perfect, but we are trying to get product that can hit what kids want, and still be relevant for the collectors. As you guys can see, there are wildly conflicting opinions - articulation vs. non, plastic vs cloth capes, etc. We had two key goals with this line:
1) Great value - $5 retail for a single and $10 for a 3-pack is pretty solid.
2) Variety of characters. Who the f- is Waverider? Even as a fairly hardcore comic guy, I didn't really know, but he was supposed to play a key role in some episodes (now it does not look like it). We will continue to try to deliver a large number of characters (heroes, villains, females, etc). However, we will not always get there over night - we are pretty locked for 2005...
Trust me, they don't look so great when that black plastic cord thing that connects the top to the bottom snaps. And not because you were playing it—because you left it in the case? Of course then you get three figures, upper body, mid-section and legs.Originally Posted by DisneyBoy
