1939: Marvel Comics #1 is published by Martin Goodman. Despite the name of the book, the company will not be known as Marvel Comics until 1963.
1940: The Justice Society of America unites for the first time in All-Star Comics #3, making it the first superhero team in the comics.
1966: After teases and near-misses stretching back more than a year, readers finally hit the jackpot as we see Mary-Jane Watson's face for the first time in Amazing Spider-Man #42, drawn by John Romita Sr.
1987: Don Lomax publishes the first issue of the autobiographical Vietnam Journal for Apple Comics.

Nov 2, 1927: Steve Ditko, co-creator of Marvel Comics' Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, is born in Johnstown, PA.
Nov 2, 1981: Wallace "Wally" Wood, prolific artist of the Silver Age, dies of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Nov 3, 1916: Harry Lampert, artist for the Golden Age Flash, is born.
Nov 3, 1928: Osamu Tezuka, father of Japanese manga, is born in Osaka, Japan.
Nov 3, 1998: Bob Kane, co-creator of Batman, passes away at the age of 82.
Nov 5, 1938: James Steranko, comic book historian, writer/artist for Captain America and Nick Fury in the 1970's and arguably the creator of the first graphic novel, is born in Reading, PA.
Nov 5, 1977: Rene Goscinny, writer of the Asterix comics, passes away at the age of 51.
Nov 6, 2001: Gray Morrow, renowned sci-fi comic book artist and art director for the Spider-Man (1967) animated TV show, dies of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Nov 9, 1993: Ross Andru, comic artist for DC and Marvel Comics, passes away.
Nov 10, 1960: Neil Gaiman, author of DC/Vertigo's Sandman, is born.
Nov 11, 1928: Goseki Kojima, co-creator of Lone Wolf and Cub, is born (although some place the date as Nov 3, 1928).
Nov 11, 1943: Dave Cockrum, top creator for the X-Men, is born in Pendleton, OR.
Nov 13, 2004: Harry Lampert, artist for the Golden Age Flash, passes away from brain cancer at the age of 88.
Nov 15, 1915: Martin Nodell, artist for the Golden Age Green Lantern, is born in Philadelphia, PA.
Nov 18, 1953: Alan Moore, author of Watchmen and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (among numerous other titles), is born in Northampton, England.
Nov 19, 19-mumbledy-mumble: Min S. Ku, artist for Justice League Adventures, is born.
Nov 20, 1900: Chester Gould, creator of Dick Tracy, is born in Pawnee, OK.
Nov 22, 1922: Charles Monroe Schulz, creator of Peanuts, is born in Minneapolis, MN.
Nov 22, 1989: Clarence Charles "C.C." Beck, SHAZAM! artist, passes away at the age of 79.
Nov 23, 1961: Masamune Shirow, creator of the Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell manga, is born in Kobe City, Japan.
Nov 25, 1973: Rex Maxon, comic book and strip artist and co-creator of Turok Son of Stone, passes away at the age of 85.
Nov 25, 2004: Bob Haney, co-creator of original Teen Titans, the Doom Patrol, and Metamorpho the Element Man, passes away due to complications from a stroke at the age of 78.
Nov 29, 1981: Dr. Fredric Wertham, author of Seduction of the Innocent and unwitting father of the Comics Code Authority, passes away at the age of 86.
Nov 30, 19-mumbledy-mumble: Keith Giffen, writer for the Legion of Superheroes and the "Bwah-hah-hah" Justice League, is born.
