RIP John Buscema

Artist John Buscema, best known for decades worth of work for Marvel Comics, died Thursday, January 10 of stomach cancer. He was 84.

Buscema began his comics career at Timely Comics (later Marvel) in 1948 and worked in the industry on a number of titles until going into semi-retirement in 1996. DC Comics published his most recent work, "Just Imagine Stan Lee with John Buscema Creating Superman" in September, and Buscema reportedly had finished penciling another project for the company a few weeks before his death. He had been diagnosed with stomach cancer in the fall of 2001.

Buscema's career spanned everything from western comics to superheroes to gritty action stories, everything from the classic iconic characters to quirky books like the surreal (although critically well-received) 1994 "Archie versus the Punisher" special.

Another legend passes away...


If you guys wanted an example of fundamental drawing technique, John Buscema was and IS still the best guy to turn to when it comes down to it. I loved his 60s-70s Avengers run, and his Conan work kept the character going for years with his consistent excellence.
