Marvel going after "some very big licenses" for comics!

    Like This Thread!
This was recently announced at a recent press conference that Marvel held. Same press conference that Marvel said they were banning smoking with some characthers that we all know by now. (cough, bad idea!) Considering the success of G.I. Joe with Image, Marvel had this to say....

"With Image's success with G.I. Joe, Quesada said Marvel is looking into "some very big licenses" for comics.
"There was a point when we looked back on the G.I. Joe license, and it had already been swooped up by somebody who obviously is publishing it through Image," Quesada said. "I think it's great that G.I. Joe is in the top 25. It's a very cool thing.

"It also bodes well for some of the licenses that we are going after right now that we will hopefully have and be able to announce in the next couple of weeks."

I'm guessing that they are going after He-Man, Transformers, and maybe Thundercats. Though Thundercats never had a comic series it is a big name still. With Transformers revival in the form of RID and the new He-Man toy series coming this November, it makes sense that they would go after them. Plus there will be of course a new G.I. Joe line consisting of 80's characters revival coming in the Spring of 2002. GO MARVEL!!! I'm really hoping one of them is He-Man, yeah baby!

Why just 80s franchises? I know that many of you hold these shows fondly, and I have nothing against them, they are good, but not what I'd buy in comic book form. I'd wish they would expand a tad. I'd like to see them get back the Battlestar Galactica licence since nobody else has been able to really do that series justice. Realm just killed it.

I doubt they'll be doing TF, because I believe someone else owns the rights. There are two TPBs being released soon by some company, I'm not sure who, but they're collecting the last 12-16 issues, I'm not sure exactly. The last storyline. I hope they come out soon.

And I think there was a Thundercats comic series. At least, I've seen someone selling issues of Thundercats.

Your right, there was a Thundercats comic book series. It only lasted for like 13 issues or so and was published by Star Comics. I kind of want to see Marvel get Transformers and then I don't. Pat Lee's company, Dreamwave Productions was/is (don't know if they are now anymore) trying to get the license cause Pat Lee himself is a huge TF fan and wants very badly to draw a comic series.

Anyone remember the Wizard issue #111 from December that had today's hot artists takes on the 80's properties? Pat Lee did a beautiful two page spread for Transformers. Ed McGuinness did He-Man, Jim Cheung did Thundercats, Joe Madureira did Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and J. Scott Campbell did GI Joe, which he is doing the cover artwork now for Image's new GI Joe series hitting stands I believe next Wednesday. I'm proud to own this issue of Wizard. The artwork for all of these is pretty damn cool. Though I do have to question McGuinness' artwork on He-Man, he drew He-Man much too muscular and the chin looks just awful. Eh, whatta gonna do?

Actually, the Thundercats comic lasted more than 13 issues - I've got quite a few of them, including issues in the upper teens and lower 20s.

The Transformers collections are collecting the last few storylines of the comics because those issues are so hard to find, and when you do find them, they're incredibly expensive. I was able to pick up issues 1-55 fairly cheaply in backissue boxes and online, but its almost impossible to find good copies at reasonable prices of those higher numbered issues. The comic was losing interest in those later years, and not as many issues were printed. So, the final storylines are being reprinted so everyone that wants to read them, can. The first collected volume comes out in October or November I think.

And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.
    Spiral out. Keep going"
