So Harry and Mary Jane briefly dated back when Peter got bit by the spider? Is this what Bendis was referring to as one of the things from the first issue he was going to explore? It's a neat surprise but I was hoping it'd be something else like that strange marking on his wrist from the early issue. It's a surprise but it doesn't completely work. The early issues had the two almost all over each other but now this sort of throws it off abit but it does add something new to the Peter/Harry relationship.

I thought this issue was pretty good, despite the retcon of MJ's and Harry's relationship.

I guess, somehow, Harry will inject himself with the goblin formula to become Hobgoblin and then fight Spider-Man?

The most interesting question this issue raises is the love triangle between MJ, Harry, and Peter. BMB seems like he might be setting up another Peter/MJ breakup so that Harry and MJ could possibly get back together. Too bad Gwen is dead, and unavailable for Peter to hook up with.

In all likelihood though, MJ will reject Harry even if he tries to get her back, and Pete and Harry will have a big battle as Spider-Man and Hobgoblin.

I was going to pick this up, but decided to dump it from my pull list. Bendis isn't even making it worth reading this book on a single-issue basis anymore. It's so much better in the TPB format.
Yup. It's a signature. Go away if you're expecting something interesting here.

I'm not getting the Harry/MJ relationship either. It seems wrong, basically. There's simply no way Peter would not have found out/MJ told him or something.

Over than that, it was OK. There wasn't any need for the origin recap, or that big dialouge-less spalsh page.

I'm seriously considering waiting for each issue to finish and reading them in one go. Bendis is pushing his look with his pacing, at present time.

I've gone back and looked into those issues and the Harry/MJ thing does work but it just doesn't fit right. We never see them together in public like Harry said in this month's issue so that conveniently covers that. It's just the way MJ and Peter act around each other in the first few issues that it doesn't seem to work correctly.

I agree that the Harry/MJ thing seems a little off, but overall I thought it was a really good issuse, I mean Harry's back and he's pissed off. I think this is going to be a really good arc. It's good to see that we're getting back to the Spider-Man mythology, the team-ups were good but I think this up coming arc is going to kock our socks off.

I was surprised to see Harry/MJ connection, nice twist thrown in there. I really wonder how Peter can be so comfortable with Harry knowing who he is, perhaps he isn't since he yelled at MJ. @_@ but that final scene, with Harry holding his mask, and saying coming back and seeing who's dating his girlfriend..

There's definitely some tensions there, and possibly some bridges Peter wished he wouldn't have to cross. I wonder how this whole Hobgoblin thing will go. ****

I wonder why this wasn't addressed when Harry returned the first time all those months ago. He seemed really excited that Peter and MJ were dating at that point but why this sudden reversal now? I understand it does throw in a little more tension but it doesn't feel right to me.

I think it's becuse back then he was under heavy heavy hypnosysis. Now he's just had months to think about how his life is ruined and it's Peter's "fault". He's seen and know everything, he's lost his mind. So i can see how he sees one kiss as him and MJ are dating.

I guess that is a logical explaination but it seemed to be in the flashback they were actual boyfriend/girlfriend. It wasn't just one kiss to make Harry think they might be but they actually are going out but in a secret manner. But the hypnosis thing is a really good point. Who knows what Harry subjected to during that.

Actually Ultimates 2 and Ultimate X-men have been moving at a nicer pace than they used to. With Ultimate X-men we still get a lot of set-up, but the writing is so great that I don't care. I've accepted that Ultimates is more about the behind the scenes stuff than the actuall world saving, and that said I've been very happy with what I've been reading in that book. Hell, the ending for the last issue was probably one of the best ending for a single Ultimate book since the more early issues of USM and UXM.

With that said I'm not sure about USM anymore. It is in no way as good as UXM or Ultimates, but both of those books have had huge jumps in quality so it's hard to tell if USM has actually had a quality drop.

But seriously Bendis' use of Spiderman:TAS grade generic bad guys is bothering me. And the slow nature of his books is finally getting on my nerves. Beyond that he's being predictable. Sorry, but so far I'm not seeing him doing anything with Harry that the movie or original comics haven't already done. And seriously how was that ending supposed to shock me in anyway, first of all we knew that was going to be a plot point. Secondly, it was a plot point anyone could've seen coming, we didn't even need a flashback. A MJ-Peter-Harry love triangle is something anyone could think up and everyone could see coming, it's just not worth doing.

The art is also just becoming boring and generic. I like Bagley's work but it's all just becoming rather boring.

Is that what we're suppose to think is that they were sercretly dating? That's seems a little off, but I suppose that there would have to be more for harry to think she's his girlfriend.

Unless I read the dialogue wrong but I get that impression when MJ says:

"How could you tell...when you refuse to make eye contact with me in public."

"We should sit together on the bus."

    And when Harry says:

    "I've never had a girlfriend."

That seals the deal for me which is probably why I have a bit of a problem with it. It does a bit of disservice to MJ too. It's a good little twist but I don't think it's being handled well.

The whole thing feels really odd. MJ seems like the type to tell Peter, or that's the impression I have of her. I'm actualy kinda hoping that Harry is so crazy and messed up that it never even really happened, that his relationship with Mary Jane is all a delusion.

I thought it was cool. I totally geeked out when I finished it. I knew that the hypnosis had something to do with Harry acting all weird. Plus, I thought it was the Cellar Door line was awesome. Overall I think Bendis is kicking ass with this arc.

It's a good story but it doesn't need to be stretched out this bad.

Yet another full page splash with no words on it at all....This is starting to get on my nerves.

Yeah, I know what you mean. But if you're going to read a Bendis book odds are the good stories are going to take a while.
