This Month in Comics: June 2009

    Like This Thread!
Welcome to This Month in Comics for June 2009!

This is the place to discuss the comics you've bought this week, whether it be a brand new title or old back-issues. We also welcome and encourage talk about comics in general - news you've read on comic news sites, the state of the industry in general, upcoming issues you're excited about, etc. All we ask is that you please use spoiler brackets in the event that your comments get too detailed concerning a particular storyline. This way the book won't be ruined for anyone who hasn't read it yet.

It's New Comic Book Day for the week of June 3, 2009 - June 9, 2009!

For a list of the new items shipping this week, please consult Diamond Comics' Shipping List.

To find a comic book store near you, check out the Comic Shop Locator Service.

The Legend Of Zelda Mangas: I'll admit that I'm not a big Zelda fan, I've enjoyed several of the games (Zelda 2: Adventures Of Link, Link To The Past and Link's Awakening) as well as the Nintendo Power 12 Part Comic, the Zelda stories published by Valiant and I'll admit the original cartoon was a guilty pleasure. Hence why I'm getting the manga.

That said, I had to put my copy on hold to afford some later purchases this month, because I recently Sonic The Hedgehog Archives Volume 10.
Deadpool on the "genius" of Hollywood: Everything's turned into a movie these days. -- Old TV shows, board games, candy bars. And let me tell ya, I'm totally stoked for Butterfinger The Movie.

I've got the two "Ocarina of Time" ones, as well as the "Majora's Mask" one, and they're both very good for a licensed manga. I still need to get the other two (now three, I guess) ones, though.

As for my picks? "World of New Krypton" is a gimmie. The only Superman title I read right now. As for "Run"? I was skeptical of the Aftermath series after how let down I was of Final Crisis (and after "Dance" and "Escape," they were justified. "Ink" wasn't too bad, though), but "Run" was just awesome. It's just pure, punch-you-in-the-face action fun with a good amount of humor thrown in. Hopefully the entire mini can keep that going.

So I'm not the only one who remembers that comic? That was so awesome, (along with the Super Mario comic), and made me look forward to my latest issue of Nintendo Power each month...and I still have those issues of Nintendo Power somewhere in my closet...I stopped collecting that magazine not long after, I believe, (around '94 or '95, when the Super Nintendo stopped making cool video games)...

Sorry, off topic, but those were some fun times....if they would collect those old Nintendo Power comics, I'd buy those in TPB's...

I'll pretty much be buying what I do every month the Archie Sonic Comics & of course the good Dark Reign Tie-ins as well as my monthly dose of Deadpool, Ghost Rider, & Runaways. Manga Wise, well whatever Tickles my fancy.

(on a side note am I the only one that finds the saying "tickles my fancy" somewhat odd. Man I need to stop overthinking things...

Another victim of early-'90s Nintendo Power here, too! When I first subscribed to the magazine, it was purely for the "Super Mario World" and "Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" comics... I was pretty bummed when they ended and the succeeding Star Fox and Wario comics were less fun [and the latter one was way too short as well]

I felt kind of weird picking two Batman titles for my picks, but to be honest, these were the only two Batman titles that I was actually excited about post-Battle For The Cowl.

For "Batman"? I seem to be the only person out there that liked Judd Winick's run on Batman. I thought "Under The Hood" was awesome, so I look forward to his new run on the title. Throwing in Mark Bagley just added icing to the cake.

And "Red Robin"? I was an avid subscriber to "Robin," and the current rumor (not sure, since I've yet to read #1) of Tim being Red Robin makes it a must for me. I also like the solicits for it, about Red Robin searching for Bruce. Seems like it'll be a pretty important title in the Bat-Family.

I'd like to hear if you enjoy the first issue of "Red Robin" or not I debated picking it up or not, but haven't really decided yet. It sounds interesting enough though!

As for my AMZ pick, well... I've discussed my opinions on the first two issues of the "American Son" story arc over in its Talkback Thread. I'll just say that it's shaping up to be another "New Ways to Die" / "Character Assassination", which were both great multi-part stories. And immediately following this story will be issue #600, so it's a safe bet to say that this story will be setting up the events in that issue..

I put my full review in the Red Robin Talkback Thread, but long story short, Tim punching out Damian made it worth the $2.99 alone.

I too enjoyed Judd Winick's run on "Under the Hood". Even though they brought back Jason which I didn't like, I thought the story was at least interesting.

Lately though I've been picking up the Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps. Buffy season eight is definitely a must these days, and I've also been enjoying Dynamite comic's Zorro.

Dynamite puts out some great stuff. "Lone Ranger" is an absolutely amazing comic. The delays kill it, though. It's like "Ultimates" level bad. But it's always on the top of my comic stack the month it comes out.

Borders had some decent coupons for their rewards card members these past two weeks (30%-40% off), so I went a little Trade-happy lately.

    Picked up:
    -Hitman: A Rage In Arkham
    -Ex Machina vol. 5: Smoke
-Green Lantern: The Sinestro Corps. War vol. 2
-New X-Men Ultimate Collection vol. 3

Still can't find The Question one that was my pick two weeks ago, so that may not be "in" enough to make it to book stores, and may have to just grab it at my comic shop. Not that I mind, as I like giving my comic shop business, but Borders give's better discounts.

Yes, Lone Ranger is also a good one. Although I've just been picking up the trades instead of the monthlies. Are you familiar with any of the Alex Ross stuff Dynamites been cranking out and is it any good?
