Don't call them X-Babies Anymore!

THE NEW MUTANTS #18-21 "The Demon Bear Saga"

Written by Chris Claremont
Art and Cover by Bill Sienkiewicz

The Story:
Danielle Moonstar has a dark problem. An evil spirit called the Demon Bear is coming for her. Ever the proud Cheyenne, Danielle has to face this threat once and for all. She must do it alone. Bad idea! Dani will need her teammates in order to survive! And once that trouble is passed, the team will have to deal with an even stranger creature: an alien named Warlock!

“Don’t call them X-Babies anymore! See what's New with The New Mutants!” Such was the advertisement for Bill Sienkiewicz’s entry to the series. Chris Claremont’s association with this artist has often been underrated compared to Cockrum, Byrne, Smith, Romita Jr. Nevertheless, Sienkiwicz’s unique artwork- combining surrealism and realism (sort of a Steve Ditko-Neal Adams mixture)- brought an impressive impact to Claremont’s X-spinoff. Especially outstanding is the dark depiction of the Demon Bear, with its warped shape and horrible face expressions (yikes!). And although issue 21 is something of a solo story, it works as an epilogue to the events. Important milestones from this storyline include Rachel Summers’ first appearance in the mainstream universe (powerfully introduced by her memories of Professor Xavier getting shot!), Illyana’s eldritch armour, and Warlock and Doug Ramsey joining the team (say all you want about him, I love Doug!).
