JLA vs. Avengers: Is it matched up, right?

I was looking at one of the various JLA vs. The Avengers posters, and I realized how much I hated most of the match ups..

While Green Arrow vs. Hawkeye, and Flash vs. Quicksilver are basically giveaway's, it's others such as SuperMan vs. Thor, and Batman vs. Captain America, that bother me.

My question is, do they realy match up that well?
And, what are your perfect match-ups?

The problem is that, when all is said and done, they're pretty much the same character...just from a different comic book universe. For example, you could take just about any character from the Justice League (or DC Comics, for that matter) and find the rough Marvel equivalent (discounting the obvious...Squadron Supreme). For example:

Superman = Thor, Gladiator
Batman = Captain America
Wonder Woman = She-Hulk, Warbird
Green Lantern = Nova (Richard Ryder)
Flash = Quicksilver
J'onn J'onzz = Vision
Hawkgirl = Angel/Archangel

They're very similar in power and impact on their respective comic book line, so it all boils down to a popularity contest over who would beat who. For example, I think that Batman would have a good chance of beating Captain America, but since they're both examples of the "ultimate human fighter" archetype from their respective publishers it could go either way.

It might help the thread if there was a picture of the poster here, but I don't know where to get one.

I think that most of them match up pretty well, at least as well as could be expected. Gladiator vs. Superman would probably be the ideal match-up, but Thor is much more popular than Supes. I think that they had Green Lantern teamed up against Iron Man, but I think that Quasar would be a better match for GL.

I'm not really expecting this to answer the questions like who would win in a fight, Batman or Capt. America. I'm just expecting it to be a story that will consist of a bunch of little fights. And if, for example, Cap did beat Batman, I wouldn't take that to mean that Cap is superior to Batman and would always beat him, just that Cap won that one fight. When it comes out, I'm not going to look at it as a comic that shows who's better than who, I'm going to look at it and read it because it will (hopefully) be a good story.

I put Green Lantern against Nova because, for all intents and purposes, Nova is a Green Lantern rip-off (he's one of a team of intergalactic Nova warriors).

The problem is that the JLA is DC's best, while the Avengers don't represent the whole of the Marvel U. A true Marvel All-Star team would have Spidey, the Hulk, various mutants, etc.

Thor vs. Superman - Hey, Thor's a god, and Clark ain't. I think this would be a hell of a fight. Superman is vunerable to magic, right? Would Thor's lightning be considered magic?

Cap. America vs. Batman - Again a great fight. Is it strickly hand-to-hand, or do they have their shield and utility belt? I remember one Batman writer once saying that in this fight "Batman would always win, because Batman cheats." LOL!

Iron Man vs. Green Latern - I love the George Perez poster everyone is refering to, but this match-up seems unfair. Everyone complains that Superman is too powerful, BIMO, Green Latern is the one that seems too god-like. Couldn't he just take apart Iron Man's armor with a thought? Don't know much about Quasar. Maybe he could take him.

In the end, I've seen these vs. threads go on forever. A writer could make anybody beat anybody depending on how he writed it. I wouldn't want to be the guy writing JLA/Avengers. (Busiek?) Talk about pressure!

As I remember Perez and Buisek already said that this crossover would be much more than a who can beat who grudge match. So while I'm sure there will be some fights between them at first, I think they will be focusing more on these great characters working together and how their different philosophies will mesh.

I couldn't agree more. The Avengers, heroes and villians, don't represent the all-stars of the Marvel Universe to me. Because of that, the avengers have never really appealed to me, at least nowhere near how I like the JLA. And the messed up part is that I greatly prefer Marvel over DC.

The only "All-Stars" not entrenched in the Avengers mythos is Spidey, the FF and the X-men (many of whose "all star" staus is debatable given their johnny-come-lately status a tops-sellers). Interestingly, most people don't seem to consider the Hulk a "real" Avenger even though it was his inclusion as a founding member that allowed the Avengers to re-define the Super-team concept. "What do you mean he quit after issue #2?" "He's a villain in issue #3??!!"

Heck, thanks to modern tales, now even Spidey and 3/4 of the FF have been on the team. Knowing Perez, they'll all get a cameo appearance at least.
