X-men history (cable)

For anybody who is a serious x-afficianado:

I was just wondering if anyone could explain to me, in as much or as little detail as desired, the history behind characters like Cable (nathan summers), Phoenix (rachel summers) and the whole age of apocolypse shebang. I have always been perplexed by how all of these characters exist in present day continuity, like x-force and cable and how they do not exist in a future marvel universe or something. If anyone has any good x-men websites with a lot of background information on x-men eras and continuity, please post them.
