Cartoon Network & Mattel Sign “Secret Saturdays” Deal

    Like This Thread!
It’s being reported that Cartoon Network has signed a deal with Mattel regarding “The Secret Saturdays”, so fans of the series will be able to purchase a lot of merchandise next year. This is not the first deal that has been signed, as several video games are also being created, which is being discussed in this thread.

Through the partnership, Mattel will manufacture, market and sell a wide range of toys inspired by the new series, including action figures, playsets, role-play items, and more. THE SECRET SATURDAYS television series debuted on Cartoon Network this October as a part of the network's Friday night fantasy/adventure programming block, and the new product line is expected to be available at mass retailers nationwide for fall 2009. This newest Cartoon Network original series is a character-rich and content-driven series that follows a family of world-saving cryptozoologists on their plight to discover cryptids and protect against all the underlying evil in the world.

It's good to hear that there will be a toy line based on The Secret Saturdays, however, I'm cynical enough to believe that there won't be a Drew Saturday action figure, at least not initially. The 1st wave of figures will probably start with figures of Zak, Doc, Fiskerton and Argost and maybe Doyle, but not Drew. If they make a Drew action figure at all, she'll probably come with a vehicle that you'll have to buy.

Why? Because toy companies have this belief that female action figures don't sell very well, which is why in the toy line for Disney's Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, we got figures for all the main cast except Mira Nova, and in the toy line for Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys, there were figures of the entire crew except for Shao Lin, the token female. The Avatar toy line had no Katara and the Ben 10 toy has no Gwen action figure, at least none that I know of.

Perhaps. However, it could be different this time. The ones that are being released for “Skunk Fu!” have the female characters included, such as Fox, so maybe these ones for “The Secret Saturdays” will have Drew. She is an integral part of the team, after all.

Well let's hope this is not the case as Drew and her sword would make a great figure, not to mention that she deserves one. If the standard figures sell well then they may reissue them in 2 packs in which case you may see a Drew.

But some figure lines had some popular/sought after female
figures. Most recently Pirates of the carribbean AWE series 3 had a really sought after Elizabeth, as did a few Star Wars Ep 3 figures with a Luminara Unduli figure which was popular with fans and at one time sold on eBay for close to $30, now you can get her for under $10.

But it is rare when a female figure sells extreamly well...

Were the Alien Force figures popular?? I thought about picking a few up to add to my giant MOC figure collection.

I don't know if there were and Katara figures but I have seen Gwen figures for the Ben Ten line. Anyway, I kinda figure that Secret Saturdays would get their own line of toys.

If this means anything, is season 3 far behind?

Sweet... A Secret Saturdays Line of toys.. and to think, Some folks think cryptozoology is bunk.. well the truth be told, I had a funny feeling that this show is a bigger hit than most folks realized.. plus they get their toyline.. I guess I'll be getting a complete family next season, and that includes a Drew figure.

As for the Video games? I sure hope they put one out for a PS 2 (After all if I have to go buy a Wii or PS3 well then might give me a reason to find me a PS3 with PS2 Backwards compatiblity..(after all who says you can't play your PS2 Games and keep them too?)

But this is a major bit of news I feel.. at least now we just have to see some of those cryptids and a third season show up.

Well toy companies need to rethink their strategy when it comes to action figures of female characters. A lot of times they miss a key demographic namely the female group that deserves a strong female character type. I mean I still have my Kim Possible cheerleader figurine in her box and in fact nowadays you don't see action figurines of women due to the fact that a lot of people seeing it being silly to have a female collectible of any nature. I mean who here wants to see a Gwen Tennyson figurine? A lot of fan boys do not to mention those female demographics that believe in an independent woman. The same thing would go for Drew Saturday. I feel that without a strong female lead, you might as well set back cartoons to the 1970's where there were no Wonder Woman dolls for the DC comic book collectors. In short, toy companies need to rethink their strategies and come up with better excuses for not selling female dolls than just the fact that the character is a female one. After all if they're in it to sell toys, they're one demographic short of a full deck.

Cryptozoology 101: The truth is real.

Friday nights on CN.. Action, Adventure, and.. Chilli Fries?

Kim Possible 2002-2007. Save the Cheerleader, Save the World. and for one brief Moment, we the fans, did save the world.

As much as I hate to admit it, a lot of people or mainly kids don't care much for female action figures. I think back to my childhood and my figures I plays with, about 95% of them were male figures, same with my friends. Now as an adult collector I buy female figures to either complete a series or because it's a rare piece, so o think collectors would enjoy a Drew figure more so than a young boy. I think most "action figures" are geared toward and purchased by boys more so than girls and most 4-10 year old boys aren't going to care much for a strong female lead, but as a grown up I do like female leads and action figures based on females...

There BETTER be a Drew Saturday action figure, complete with Fire Sword. And a functioning "Claw" too.

It's possible if the show's good enough. I think TSS deserves it. And besides, if TC didn't do Cryptozoology 101, I'd have nothing to read on Fridays and he wouldn't get any apples or cookies.

The season should finish by Feburary, and the CN Upfront is usually in Winter or Early Spring. There's only 3 episodes left of the season. There is plenty of time to renew it by then.
