I knew was only a matter of time until Nostrodamus popped up...

    Like This Thread!
    Here's an e-mail I've just recieved:

From Nostradamus approx 500 years ago......

"In the year of the new century and nine months, From the sky will come a great King of Terror... The sky will burn at forty-five degrees. Fire approaches the great new city..."

    also....

"In the City of God there will be a great thunder, Two brothers torn apart by Chaos, while the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb" ,
"The third big war will begin when the big city is
    burning" -
    Nostradamus 1654

Although Nostradamus 's predictions for our future sound frightening he does give us some hope by telling us how this third world war will end.
He says it will end as a result of an unexpected alliance.

When those of the Northern Pole are united,
In the East will be great fear and dread...
    One day the two great leaders will be friends;
Their great powers will be seen to grow.
The New Land will be at the height of its power:
To the man of blood the number is reported.

The new land was a common term used by Nostradamus to refer to what we now call America. The countries of the northern pole could be Russia and the United States. We have recently seen the breakdown of Communism in Russia and an increasing friendship between Russia and the U.S.
    Any thoughts..?

Yhea that is kinda freaky is light of everything... The nothern pole Could also be Germany I mean if he skiped the 90's it would seem like Germany went from enemy (2 world wars plus one cold one (ok appox half of germany) to freind fast.

Plus from the Bible this kinda fits.

And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

    freaky....

I really do not hope a 3rd world war comes from this..but if it's what God had planned..then let it come on now..so it can end sooner..

course...if you read Mr. Mayhem's thread, there shouldn't be a war...

I think Nostradamus' writings are so vague and cryptic people can use them to fit ANY disaster, upto and including the president getting the sniffles.

Heck, when you make a gazillion predictions, sometime or another one of yours has gotta almost stick...

Seeing as he screwed up some of the end of the world predictions before, I'd take it with a grain of salt.

    Exactly.

Still, he predicted a new pope (forget the name) Louis XVI, and Hitler (even used a variation of his name in that prediction). So I AM kinda scared....he still got a lot of things right.

U.S. at the hight o' its power?! Hm. At least if this DOES come true I'll know when I was part of the U.S.'s greatest power...

Also, I say Russia. We got Alaska as part of our pole, and Russia has many northern islands...in the Artic Circle...and we have worked toward friendship recently.

There's no validity on Nostrodamus' predictions. For anyone that believes in his so-called predictions, I suggest checking out James Randi's book " The Mask of Nostradamus: The Prophecies of the World's Most Famous Seer". Also, you can find info on his supposed "predictions' at www.snopes.com - just do a search for his name.

    Nostradamus myth debunked aqui!

    http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/hoaxes/predict.htm

Oh, blast. Clayface beat me to it. Still, I have a more specific link.

This item is said to have been penned a hundred years after his death. Dr. Michel de Nostradame may have been guivted with precognition, but even he would have found it hard to write them, being in the grave and all.

This thread title caught my eye, since I used to post at a couple of boards under the handle "Nostradamus". Thought maybe someone who knew me from there (I was a bit of a troll in those days) turned up here at TZ....

I know the predictions sound soothing, but I think we can get that same feeling without them. We don't need them. We're just looking for absolutes, but we can find what we need in ourselves to help to end all this. Don't get me wrong, this is my first world disaster, a la something like Pearl Harbor, during which I'm an adult, so I'm scared, worried, and angry too. But we can't let that get in the way.

I saw this earlier on another board, and dismissed it immediately. I thought "The third big war will begin when the big city is
burning" looked a little added on....whoo, me!

True, it sounds scary, but I've never really believed Nostradamus before and this "prediction" just isn't specific enough to convince me to start.

I put about as much faith in Nostradamus' predictions as I put faith in Miss Cleo's predictions. Back in the early 90's or around the mid 90s or so, I recall people saying Nostradamus' predictions did not go past the year 1999. Who pulled this one out of the blue? Is anybody else here questioning whether or not the transaltions of the original language these were written in may be being interepreted rather freely?

If you start questioning translations, all kinds of things start getting iffy (most religious texts have gone through several languages...)

The ancients were wise for their time and so was Nostrodamus. I just hope that a third word war doesn't happen but since the United States of America was badly hit I'm guessing that the president might declare war when they finally start pointing fingers. Anyway, those are my opinions and they weren't ment to offend anyone.

There was a United Pentecostal church meeting in Arkansas back in the days when Bill Clinton was still govenor of the state. Bill Clinton, in a PR move I am sure, attended one of the evening camp services, and during the preacher's message that night, a message in tongues went forth, to which the interpretation was that Jesus would come back while Bill Clinton was president. Of course, nobody at that camp meeting, not even the preacher who gave that message, could know that Bill Clinton would one day be president. It's one of those stories that has gotten around, and I have even talked to people who were there and verify the message went forth. Heck, a tape of the service might even be for sale from the camp's tape ministry. But that goes to show you that you cannot put your trust in prophecies that come forth from the lips or pens of men. Remember when Nostradamus had apparently predicted California was going to fall into the ocean. Wasn't that back in the 80s? And all those people sold their houses? I wouldn't sell a donut based on his prophecies, let alone a house. And I wouldn't put much faith into the idea we will be in World War III either.

    Interpretation and hindsight

Note that all these Nostradamus "predictions" turn up after an event, like the presidential election last year (that whole thing about the village idiot come to power; note, though, no one ever said he predicted any of Clinton's shenanigans). I'd be more amazed if they turned up months before and we were able to prevent the disaster. People either take existing texts and twist them to say what they want, or will be unscrupulous and write their own, passing them off as Biblical or Nostradamus statements.
It's like saying Revelations predicts the rise of Pokemon (all the talk of dragons and fiery horses) or that Dylan predicted the Lewinsky scandal over twenty years ago. Well, note the second stanza of "No Time to Think", 1978--

I haven't been able to hear that song the same way since....
