    College Questions

    Like This Thread!
I'm heading into my Senior year next year, so that means that also next year I'm heading into college. But I have tons of questions... some stupid little stuff and some important. I'm starting with the stupid stuff.

I have a floor model TV in my room. Would I be able to bring it along ?

Keeping with the TV question... Would it be possible to have cable hooked into my room ?

Are the rooms already furnished ? Or will I have to bring along my mini-fridge, and other accesories like my computer ? I heard that
some colleges don't allow comupters because they want you to use the computer lab, speaking of that.... Would I be able to get the net hooked into my room as well ?

Now for a more serious question... Does it matter what college you go to, when it's time to get a job I mean ? My mom tells me that they look at your rank and grades but don't take into account that your college(fellow classmates basicly) sucked. Because I can get into a lot of colleges on my ACT Score alone, some It said I'd be ranked at the Top 10 Percent and another I'd be ranked in the middle, and one said the bottom.

And I'm going to try to base my decison on colleges on what Internships are open. Speaking of Internships, what's a sure fire way to snag a job directly after your internship ends? With my Major and Minor Internships are very important. (Graphic Design and Marketing/Advertisement.)

Feel free to answer the questions that you can answer.

Depends how big your dorm room is going to be.

Keeping with the TV question... Would it be possible to have cable hooked into my room ?
At my school, they have a cable package where eveyrone with a tv can hook up to. I'd imagine that most colleges, and at the least the bigger ones, do have a cable package you can hook up to. But I think you'd have to take what they offer and couldn't get a different package unless you lived off campus.

Are the rooms already furnished ? Or will I have to bring along my mini-fridge, and other accesories like my computer ? I heard that some colleges don't allow comupters because they want you to use the computer lab, speaking of that.... Would I be able to get the net hooked into my room as well ?
The rooms probably come with a bureau, beds, but you'll probably have to bring most stuff. Definitely bring a mini-fridge. Definitely bring a computer. I haven't heard of any colleges that don't allow computers. Any college that enforces a rule like that or doesn't have a high speed connection directly to your room isn't worth your time and $.

The last two questions, I'm not really sure of because I haven't gone out into the job world yet. But my theory is that yes, name brand matters. Not necessarily because you get a better education at one college compared to another, but just because people are obsessed with "name brand value." But honestly, I don't really know. I could be totally wrong about that one.

    Hope that helps.

Failure is pretty much on the money with those responses.

With the job thing, name matters to an extent. You should know how good the college you attend is at whatever you want to do. For undergraduates, it doesn't really matter because most schools teach the same thing. However, another thing you might want to look into is the area around your school, because that's where you would probably get your first job related to your major.

You have time, man. Use it wisely.

    Later.

And if Failure's reponses didn't help, it would really be best to ask the college those questions. Like if you have five college's you think you might want to go to, just go to their sites on the web and send them emails. They'll always be glad to help out. For a general education, just about every college is the same. A Cal State is as good, sometimes better than a college or University, heck, sometimes Jr. Colleges are better. But when you're going for a specific major, let's say in accounting, then it's very important you find the best school for you that has a good reputation in that area. A school may have a horrible theater department, but if it's one of the best school's in the state or country for accounting, then that's where you want to be. When you're sending out your resume, where you went to school is going to matter a good deal. A business may see where you went, and how no idea whether it's a good school or not, and they'll be doubtful. And if they saw another resume that had listed a school they are very familiar with and praise, they'll take that applicant over you very quickly. Right now though, since you haven't even begun to start your senior year is to 1) RELAX, don't stress yourself out now with all this college stuff, 2) don't slack off in school, have fun, but keep the grades up, 3)start looking at college's that interest you 4)ask your parents and your teachers/student advisor for advice on schools, it can be very helpful!

Here's one last tip, just to elaborate and clarify a bit of what I said earlier.

Go with what you want, go with your heart. There's no point in going to a big shot name brand school if you're miserable and just going through the motions. Regardless of where you go, if you do well, you will be noticed.

Where are the questions about booze and babes? That's all I ever did in college. Let me answer one of your questions. Yes it matters what school you go to. Do you want to party or play chess?

Heh... I'm not so much worried about that stuff. One of the Colleges I applied to FAM U, is a so called party college.

And another University of Tennesee, has some of the most gorgeous girls I've EVER seen. I figure it like this, EVERY school is going to have hot chicks and I don't drink so that nixes that.

I hadn't even considered girls as a list of my worries or concerns, I'm going to visit a few campuses during the summer after I earn enough with my job..So i'll see for myself what they'll have to offer, in the female department.

a university is a university. but it really depends on what you want to study. one college, lets say UC Berkeley (a very fine school) would better suit anyone attemping to gain a degree in a major science (bio, chemistry, ect) rather than an art (graphic, fine arts, ect).

just dont go to specialty schools. they may teach you some stuff, but it doesnt look great on applications. for example, a job interview:

boss guy: so, whered you get your training/degree?
you: <name of a specialty school advertised on TV.>
boss guy: ah, i see. well thats all mr. sanders, we'll be in touch.
    ...and voila, youre still jobless.

your best bet: go see your school counselor. ask for a list of colleges that have good graphic arts programs. and keep your mind open.
I'm not living, I'm just killing time.
