"X" Marks The Spot (X-Men Comic Memories)?

    Like This Thread!
With the arrival of X-Men 3: The Last Stand to regular edition DVD today (discuss the movie here and the DVD here), are there any comic X-Men memories you’d like to share? Have a favorite character, a favorite moment, favorite writer/artist, etc, from the different incarnations of the X-Men? Remember, this can be from any X-Men series, be it a spin-off title, cancelled title, new or old, etc. Any X-Men title can be referenced from any era. One of my favorite moments should be obvious from the cover art below!

I know this subject has been done before, but let’s make this an X-cellent day to remember!

    (I know, a horrible pun!)

Uh, Jum Harvey, I think your cover art was deleted.

The biggest things I remember was the launch of Generation X and the stuff that led up to it. It was a big deal to me because it was the first time an X-team book was launching while I was reading. I read that first part of "Phalanx Covenant" that ran through the core books and thought it was awesome (I didn't read the rest of Phalanx Covenant, though). Also, I remember the stuff leading up to it that had to do with Jubilee and how she was dealing with all the stuff the X-Men were going through. It made her a favorite character of mine.

The funny thing is that I didn't actually read Generation X until years later. I didn't have access to a comic shop at the time and I was getting Uncanny in the mail. It actually took a bit of effort to track down the parts of the crossover that were in "Adjectiveless" X-Men.
Saturday Morning is not just part of the week. It's a state of mind.

I can see it. It's the cover to the most recent issue of ASTONISHING X-MEN.

I blame the X-Men for making me into a serious comic book fan. Some of my favorite memories, in no real order:

    - Uncanny X-Men #175. This was the comic that did it. I picked it up in Shop-Rite while Mom was shopping. Didn't know who anybody was or what they were doing, and it was the culminating issue of a story that had been running for at least ten issues. And I didn't care. Because it was so damn cool that I had to get more of it, so I did. UXM #166 - 212 formed the core of what turned into my comic collecting hobby. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, you "Continuity keeps new readers from buying comics" people!

    - Wolverine #1-4. I'm talking about the original Chris Claremont/Frank Miller mini-series, before piles of ninjas and comics starring Wolverine were a running joke. Even today, it still holds up well. It's the best there is at what it does, but what it does isn't very nice.

    - Kitty Pryde and Wolverine #1-6. More Wolverine, more ninjas, and Kitty Pryde (who I had SUCH a crush on when I was a hormonal teenager). The only thing it was missing was Frank Miller, which I noticed at the time but not enough to pay attention to the actual penciller.

    - UXM #205. "Wounded Wolf," by Claremont and Barry Windsor-Smith. Dave of Dave's Long Box is funnier and better at explaining why this issue rocks so hard.

    - UXM #181. "Young Dragons in Love." Lockheed the Dragon's lady love dragon gets really big and tries to demolish Tokyo while the X-Men try to stop her. Really, sometimes it's the simple pleasures that are best.

    - UXM #183. Colossus vs. Juggernaut in a barroom brawl. In context, this was a big deal, since it was a step in the Kitty/Peter breakup that had been going on for a lot of issues. And Claremont managed to do it AND include a bit where Juggy brings a whole building down on Colossus.

I like the cover that Jim posted. That is one of my favorite current X-Men moments. The fight between Colossus and Juggernaut was one of my favorite comics as a kid and I would love to find a reprint of that comic!

One of the X-Men moments that made my jaw drop was when Magneto ripped out the adamantium from Wolverine. I was surprised Marvel let that go ahead.

I agree with Ace on the original Wolverine mini-series. I think he's really lost the edge he had then with the X-Men comics today. Joss Whedon is doing his best to get it back though.

    Nice to be back posting!

I can remember my first Spider-Man comic perfectly (Web of Spider-Man #49) but I have a hard time remembering my first X-Men comic. I know it was Uncanny X-Men and it had a huge image of Mr. Sinister on the cover but aside from that I can't even think of what it was. I might be wrong but it also might be a tie-in to the "Inferno" crossover that Marvel did in the 1980's. Can anyone help me with this?

As for memories of the X-Men I remember I got into the comics around the early 1990s but I wasn't a regular reader until Jean Grey and Cyclops got married in X-Men #30. After that they had me hooked for a few years before the titles became and editorial mess. I think "Age of Apocalypse" is one of my favorite memories as it was one of the first big crossovers that I read. It was that and The second "Clone Saga" in the Spider-Man comics.
