DC Comics in May: What's in YOUR wallet?

    Like This Thread!
I dunno...a coupla bucks and a bus pass.

    THAT SAID...

The solits may no longer be posted here at the Zone of Toons, but that hardly means we can't discuss them here! Right?...

    ...

    Right?

I got my info from the Site That Shall Not Be Named, but the info's gotta be all over. I just like it there 'cause they got cover images. Pretty.

BATMAN BEGINS MOVIE ADAPTION - It had to be done! You knew it was coming! And Scott Beatty is the go-to guy for this kinda stuff. He'll probably do a fine job with it, even though all comic book movie adaptations, by nature, completely suck. And Kilian Plunkett on art? Isn't that the guy who did BATGIRL?

YEAR ONE: BATMAN/SCARECROW - Another obvious release, and one that I'd usually ignore. But BRUCE JONES is writing it!

BATMAN VILLAINS SECRET FILES 2005 - Anyone else have the original one of this? I think it came out like way back in '98. It was pretty sweet. This'll probably be waaayyyy better though. Mignola doing some of the art, too...you know you like that.

BATMAN: DARK DETECTIVE - I know a lotta people are looking forward to this. I am not among them.

ACTION COMICS #827 - And Gail Simone takes over! I will never forgive myself for not buying this, but I do what I must to survive.

ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #640 - I've never read MAJESTIC, but this Karl Kerschl guy does some pretty impressive work. Love the Matthew Clark, but this should be a fine replacement.

GREEN LANTERN #1 - Here it is! Hal is officially BACK. I'm really trying to hold back the cash from the comics, but damn...how can you NOT want this? (waits for inevitable explanation)

SEVEN SOLDIERS stuff - Yes for all of it. Every month I'm coming back with something to give props to this project, so here's me saying that. Love that Cameron Stewart cover, but what else is new?

VILLAINS UNITED #1 - Looks like the most interesting spin-off of COUNTDOWN yet.

WRATH OF THE SPECTRE TP - Nothing like a TP with that title when your accompanying cover art is from FUN COMICS.

WHEN THE HECK IS THE NEXT 100 BULLETS TRADE COMING? I'm DYING here! DYING!

BATMAN MARIONETTE - I think the fates have it in for me to never be rich, because all the money would be put on stuff like this.

PARASITE ACTION FIGURE - As much as I think Alex Ross is extraordinarily overrated, he does fantastic work on villains, and his Parasite was always one of my faves.

BATMAN BEGINS MERCHANDISE - I can't wait to see some of this stuff, knowing full well I could never afford it. But if that 13" action figure is as sweet as it sounds (and for as much as it cost...yikes), it'll be tough.

    Howdy,

Until TZ gets the solicitations up, you can go gawk at Comic Book Resources' solicitations rather than go someplace...unmentionable.

Off the top of my head: part 2 of J. Torres' Legends of the Dark Knight; Batman: Dark Detective ("Vote for Me or I'll Kill You."); more Gotham Central trades; a Humanoids Publishing TPB by...Geoff Johns???; and Top 10 The 49'ers (it ain't more Toybox, Smax, Woronov, and Joe Pi, but it'll do).

whats in your wallet is a good way to describe dc comics for may. my response for marvel is, i have nothing in my wallet because i spent all my money on dc comics.

BATMAN BEGINS MOVIE ADAPTATION - stays un read until after i see batman begins on opening day. then i'll put my ticket stub in the bag along with the comic. i wish dennis o'neil was writing this though. he has written every batman movie comic adaptation and it would be nice if the "tradition" was continued.
BATMAN #640 - i know i'll be getting batman for some time now.
BATMAN: DARK DETECTIVE #1 & 2 - "vote for me! or i'll kill you!" i hope theres more of this dark humor in dark detective. i need to get the strange apparitions trade really really bad.....
BATMAN: STRANGE APPARITIONS TP - hopefully i'll get this before may. dc could have made a new edition of this trade though.
ROBIN #138 - continuing my subscription...

