'Blacksad - A Silent Hell' coming to US in July!

    Like This Thread!

Hopefully you've heard of this French, anthropomorphic, noir, detective series? (Info Here) Well the fourth album which has yet to be released in America will be released via Dark Horse in July! This is huge news. Furry or no you have to appreciate the absurd attention to detail in the artwork or the intrigue of the story.

I'm so excited for this. I read a fan translation but that was garbage. I'm honestly thinking of buying the album twice just to support the series. Blacksad is the best.

Definitely not a furry - this comic is for everybody (who likes comics). Dark Horse's collection of the first three books was great, so I'm sure they'll do a good job here.

Yes the first hardcover is great and this one will be loaded with extras. Supposedly some concept artwork and two never before seen (in America) short stories. I hope this series never ends, it's so good.

    Short stories? Cool.

Dark Horse seemed a bit reticent to publish it like a European comic album (about 60 pages), so I knew they were adding a bunch of extras to swell the page count to around 100.

BTW, do you know anything about these short stories? I've got an idea about what A Silent Hell is about (mystery in New Orleans, voodoo stuff, ect.), but I haven't been able to find any info on the shorts.

    Really excited about this!

I'm afraid I don't know what the short stories are either. I know they'll be great though. If you check out the links on this French Twitter for Blacksad (https://twitter.com/#!/blacksadmania) there's a ton of great official and unofficial art. Just saying .

    Cool.

I can tell from the copyright page (viewable on amazon's preview of the book), that the two short stories are:

Comme Chien et Chat "As Dog and Cat"
Cracher au Ciel "Spitting in Heaven"

Hmm. I'm thinking As Dog and Cat may be a story about Blacksad and Smirnov?? Spitting in Heaven I have no idea about.

I've got mine coming in the mail next week. I saw it in the store today though. Looks high quality like the first collection. the Silent Hell story makes up the first half-ish of the book followed by what looked like 'making of' commentary for the series with a lot of water colors and in the works images. The two new stories looked really short lke one or two pages tops. Cool though, can't wait to get my mitts on it.

I came in to ask about this myself. The comic shop newsletters say it's in stores today, while Amazon (both US and Canada) say July 24th or 25th for release. Couldn't find a copy myself though when in the shop, curious to know if there's shipping delays.

In any case, I'm glad to know the book looks high quality.

Hrrm. I bought mine on Amazon and I guess I won't get it until the 27th or so. I guess I'm alright with that because I got it for super cheap. Can't wait to get a good look at it.

^Maybe, maybe not. Amazon got Fantagraphics' Uncle Scrooge: Only a Poor Old Man in stock a week before their release date.

    EDIT

...aaand amazon says it's in stock!

I finally got it and read it right away. Another great story like you'd expect. I really like the new characters in this one especially Thomas and Bill. IF anyone has read it can you explain to me what kind of character Thomas is. For some reason I can't figure out his motives and feelings. Is he truly jealous of Sebastian? Does he know about his father's past? Why does he say he'll never give Faust grandchildren. I love Thomas, just can't wrap my mind around him.

The short stories were very short, but just as sweet. Essentially themed monologues by Blacksad. Very pensive. The second one with Smirnov was extremely touching. I haven't read the behind the scenes part yet, but it seems to go over the creation process pretty well.

Overall I'd say my order of favorites goes like this -- 1. Arctic Nation 2. Silent Hell 3. Somewhere in the Shadows 4. Red Soul.

^Red Soul is my favorite! I love the '50s political stuff - the red scare, atomic bombs, counterculture figures, ect.

I'll get the new book soon. How short are the shorts? I mean, how many pages?

The shorts are only two or three pages long, but naturally tell good stories and the art is on par with the series proper. The Watercolor Stories (now that I've read it) is really just an explanation of the art process by Guarnido. Interesting stuff, but most of it was over-my-head art talk.

Red Soul I just didn't get. I need to read it again. Somehow it really fell flat for me the first time I read it.

^Well, I was already familiar with the time period and exactly what historical figures were being fictionalized (mainly through art and literature classes) .
