First Japanese Powerpuff DVD released

This is the first of a total of 13 DVDs to come out within the next year. It's a hybrid DVD with subtitles.



This DVD has 2 hours worth of episodes, as every DVD will. There will also be 3 boxed sets. The first DVD contains....

- Abracadaver
- Boogie Frights
- Buttercrush
- Fuzzy Logic
- Geshundfight
- Mommy Fearest
- Monkey See, Doggie Do
- Octi Evil

13 in a year???? And how many do we have in the past, what, 2 years? 4 DVDs? Again, the balance is off center.

26 hours of episodes, that is about 78 episodes, too. Gee, they are going to get all the episodes on DVD in the course of a year. Man, if they do that to the Batman animated series....

There will be a 5th DVD out by Spring in the US. Don't forget Rhino Home Video is a large company who produces hundreds of videos a year. The company doing the PPG DVDs is a small company.

Here are the release dates:

Vol. 2 and Vol. 3: January 26, 2002
Vol. 4 and Vol. 5: February 28, 2002
Blossom's Boxed Set Vol. 1-5: March 13, 2002
Bubbles' Boxed Set Vol. 6-9: April 24, 2002

So from the looks of it, 2 will be released monthly. I'll assume volumes 6 and 7 will be out in March and volumes 8 and 9 will be out in April to coincide with their boxed set. Keep in mind the final 3 eps of PPG have yet to be finished so they haven't been dubbed over there yet. They'll probably be on their own Japanese DVD, making it a total of 14.

Also each DVD is coded to region 2 only and is $30 American.

All I can say is "wow". One thing you have to know about Japan is that their animation industry works hard for the money, and it shows. People there are willing to buy series, watch prime-time toons, and go crazy with the merchandise. I'm not surprised they are releasing all of those either. We often hear about anime fans buying whole seasons on DVD, well I think this is a true reversal, in which the japanese buy an american cartoon subtitled.

The last time I talked to someone that recently went to Japan, I heard the Powerpuff Girls was the biggest import cartoon over there. Granted, that its probably because the stlyized anime looking characters, but its still big.

I really wish they'd release some of the Cartoon Cartoons this on side of the ocean, but I think they view us as a niche market, as opposed to a mainstream sales demographic.

Japanese TV usually has this format:

- Air a new episode every week
- No repeats.
- If you miss it, tough luck. You have to buy it.
- Release the series on DVD when it's finished.

American animation has its following over in Japan too like Japanese animation does here. South Park has 10 DVDs out in Japan. We have 9 but some of our DVDs contain 5 episodes each whereas all of theirs contain 4. Both nations have the movie on DVD.

FACTOID: The South Park Japanese dub had to be aired on pay TV like Cowboy Bebop.

I wonder if Japan treats our cartoons on DVd like we treat theirs. Will the Japanese DVD have two language tracks? Japanese dub and Original English with Japanese subtitles (hey...that sounded funny).

I wonder if their are Japanese otakus who bash their dubs and praise the original English.

I'm sure there are. And with reason- PPG's English-speaking voice cast does a fine job!

in that case..someone send me a copy of it! I'm interested in seeing how the Japanese treat our shows, especaly the PPG. (Not to mention Batman Beyond)

Yeah? Funny, I remeber being told that the Japanese vocies for "South Park" were actualy pretty bad. As for their TV viewing format, that's pretty sad. I don't know what I would do without repeats of epsoides I've missed.
