yeah people who dont like sam jack probably dont come here...
Actually, I voted No, but I don't "hate it", I just don't enjoy it anymore. I liked the movie and thought that it was visually very impressive, but the story from one episode to another has gotten somewhat stale for my tastes.
I watch the show when I come across it every now and again, but it just seems that Jack does the same things over and over again. He travels to a new land and meets new people where they tell him about a way he can get back to his time, or they tell him of their struggles and he decides to help them out, then he goes and defeats the bad guys, whoever they may be.
I don't know, I'll keep watching the show to see if things pick up, but I've seen about 5 or 6 eps total and so far nothing is really grabbing me.
oh ok! :d

For me, Samurai Jack is just a poor imitation of a lot of influences. The plot is all but stolen from Frank Miller's Ronin. In Miller's Ronin, a samurai's master is killed by a demonic being. Ronin uses a sacred sword which feeds of the blood of the inoccent to avenge his master's death and to pierce the heart of the evil. Ronin defeats the evil, but the evil is resurrected in the future, so Ronin possesses the body of a security officer in a prison to hunt down and defeat this evil. Now, not only does this plot actually have conflict (because, you see, Ronin kinda has to kill pure hearted people inorder to kill the evil) besides "You killed someone I really liked then shipped me often into another time" but Frank Miller stays very true to the order of samurai. Just about every shot of this show is taken from Blade Runner, The Fifth Element, Highlander or just about any other sci-fi film, and these aren't really even parodies. I see scenes and ideas taken straight from movies like the original Planet of the Apes and tap my fingers just waiting for something original to come from it. I can't even consider the lack of black lines original because they constantly point back to Sleeping Beauty. Everything either reminds me of Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff girls or even a sad reflection of Akira. Now, Jack does quite a few things right, but he does a hell of a lot of things wrong. It burns my eyes to watch. It's so painful to see. But it's not like I can't laugh at samurai either. The Tick's Samurai Paul is an exceptable comedic samurai because at least the animators/writers know everything they have Paul doing is backwords, but you read interviews with the Jack creators and they seem to think they're staying very true to the character of a samurai while trying to make it comedic. They couldn't be more wrong. This show adds nothing new or fresh, and just reuses all the great ideas that have come before.
I do enjoy the voice of the bad guy though, he was in Highlander 3, and I always enjoy quoting that guy's last words.
"You were great in your day, Superman. But when the time came to cash in your chips, it was only natural that this diseased maniac would be your banker." - Lex Luthor, Superman 1978

by the way the bad guy is "Aku - the shape shifting wizzard" just to let you know.

Similar, just about. But Jack is a TV show, and "Ronin" isn't.
(It'd make a better live-action movie than Samurai Jack would, though.)

Well, I always knew there'd be people who either loved or hated Samurai Jack. (I consider myself one of the rabid former... ^_^) For example, my best friend John, who's a big anime fan himself, can't STAND the CN 'house style' animation. Even I was a bit apprehensive at first, and I suppose I may have jumped to some REALLY early conclusions when I first heard about it... I was tempted to think it was an anime rip off (Kenshin... Ninja Scrolls... Samurai Pizza Cats... *SMACKS HERSELF* oh good GOD.)
But when I actually sat down to watch the previews online... I found myself wiping an unintentional ribbon of drool from my quivering fangirl lips. Maybe it was the thrumming techno music, perhaps the delightfully dynamic swordplay, mayhaps the protagonist's unorthodox yet rather striking good looks... *dissolves into giggles*...
But anyways, enough of that. Blatant fangirlism makes me lose my legitimacy. There are some good reasons to love SJ, if you so choose.
The no-outlines thing: I get quite a kick out of this, and I think it's a neat change from the usual thing... There aren't many cartoons out there that don't use linework, and that's what makes SJ so neat for me to look at. If it hearkens back to the Disney works you mentioned, the all I could think of is that they were interested in exploring that style.
Sampling Sci-fi?: I have no problem with referencing in my personal opinion, it makes it all the more fun for me to pick out the little nuggets. It's like finding little treats for me. "The Shining" reference recently absolutely drove me batty with laughter. If that sort of thing turns you off, then I suppose you should steer clear of the series. But I personally think it'd be a fanboy's delight. I mean, isn't Genndy kind of a Fanboy himself?
As for historical and ideological accuracy, well.. it may sound smarmy to say this, but ... it's just a cartoon? *FLEES*
I mean, if I were looking for some real and actual feudal Japan stuff, I'd go rent some Kurosawa. Sure, it'd be neat if they could make it PERFECT... but with a Y7 show, there's some things you just can't do... I mean, could you even IMAGINE them sliding in the idea of Seppuku? That'd be censor-smacked faster than a Cowboy Bebop ep.
For the most part, I think they approach the idea with a lot of good intentions, and I think they did a darn good job considering. It's got a lot of heart for a show that could have easily fallen into the pit of hackneyed "flash in the pan" action series. I mean, how could you not be impressed by the "hearing sight" sequence in ep 7 with the Archers? They do these little artsy, purely visual things every now and again that just impress me to no end. They've given something that makes the kids squeal, and makes animation fans like myself gush. It's fun and we love it!![]()
I could go on ad nauseam about the wild philosophy and the taoism possibilities offered by the show, but that's a topic for another post. Besides, brevity is the soul of wit. Anyhoo, I get a major charge out of Samurai Jack, and will continue to be a devoted fan well into the future. I suppose that everyone's entitled to their own opinion. But I enjoy myself, so I suppose that's all that really matters to me.![]()

I think Samurai Jack is one of the greatest actions cartoons out there. I think its biggest problem is it airs at what I think is a crummy time slot and is only shown twice a week so if You happen to miss an episode you have to wait a while to see it sometimes month so you only have to chances to catch it.
Twice a week? Did they do away with the Sunday 8pm show? I hope not!Originally posted by ccffan01

at 7pm to Saturdays at 12 noon.