ACTION COMICS #827 - i knew i was subscribing to this when it was announced john byrne was doing the art. i have high expectations for action comics though, i know it will be way better than chuck austens run (i dont hate mr. austen's guts, i just didnt like those spider-man wise cracks).
ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #640 - eagerly awaiting to see more work by karl kershl.
SUPERMAN #217 - lets hope the new team can bring back faith in this title.
SUPERMAN/BATMAN #21 - i dont know. from what is told, this arc doesnt look as promising as loeb and mcguinness' first arc. but they havent really told us much anyway, so i guess i'll have to wait.

general superman comments - this may begins superman's year. i can feel it. its going to be about a year before the movie comes out and this is dc's way of gearing us up. i can't wait to be getting every superman title.

GREEN LANTERN #1 - of course i'm getting this....
JLA #114 - this arc finnally ends. i am loving this arc and i hope it concludes nicely. i dont intend to get jla after busiek is done. it all depends who is doing the book, but i can live with one jla title (classified).
TEEN TITANS #24 - matthew clark was the last person i was expecting to see do teen titans since mckone and grummett signed the exclusive marvel contract. i was hoping for ivan reis to be doing the teen titans work. we'll see though. the solicit says clark is only a "guest" artist.
OUTSIDERS #24 - teen titans crossover...
    WONDER WOMAN #216 & 217 - rags morales art...
TEEN TITANS GO! #19 - i will continue to get this untill this series is canceled.
MAJESTIC #5 - i am subscribing to majestic when i get to my comic shop this week. i got all four issues off of ebay and read them this week end. i loved the mini series and i currently have issues 1 and 2 in my reserve box. i snagged the last issue 1 off the shelf too. glad i wont miss out. i hope barry allen is glad to see some one else reading majestic.

    countdown tie ins:
DAY OF VENGEANCE #2 - one of the minis i'm not really looking forward to. its a tie in though, so you pretty much have to get it.
THE OMAC PROJECT #2 - i think i am looking forward to this the most. mainly because it looks like the focus of this mini is on batman.
THE RANN/THANAGAR WAR #1 - i guess this is why ivan reis isnt working on teen titans. i'm not really looking forward to this also. i just dont like hawkman. i would smack him over the head if i met him. why cant he be the victim in countdown????
VILLAINS UNITED #1 - looking forward to this..

marvel, good luck trying to get me to buy 22 comics or more from you in may. or any upcoming months.
ADAM WEST BATMAN ACTION FIGURES! ADAM WEST BATMAN COMIC BOOKS!
(The most excited I've been for ANYTHING Batman related for some time now)

BRING ROUTH BACK - THE CAMPAIGN TO KEEP BRANDON ROUTH AS SUPERMAN
    - dead. henry cavill is superman. BUT i'll be meeting mr routh at wizard world philly this year. so, THERE!!!!

Well, the thing that really sticks out for me is the The World's Greatest Superheroes slipcased hardcover, which collects all of the Paul Dini/Alex Ross tabloids. I mean... yowza. I only own one of these (JLA: Liberty and Justice), so this is an easy buy for me. Considering the page count, at $50, it's a pretty good deal, and the stories definitely merit the hardcover treatment. I expect this will look mighty fine on the bookshelf.

I too am looking forward to Dark Detective. It looks like a lot of fun. Gotham Central sounds promising as ever, and the cover by Human Target artist Cliff Chiang rocks. I'm a little ticked off that DC is only just now getting around to reprinting "Half a Life", months after the Eisner win and more than a year and a half after the story originally ran. They could stand to learn a few lessons from Marvel's trade program, which is several times speedier and more exhaustive.

The solicits for Superman/Batman sound a little boring, but I felt that way about the current arc also, and it's turned out to be surprisingly enjoyable, so I'll keep an open mind. I'm excited about Gail Simone and John Byrne on Action Comics, too. There's a creative team that warrants a look.

Everybody bow their heads and say a little prayer for Fallen Angel, which is officially shipping its last issue in May. I couldn't get into the book, but I know it was quality work and am still sad to see it go. There's not near enough books written by Peter David on the market.

Also, it has a hot cover. Just saying.

Hal Jordan. Geoff Johns. Carlos Pacheco. That's one combination that thrills and delights, so yes, I will be picking up Green Lantern #1.

