Sam & Max: Surfing The Highway Talkback (Spoilers)

Sam & Max: Surfing the Highway

    Created by Steve Purcell

    The Story:
Sam, a trenchcoat-clad hound, and Max, described as a "small rabbity thing," the anthropomorphic heroes of the cult comic book collected in this volume, are a far cry from the benignly humorous critters of traditional funny animal comics. Their outlandish cases take them from ancient Egypt (where they confront pyramid-building aliens) and the moon (which they rid of giant cockroaches) to the local supermarket (where they encounter an ectoplasmic manifestation from the spirit world). But their nearly plotless adventures are basically just setups for letting the trigger-happy pair commit senseless but hilarious havoc that both parodies the violence pervading contemporary pop culture and updates and escalates the entertaining catharsis of classic animated cartoon mayhem. Purcell adds to the hilarity by working in hundreds of background gags that evoke the heyday of Mad comics. Sam and Max are probably less known in their comics incarnation than as stars of a popular video game. This collection gives their video audience opportunity to check out their original appearance in comics.

Well personally I finished the book yesturday. To me it's my perfect kind of comic, I don't generally get chance to get many comics and usually when I do get one I'm completely lost on where to start because of all the stories and continuty (sp?) but this allowed to you slot in anywhere and about to enjoy the book still to it's fullest. I actually didn't know Sam and Max was originally a comic until last year when I found out about the 'Season 1' game. I had grown up with the 'Hit The Road' game and later found the cartoon series appealing. So when I had found out Sam and Max was actually a year older than me I was surprised! I was happy though that there was comics because I was drawn to their sadistic (would that be the correct term?) humour.

I also love the artwork. I've gotten into comics through my love for animation like B:tAS and S: tAS and so I have always prefered the 'toony' drawnings. I do like normal graphic novel style, it's just my passion comes from cartoons. I also prefer my darkness to be touched with comedy, makes it more enjoyable for me. So the reason that the artwork is softer than normal graphic drwans enhanced the appeal and homour in my eyes. I was laughing out loud with this title, and I think now I want a psychotic white bunny.

I have the new TPB of this coming soon from DCBS. Sadly, I can't find my original copy of it, since it got buried somewhere in the mountains of books we still haven't unpacked yet.

Still, between the new games, the new TPB, and the upcoming DVD set of the cartoon series (keep an eye out for the Toon Zone News review), it's a good time to be a Sam and Max fan. I may weep openly.
