MonkeyBrain Comics - Anyone Give 'Em a Try?

    Like This Thread!
So anyone here give a try to the new comics from MonkeyBrain? The first issues went live on comiXology yesterday and after reading the previews, I gave a shot to Edison Rex and Bandette.

Edison Rex feels a lot like a spin on concepts raised at the end of All-Star Superman -- specifically, the part when Lex Luthor tells Superman, "If not for you, I could have changed the world!" and Superman replies, "If you really wanted to change the world, you would have done it a long time ago." The final result turns out to have a fun little twist at the end to get Superman off-stage and make Edison Rex the nominal hero of the book. It feels to me like it'll be MegaMind done right, since I felt like that movie wasn't half as clever as it thought it was being.

Bandette was purchased almost purely on the power of Colleen Coover drawing. I run hot and cold on Paul Tobin's writing, and Bandette is fun but almost criminally slight. Not among my favorite of his works, to be honest (although the stuff I did like is Banana Sundays, a few issues of Marvel Adventures comics, and that's about it). There's a lot of energy and excitement on the page, along with some fun twists, but I don't know if I really love it.

I might try that Amelia Cole book, but something about it seems just overly familiar. It sure looks terrific, though.

99-cents per issue for now, and there's 7 pages of each launch book for free at the article I linked to above. I think it's worth rewarding the experiment, at least, especially at such a low personal cost. 3 comics for the price of 1 print book from the big 2? Yes, please. Don't honestly know how long I'll stick around, but I think I got my money's worth out of these.

I did. If Colleen Coover is there, I'm there. I have to actually read it first, though, so I'll do that and post more.
    And stay out of Riverdale!