The Rann/Thanagar War could potentially be interesting. I'm not really sure. I like Dave Gibbons and Ivan Reis well enough, but it's hard to get much of a feel for the tone with what we've been given. It does have Adam Strange, though, which is a major plus in my book. It's also got Kyle Rayner on the cover, which makes me hopeful that he won't die in Green Lantern: Rebirth. I know not everyone feels the same, but I love Kyle and hope he sticks around.

Any month with new Ex Machina is a good month.

Desolation Jones sounds kinda cool. It's Warren Ellis in "crazy sci-fi ideas" mode, which definitely speaks to my tastes. It might be worth looking into.

Sleeper, the little series that couldn't, also wraps up this month. This was an underrated piece of work that will hopefully find future audiences in TPB form.

Finally, depending on the price, I might have to pick up the Alex Ross Batman figure. I'd get Black Canary on the general belief that Black Canary is awesome, but Ross' Canary has always looked a bit mannish to me.

In other words, yeah, it's an expensive month. Speaking as one college guy to another, I feel your pain, kid_flash.

What's in my wallet? Not a bloody lot if these DC/Rebellion trades have any say in the matter it seems...

Definatly going to lay my hands on Anderson Psi-Division when it emerges. Really liking the idea of doing them chronologically, just a shame they're so hard to get ahold of...

Those ARE hardcovers, aren't they? That's a little factoid that entirely slipped my notice. The necessity of these volumes just crept up that much more, balanced by the fact that I wasn't all that crazy about the Batman and 2nd JLA tabloid. We'll see how the month goes, but considering Sleeper, Human Target, and Fallen Angel are getting the axe, and She-Hulk is going on hiatus for a while, I may have more cash to spend on something like this.

On the other hand, maybe I'll just use it to buy more Spirit Archives or Will Eisner graphic novels on eBay.

Also, worth pointing out that Gail Simone is becoming the Bendis for DC, except with a lot more hair and estrogen. She's tagged as the writer for Villains United, giving her 3 regular monthly books. However, given what she managed to do with Cheshire and Lady Shiva in Birds of Prey (and Wonder Woman, and the Huntress, and...), I'm kind of curious what she can do with guys like Deathstroke, Lex Luthor, and the new uber-creepy Dr. Psycho.

For some reason, I also feel compelled to point out that the Comics Code Authority would never have let that one out when it was at the peak of its influence.

It always seemed to me like Geoff Johns was the Bendis of DC, especially after FLASH. TEEN TITANS started up...Johns. Bring Hal Jordan back...Johns. HAWKMAN...Johns. I'm not looking at the solits, but I think right now he's on four monthly books. And who knows what he's doing with COUNTDOWN in the near future. Thankfully, he's not stretching himself as thing as Bendis does. Or if he is, the quality remains (except for about a year's worth of FLASH).

There has been no official announcement other than the fact that if you go to where the solicits used to be, there's nothing there but a message saying "Solicitations will no longer be posted here. Sorry!" As to why: well, I'll let the site owner, Brian, answer that.

For those who do not want to suffer through that ugly as sin Site That Shall Not Be Named crap, both DC Comics and Comic Book Resources have the May comic information up:

    By week:
    http://dccomics.com/comics/?dat=20050501&s=31

    By titles:
    http://www.comicbookresources.com/ne...em.cgi?id=4815

I don't know why Toonzone doesn't have this stuff up on their site but they didn't even bother to link the information at CBR or DC Comics. How come?

The Flash 222 - Rogues War continues, not much else to say.
    Green Lantern 1 - Finally.
JSA 73 - Captain Marvel returns? Sequel to "Black Reign"? Spectre tie-in?
Nightwing 102 - Devin Grayson + the great art team of Phil Hester and Andy Parks.
Y - The Last Man 33 - Girl on Girl.
"Leaping Lanny and Randy Savage are brothers, and Randy Savage, your name is Randy Poffo. THAT'S RIGHT, RANDY POFFO. YOUR BROTHER IS A HUMAN BEING. YOU'RE NOTHING BUT A SCUMBAG. THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE; YOU'RE A DOG. YOUR NAME IS POFFO." - Ronnie Garvin to Randy Savage, ICW Wrestling, 1980.
