Questions for Glenn Oyabe (sound editor for Johnny Bravo, Grim & Evil)

You might know Glenn Oyabe as G&ESound on the boards, he is the sound editor for Johnny Bravo, Grim & Evil, and Eltingville Club. He has been kind enough to answer some intelligent questions about cartoons and sound effects be sure to ask them here. Hey Jimmy!!!!! It's kinda quiet in here so I'm gonna take a nap for about 3 days. Wake me if you have a question.
Seeing as Johnny Bravo is cancelled and we're between airings of Grim and Evil this might be better in the fall.
Answers from my head------
1) there aren't any footstep sounds for Grim unless his robe is off
2) Billy's footsteps always have a squeak on every step unless he hasn't got shoes on
3)Fart sounds are allowed on CN, but not so sure about the WB
4)The Tie Fighters SFX in the first Star Wars movie is actually a mix of effects with an Elephant trumpet backwards
5) I don't know crap about Spongebob so don't ask
6)I usually over-do the sound effects on face slaps etc. because a guy named Michael Geisler once told me " it ain't funny unless somebody is getting hurt"( only relavent in a cartoon)
7) Hector Con Carne's brain squishy sounds are actually from a hot water bottle

I have been reading all your posts about Grim & Evil and have been trying to pass your comments along to the show's creator Maxwell Atoms.
We are trying to hurry up and get these new shows out for you to see and we are so thankful for your patience so, hang out, have some pringles and keep watching cuz the new ones are coming soon . . . .

Well, here's a suggestion for the last episode:

• Grim leaves
• Billy becomes smart
• It is admitted that Evil ConCarne is not factual, but a show that the characters on Grim Adventures like to watch (or vise versa, I think it would actually be funnier the other way!)

Hey Patrick, I'm not famous but I did see J Lo one time. Anyway, to answer your question---1 Week
ther is alot of sound in these shows and the creator ( Maxwell Atoms, not God) likes the show to sound full. Also, the ECC shows take more time because of all the gadgets ( Stink machine,Enrique Jr. the robot dog,etc. Look for a great gadget called the "Poke Digi-tank" in the 2nd new episode called "Search and Estroy"

Hey General, I love those ideas. I thought that would be cool if Grim were watching ECC on TV or Boscov watching Billy and Mandy or some kinda cross over episode. Great Idea!!!
Sheepfan, I wish I could answer your question but the truth is, when I get my copy of the video to start working on, it has the voices on it but nothing else. No music, no sound effects, no footsteps or anything. I'll ask Maxwell and get back to you. Thanks for the great question-G

Q for Glenn: How much of the decision on what sound effects are used is up to you? I imagine that if an explosion occurs, a loud BOOM is called for, but do you get to pick out the exact volume, echoing, etc. Also, where do you get all of the sounds from? Are they all stored & played on a computer? Did you have to get some or all of them specifically for G&E, and if so how?

P.S. Duncanzits, should there be an article about these threads be listed on the News board?

I'm waiting to contact the music (not to be confused with sound effects) guy for Johnny Bravo, Glenn told me to talk to him. Then we can make a lot of noise about the Cartoon Cartoon sound/music party.

Also I just read on the Internet that Glenn worked on the Courage episode "The Duck Brothers / Shirley the Medium". Is that true?

The only time I have to modify any voices is usually on a creature --Enrique Jr. robot dog or a big scary monster--thanks for the question!!!-G

lets see. . . .on Grim it's the supernatural stuff like when he appears in a burst of clor and smoke, on ECC it's the gadgets and sci fi stuff like the delvolving ray, the stink ray also big face slaps and two monkeys having a poop fight. ( ha ha ha, I said poop)
On Johnny Bravo, the producers requested a swish sound for every JB movement which got kinda tiring so that's not my fav. My fav sounds are creating something for when Karl gets hurt because he bugs me!!! thanks-G
