Free Comic Book Day 2010 Talkback (Possible Spoilers)

    Like This Thread!
What is today you may ask? Free Comic Book Day.

Once more we get free tales of Archie, Sonic The Hedgehog, the Marvel Universe, DC Comics. A new issue of Love & Capes is also upon us. Plus we have free stories of Toy Story, Shrek and The Tick. But don't take my word for it:

    So collect and share.

Well, my comic shop decided against their normal "3 titles per customer" and went with "1 copy of every title per customer." I got a nice little handful.

    -DC Kids Megasampler
    -Iron Man/Thor
    -War of the Supermen
    -Iron Man/Nova
    -Domo: The Manga
    -Mouse Guard/Fraggle Rock
    -Owly and Friends
    -Bongo Comics Free-For-All
    -Boom's Toy Story
    -Dynamite's Green Hornet Sampler
    -Love and Capes
    -Dark Horse/Clone Wars
    -Savage Dragon
    -Archie Summer Splash
    -Atomic Robo
    -Doctor Solar/Magnus
    -Sonic The Hedgehog
    -3rd World Studios Sampler
    -The Tick
    -Irredeemable/Incorruptible Flipbook
    -Yow! Drawn & Quarterly
    -Shrek
    -Fractured Fables
    -Overstreet Guide to Collecting Comics
    -G.I. Joe

Also, a War Machine Heroclix. Pretty nice haul if I do say so myself.

And people? The DC Kids Mega Sampler has Tiny Titans. That's right. Free Tiny Titans. If you, for any reason, saw that and passed it up, then shame on you. SHAME ON YOU, SIR!

I always thought that FCBD was the 5th of May every year. Needless to say, I am ticked that I missed it. Was planning on picking up the free Sonic issue.

The only FCBD comic I was interested in was Sonic the Hedgehog, but it wasn't worth spending ten bucks in gas for a free comic book.

Thankfully, the writer of the book usually has extra copies that he ships off to those interested on his message board, so I'll be ready to pounce on that deal.

Stick close to BumbleKing, Nel, so you don't miss your chance for an autographed copy.

It's kind of like ET, if you take out all of the emotion and turn it into a silly webcomic that's updated on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Actually got the FCBD Sonic issue a few days ago at the nearby Staples (they were giving away last years' FCBD titles as a promotion for the local comic book store, but the Sonic issue for this year slipped in by accident).

    Spoiler:
It's nothing too spectacular...it is a new story, but it's also basically a recap of the Iron Dominion arc. In a way, it also kind of set in the feeling that the status quo is exactly as it was before the big Sonic vs Eggman battle. Really, for a moment, I thought I was reading some untold story from back then, until flashbacks to the Iron Dominion arc showed up. Hell, even Snivley is working for Eggman again like nothing ever happened. Really makes the past year feel like a total waste of time, honestly.

Not so much annoyed by the recap (this was free after all), just about the last part.

It's always the first Saturday in May, regardless of what actual date it falls on.

It's kinda weird, but this is the first year that I can remember where they didn't have a comic-based movie open on the weekend of FCBD. Yeah, Iron Man 2 is next weekend, but I always remember having a comic-based movie be released the same weekend.

I am absolutely livid that I forgot that Free Comic Book Day was yesterday. There are quite a few different comics that I'd like to check out, so I am hoping that I wind up winning an eBay auction that has all of the comics included. Hopefully, I won't have to pay over $30.00, considering that the seller got them all for free.

Here's what I got for FCBD: Sonic the Hedgehog, Shrek/The Penguins of Madagascar, Toy Story, Iron Man Nova, Bongo Comics Free-For-All 2010, The Tick 1st issue reprint, War Machine Marvel HeroClix, and a Green Lantern and Billy Batson ring.
    These cartoons are awesome!

Don't feel bad that you missed Free Comic Book Day! I knew about this day months ago, but I ended up working on a Saturday, so I missed it completely. By the time I got home the comic book store in my area closed. There is always next year, though. I hope I did not miss any good books I'm sure most of the free comics were re-prints of the original stories...
A few years ago Free Comic Book Day was in July, so it's not always in May

Yeah, the third one back in 2004. It was so it could tie in with Spider-Man 2. But it's the only one that's ever not been on the first weekend of May. But FCBD's official website lists it as "the first Saturday in May each year."

I had a great FCBD 2010! I picked up War of the Superman, Iron Man/Thor, Bongo 2010 and Atomic Robo for myself and a pile of comics for my nieces and nephews including DC Kids Megasampler, Iron Man/Nova, Fraggle Rock, Archie Summer Spectacular, Shrek and Toy Story. Plus I picked up a couple Spider-Man trades and placed an order for some other books. A really great FCBD. My store was packed so early in the day. I was there at 10:30am and it was full!

    Comics I obtained on FCBD:

    - Archie's Summer Splash
    - Toy Story
    - Solar/Magnus Robot Fighter
    - The Invincible Iron Man
    - Love and Capes

Got five comics since I was wearing a comic-related t-shirt (normal limit otherwise was two).

    Also bought:
    - Tiny Titans
    - Showcase PResents: DC Comics Presents' Superman Team-ups, vol. 1 (20% off all TPBs that day)

    The shop seemed busy...

My shop had a 5 limit, though I hit another on the way home and got a few more. I got:

    - GI Joe: A Real American Hero #155 1/2
My favorite action series being continued?! Yes, please! I'll write more about this in the GI Joe thread, but I was very happy even though the issue wasn't set in the year 1994. Ah, well. Can't have everything.

    - War of the Supermen #0

My buddy recommended this to me. I've not read any of the stuff leading up to it, but it looks like it could be cool. Not sure if I'm ready to jump back into DC again, though.

    - Toy Story

    - The Sixth Gun

Western horror comic presented by Oni Press, the publisher of my current favorite series, "Stumptown." Could be promising, or could just be another tired zombie comic. Time will tell.

    - Iron Man and Thor

    .... I forgot the others. ^_^

I also bought the first issue of the new Flash series and got a free Flash ring (which goes very well with my Blackest Night GL ring).

On the way to the comic shop, I picked up a Mighty Morphin black ranger, the Mega-Winger (Power Rangers in Space) and a Transmetal Beast Wars Megatron at a flea market.

All together, I had an awesome free comic book day!

    - Bongo Comics Free-For-All (Free Simpsons stories make for a good laugh)
    - Toy Story (Enjoyed the movies, so I went for this)
    - Love and Capes (If I have to explain this one, then I've failed as a comic fan.)
    - Sonic The Hedgehog
    - The Tick (Much like the TMNT comics, I don't have money to spare for a trade, so having a freebie was helpful)
    - Yow! Drawn & Quarterly
    - Shrek

Most of the titles I picked up I don't go for regularly (aside from Sonic and L&C), but it gives me the opportunity to diversify my collection just the same.

It was OK. I got most of the "main" free titles but a few slipped through my grasp, like Tick and Love and Capes. I was also disappointed that my area didn't have any gonzo sales. No 40% or 50% off things or anything like that.
