This Month in Comics: April 2009

    Like This Thread!
Welcome to This Month in Comics for April 2009!

This is the place to discuss the comics you've bought this week, whether it be a brand new title or old back-issues. We also welcome and encourage talk about comics in general - news you've read on comic news sites, the state of the industry in general, upcoming issues you're excited about, etc. All we ask is that you please use spoiler brackets in the event that your comments get too detailed concerning a particular storyline. This way the book won't be ruined for anyone who hasn't read it yet.

    It's New Comic Book Day for the week of April 1, 2009 - April 7, 2009 !

For a list of the new items shipping this week, please consult Diamond Comics' Shipping List.

OK, fun's fun, but we're back to what passes for normal around here, more or less . In case anybody was wondering, our April Fool's Day gag tied in to the general "1999" theme because the graphic novel for 300 was apparently first published in December 1999.

As for my pick this week, it's mostly out of nostalgia for the original Assistant Editor's Month. I'm not even sure I pre-ordered the comics, but if I didn't, I'll have to remember to grab them the next time I'm in the shop.

I went to a local comic show today and grabbed Green Lantern #92 and 117. With those, I officially have the entire Kyle Rayner run on GL. I may go back and grab the previous 49 issues with Hal if I can get a decent deal, but I'm glad I can finally mark that off my list of runs to get.

Now I just need to finish off Robin with two extremely hard issues to find.

re: Pick of the Week. I've heard lots of good things about Green Arrow Year One, and I really liked Andy Diggle's take on Adam Strange in Planet Heist. So I'm willing to take a chance, even though I've never really warmed up all that much to Green Arrow as a lead in his own comic book.

    Elsewhere on the Internet...

The good news about Colleen Coover having a weblog is that we can get her artwork more frequently without having to wait for new comics. Like this one with a pretty girl in a swamp running away from a monster or this pic of Tigra. The bad news is that now I want to see Coover do a full comic of Swamp Thing or Man-Thing or whatever-other-weird-creature-monster in a swamp with a pretty girl running away from it.

Jill Thompson posts art from the upcoming Beasts of Burden ongoing comic that she does with Evan Dorkin about a pack of dogs (and one cat) who solve paranormal mysteries. Easily the best bits of the Dark Horse Book of Monsters HCs before, and something I'm looking forward to a whole lot. With luck, they'll reprint those in the inevitable trade, so I can have them 1) full size (I hope I hope I hope), 2) all in one place, and 3) together with the new series.

I got the Ultimate Spider-Man trades vols. 19-21 for Easter, which gets me up-to-date (I think) with what's been collected so far.

Just finished "Death of a Goblin," and was very shocked at the ending. It's been tough keeping away from spoilers of the title, but man has it been worth it. Love this title.

On my two picks for this week:

For those unaware, after the conclusion of the Amazing Spider-Girl book at issue #30, May's adventures have been moved to the Amazing Spider-Man Family book. There she will feature in stories of around 16 pages, though for this week's issue I believe she receives a full-length story in the book. Her stories will be titled as Spectacular Spider-Girl from here on in.
I've never read the book before [save for one issue under it's previous title: "Spider-Man Family", which featured a story with "Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends"], but I believe it also has a monthly in-continuity [but mostly unimportant] story for Spider-Man and another - wacky - story. This month it has the "Amazing Spider-Ma'am" [Aunt May, IIRC]... so if that's your kind of thing, add Spider-Girl into the mix and you should really consider picking this up! As for me, I'm solely interested in this because of the inclusion of Spider-Girl; so I'll be picking up at least the first few issues starting with this one.

Thunderbolts completes a four-part cross-over with the Deadpool book with this week's issue. The two parts which took place over in the latter title were loads of fun, as you'd come expect from the book if you've been reading it before this story! The issue in "Thunderbolts" was a bit of a let-down though, as the writing wasn't exactly up to par with the parts in "Deadpool" and even though the humour is dark, it doesn't necessarily make it fit in a book that's dark overall. The art being adjusted to resemble the cartoony look of "Deadpool" doesn't make it much better - I hope that change doesn't last past the end of this story arc...
