    JLA #61 talkback

    Like This Thread!
That was AWESOME! Man, this new team rules! The team interaction hasn't been this good since the Morrison era, and is in many ways better. Man, I wish I had the issue in front of me to give some quotes! Really, if you haven't picked this up yet, you really should. It's some of Joe Kelly's best stuff (nothing tops ACTION #775), and is an all-around great read.

Oh, a Doug Mahnke's art is great, but ya either love him or hate him.

    Thoughts?

I thought the "Batman's touching me! I'm dieing" line (or something like that) was a highlight for the issue. I think Joe Kelly taking over the title was a smart move for DC. While the art is sort of iffy for me, I'm sure I'll grow accustomed to it. His art was mediocre on Superman: MOS, but his art has improved here.

    Quotes! Yay!

Lois: Insane. Some people need a hobby.
    Clark: Hmmm...like lucious lip inspector?
Lois: Smooth segue Smallville. You read that off a T-shirt?
Clark: Better than "I'm with stupid."

Green Lantern: Sweet. We gave the mother of all tsunamis a flat tire.

Green Lantern: Irnonic, isn't it? We finally get stuck with a world-class plumbing problem, and Aquaman isn't here for it.

Green Lantern: So good...soooo good. You would think "replace the Verrazano Bridge brick by brick" might be a tough command. But not for you! Noo...who's your daddy?

Batman (after his JLA signal goes off): Beeper of the gods. No offense.
Wonder Woman: None taken...oh, "fragile mortal."

Superman: Diana said it was operating on the "end of the world is nigh" system.
Batman: Mm. Wonder Woman could tell me if Cerebus prefers venison and cheese for dinner, but I wouldn't believe her unless I saw it with my own eyes.

Batman: Those of you with enhanced eyesight might notice that the aquatic life below us seems to be following the same pattern.
    Green Lantern: How did you--?
Batman: They're called eyes, Lantern. Try using them. The Flash is coming.
Green Lantern: "They're called eyes..." What is this, dump on Kyle day?
Wonder Woman: They are. And you should.

Flash: ...You're touching me. Batman is touching me. I'm going to die, aren't I?
Batman: Not if you pay close attention.

Batman (to Flash, as Flash is sitting on a missle): Flash, there's a zone of space out of synch with our current location in spacetime. THat's a magnetic pulse missle. Synched to the vibrations of the "Blank Zone" it should disrupt whatever machinery is generating it, and "catch it up" to our speed.
Flash: I think I left the iron on. I'll be back in a--
Superman: Just do what you do, Flash. You'll be okay.
Flash: So easy for you to say...you don't have a Bat-missle strapped to your--AHHHHHH!

Superman: There are times I hate it when he [Batman] is right.
    Flash: Like, every time?

    Batman: --Abra Kadabra.
Green Lantern: Gonna reach out and grab ya?

Green Lantern: How do you know this?
Batman: The same way I know he has no reason to use a phase shift to hide his actions--I know everything.
    Green Lantern: Right.

Sign on the door of Eel O'Brian's office: O'BRIAN SECURITY...FUGEDDABOUT IT!

    Tiny little alien: SKRIEEE!
Plastic Man: "Skriee" me?!?! No one "skriee's" me and live to get away with it!!
    WHOMP!

What a great issue. As for the art, like I said, ya either love him or hate him. I personally love the art style, but I know it takes some getting used to 'cause I used to hate it. But I think a big reason he was selected is the fact that the guy can draw anything. And do it with and incredible eye for detail.

Okay, I'm sold! I'll go check it out. I've loved Doug Mahnke's art ever since the highly-underrated Lobo/Mask miniseries.

How long has Joe Kelly and Doug Mahnke been the creative team?

This was their very first issue, so you're just in time and won't miss a thing!

This was great after that HORRIBLE Christmas issue...Joe Kelley is a genuis! It still didn't top Action 775, but it's still great. Has Kelley worked on anything before Action?

Oh God, that was funny! Joe Kelly's dialogue is priceless--it's like a step up from Grant Morrison's in humor and casualness.

This was too good! I'm definately collecting this series again.

Kelly worked on the early issues of Deadpool and had a short stint on X-MEN. He also wrote DC's Superboy for a while as well. He's been writing Action for awhile now and doing a darn good job. His bets isue is by far ACTION #775. But his JLA issue shows that he is gonna do some great things with that title....
