PPG Movie to debut during CN's Oscar Special

During the Oscar special that Cartoon Network has planned for March(read about it in the News section), there will be a very special preview of "The Powerpuff Girls: The Movie".

It will likely be the first trailer for the movie..

So why am I upset?

Because WB has failed to advertise it alongside their movies!

Jimmy Neutron was plugged like hell for about 6 months, and it was barely able to reach third place in the box office for its opening week.

So how the hell will PPG do well when it has not been advertised at all? WB has no plans to air any movie trailers for it, nor are there any WB kids movies coming up in the next few months. Harry Potter would have been the best choice to air a trailer in.

So the only way any casual PPG fan will hear about it is through a one-time TV special in March.

Peachy. That's just peachy.

Yet again, another cartoon meets its demise before it even gets a chance. Way to go, WB.

Becuase WB has no idea how to treat it's franschies correctly. The PPG are most likely now going to be listed right next to Batman Beyond in the long list of KidsWB casulties.

"Jimmy Neutron" was so plugged because his movie was based on original(?) material, not a well-known book, movie or long-running TV series. Also, the CG animation for this flick was done by neither Pixar nor whoever did the animation for "Shrek" and "AntZ," but by a CG outfit based in Houston, Texas. Nickelodeon, being Nickelodeon, had to pull out all the stops to promote it, since it has plans to make a TV series out of it which will come out either next month or next fall. Powerpuff Girls has been around for a while, and has a loyal following/fanbase.

So how the hell will PPG do well when it has not been advertised at all? WB has no plans to air any movie trailers for it, nor are there any WB kids movies coming up in the next few months. Harry Potter would have been the best choice to air a trailer in.

Does it necessarily have to be a G-rated kids' movie? They could splice the PPG Movie trailer (once it's made) into any PG-rated WB movie the studio knows a kid will want to see. It can also be slipped into the forthcoming Samurai Jack: The Premiere Movie when it comes out on Home Video/DVD. Also, will the trailer be one using clips from the movie, or will it be a specially-made awareness raiser (with clips from the movie, of course)?

So the only way any casual PPG fan will hear about it is through a one-time TV special in March.

Don't forget there's Entertainment Tonight and Coming Attractions. And after the TV special, you'll be seeing the PPG movie advertised for the next five months.

Was that a deliberate pun?

I'm expecting the Powerpuff movie to be rated PG for violence- those frequent cartoony fights have always been part of the PPG format.

And it's all too probable, they'll slip in some body-functions humor (ala 'Shrek') just to attract the little boys. The general showbiz canon, that boys don't want to watch movies that star girls, seems to be easing up a bit, but it's definitely not dead.

I looked into it. There aren't any.

All of WB's movies are PG-13 and R up to June.

The only PG-rated movie is Scooby Doo, and that's on June 14th. That's not exactly the best place to start putting in a movie trailer.

And as far as show-based movies doing well in theaters, we need to get over the Rugrats Movie mentality.

Rugrats Movie was lucky. It was lucky because it has the power to hypnotize all kids in the nation to like it, and parents too (of course, only the first 3 years of the show actually were likable).

But there are other show-based movies that aren't so lucky. Like the Recess movie. How much money do you think THAT pulled in? I don't even know if it did much more than breaking even.

And the same goes for the various Batman animated movies. I doubt those pulled big numbers at all. The only reason it didn't affect the show was because WB didn't have any other cards up their sleeves at that point in time. That was before Kids WB even existed.

I was going to add the Sesame Street and Barney movies, but I decided against it. :P

I think most people could tell how quickly THOSE bombed.

"Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" was the only one that was released in the theaters. (I saw it when it opened on Christmas of '93, and i own the DVD. Looks fantastic on PS2. Plus, it was the only batman film i saw in the theater. Good thing i avoided Jole Schumacher's bat films.) Everything else after that went straight to video ("SubZero" was going to get a theatrical release, but the plans were scraped.) Also, "A Goofy Movie" did moderetly well. It opened at number two when it was released ("Bad Boys" was at the top back then) so that ain't too bad. As for other 'toon movies. It's a shame that "Rugrats" was the only one that suceeded while others have failed. We're lucky enough that "Transformers: The Movie" got a huge cult following. I sure hope Warner Bros dosen't drop the ball on this with "The Powerpuff Girls". It's bad enough we almost lost Cathy, Tara, and E.G. over a silly contract despute or something like that. I sure hope ET shows the trailer, but knowing ET, and their bias towards most animation, they might sweep it under the rug. We'll see.

I don't think the PPG movie is going to bomb at all! hell I want to see it myself, and it's the same people that make the series who are doing the movie. Not WBA. WB is only the distrubitor, not the production company.

[indent]Warner Bros. doesn't have to attach the PPG trailer to a WB movie. Trailers get attached to movies from other studios all the time. For instance the Star Wars Episode 2 trailer debuted with Disney's Monster's Inc. and Disney's Monster's Inc. had a trailer that only ran with WB's Harry Potter. WB is missing huge opportunities though by not also promoting it with their own stuff.

My problem is that the only big animated movies for 2002 are all AFTER July, save for Lilo and Stitch, which is PPG's biggest competition, and The Hey Arnold Movie, which is their next biggest competition.

There's a chance that it could appear on the E.T. DVD in March, but I highly doubt a WB trailer would appear on a Universal DVD.

PERHAPS it could show in The Time Machine, a Dreamworks movie. It's epic enough to warrant lots of people, but it's also rated PG-13.

PERHAPS it could show during The Scorpion King in April. Like TTM, it will attract plenty of people, but it's, again, PG-13.

However, the only movie I truly believe the trailer to feature in will be Spiderman in May. It's simply THE movie to put a trailer in, and WB would be gonzo not to put it in there.

I'd say the same for Star Wars Episode II, but.. like the last movie, I don't think it's going to be as popular as everyone thinks.

Spider-man would be a good film for The Powerpuff Trailer to be in front of. Those were the two films i was looking forward to this year, until i saw the teaser trailer for Lilo & Stitch. (You gotta love that scene where Stitch litterly drops in on Belle & Beast. Priceless.) So now that makes three. It'll be interesting to see how this trailer turns out. I wonder if Tom Kenny will narrate it? That would be neat, but his voice would give it away.

I don't know who to trust. Craig insists it's July, but the distributers have been known to do things behind peoples' backs..

It's July 3rd, I just read an article at Variety.com about how CN is going to market it. Unfortunately, I had no time to post it.
