Issue of Discussion: Violence in Sports

    Like This Thread!
This has caused my brain to go crazy after the Yankees/Red Sox game Sunday. They say that the Yankees guys should get charged, but what about Pedro? Some sports are based in violence (football, hockey) and some aren't like auto racing and baseball. Did you agree with some current sport's rules? Who thinks that Pedro should get charged?

The law and sports should remain seperate, at least as far as on the field stuff is concerned. I think that unless it's something VERY extreme (the closest thing that comes to mind is the Donald Brashear incident) that the sport should govern itself.

Throwing inside is part of the game, and would not be nearly as neccesary if MLB and the umpires actually ENFORCED the strike zone.

And as for the Zimmer incident, please. The old guy charged Pedro and threw a punch. Pedro basically put his hands up to keep some distance and took a step to the side, Zimmer fell over.

And for the record, I am not a Red Sox or Pedro Martinez fan. But I AM a Mets fan born and raised, so I share the Sox disdain for the Evil Empire.

Hey, i really didnt "see" it but ive heard about it, anyone care to fill me in. From what i heard, the coach of the yanks ran up to the plate after the pitcher hit someone on purpose and then Pedro just threw him down.

Yeah i think that he should be charged, but only if he wasnt provoked.

If the Yankee players beat up that guy for rooting for the Sox...then they should be charged. However Pedro went inside and hit Garcia (maybe) but he was barely grazed (if that), more importantly that's apart of the game. I mean look at Clemens, one of the biggest headhunters in the last 20 years, people have short memories. And as far as Zimmer is concerned, he got moved out of the way and tumbled. But he shouldnt have been trying to fight Martinez in the first place. Oddly enough for all the antics on the field, no punches were thrown. The only place they were tossed was in the Yankee bullpen. No Sox fans were arrested either. The victim (yes VICTIM) a Special Ed teacher with a bruised face and cleat marks on his body. I cant beleive how the national media depicted the Red Sox as villains and Garcia and Nelson get off. Note the difference in fines for Martinez and Garcia, 50k vs 10k...and Garcia is being investigated for assault!

Oh, but look at this article by NY TImes writer Dave Anderson who closed out his article on the matter almost inciting Yanks fans to toss things, batteries in particular at Pedro:

"Names or even nicknames will never hurt Martinez, but in the absence of sticks and stones, a battery might. When he's on the mound or when he warms up in the bullpen, he would be within range of any Yankees loyalist with a good arm. But if there's no Game 7, Pedro the Perpetrator will be safe.

    Until next season."

And I just want say GAWD, I LOVE SPORTS!!!!....the best reality TV ever.
