    (off-topic) Today's SF Link

some images of the houses are poor, and the writer doesn't seem to understand that 'Queen Anne' and 'Victorian' are mutually exclusive, but some cool links.

    enjoy!

Neat houses....would like to visit San Francisco someday (living there'd be too astronomically expensive, and I wonder if it's still recovering from being "dot-com"-ed to death :-)

Yeah, great houses! I enjoyed the link a lot. One has to wonder how anyone can afford to life in San Fransisco, though. I once heard that it's the most expensive place in the United States to live in, but it looks cool, just as long as there aren't any street clowns... I'd like to see a picture of that huge Moorish looking house, it's reddish, and really, really big!

    now for the bad news:

yes, the cost-of-living is outrageous - for highest, there is usually a close race involving Manhatten, Honolulu, and SF.

no, the local economy is still in the toilet following its over-indulgences in the 'high-tech' 'new economy' (yeah, I'm going to pay $106/share for Amazon, which has NEVER shown a profit.)

Let's see if we can get this under the radar:
www.f**k*dcompany.com - follow the latest crashes

on the plus side, we do have strong rent-control, which protects renters from blatent gouging, But - there's only about 49 sq. miles of SF, and we are no longer building more (another story)

    Jack -

I think you are thinking of the Palace of Fine Arts - the lone survivor of the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition (read: World's Fair)

is this what you're thinking of?

Sorry for the late reply, but try as I might, I couldn't find a picture of the house (it isn't the Palace of Fine Arts). It's actually a really big, boxy house. I think it has onion domes too, but I may be confusing it with another house. I last saw it in a Victorian architecture book. It was described as "Exotic Revival."

    I did find this, though:

Well, yes, the picture contributes much to the discussion

Onion domes: can only remember these on Ukranian and Russian Orthodox churches

for brown sandstone, 2-story, with lots of grass aroung, there is a RR tycoon's mansion (Crocker, I think - not at all certain) on top of nob hill

otherwise, GET ME A FLIPPIN' PIC!

Okay, so maybe they weren't onion domes, but I think the bottom one is it. It looked better in the book (IMO), the colors were better... I was confusing it with a green house (but I'm not even going to start looking for a picture of that one).

Have no idea where that one is... But - aside from the color scheme, it is not all that remarkable (local standards).
