    Halloween Costume Prep Thread 2010

    Like This Thread!
Technically, I've never done one of these any other year, but it may make for a nice tradition.

So...who is prepping their Halloween costume? Scouring the second-hand stores? Sketching ideas? Or procrastinating?

I'm going to be Chun Li. It's the cheapest thing I can go as seeing as how I already own a blue qipao. Sure the design isn't going to be accurate (and my boots will be black instead of white) but all I need to get is a pair of leggings and some white fabric to fashion a belt and hair things.

Not much preparation here. I think I'll just throw on my Marty McFly costume again this year.

Though I'll have to buy a new denim jacket, as I've since gotten rid of that one because it was a little too big.

I almost want to say: unscrew the wheels and glue the board to your shoe for the ultimate hoverboard illusion. At least as far as standing on it with one foot.

I'm making one based on the suits worn by the heroes of the 1982 Disney Sci-Fi flick "Tron."

It lights up too, I didn't take pictures of it lit. I did take a video I will upload on Youtube. The mechanism of lighting it up is called EL or electro-luminescent wire. It's a wire that glows when you apply current to it. I will be painting some circuit patterns using fabric paint.

I'mmm.... procrastinating. A little. I need to hit the thrift stores. I'm doing a vampire LARP this year as a cowgirl vampire slayer... which mostly means I get to wear plaid, a cowboy hat and a black trench coat, wield a foam sword and speak with a heavy southern accent. Good times, good times! XD

First up - that wire is SO COOL! Thanks for telling me about it. A friend and I were discussing how one could have "light up" elements in a costume and we both drew a blank. Aren't you afraid of catching fire or anything, though?

Michael24, nice Marty outfit. Never seen one, and it makes perfect sense. Very 80s chique.

I love the idea of Chun Lee! She was my favourite character in Street Fighter 2. Always made her jump around.

Now...a vampire LARP is not an expression I'm familiar with. Details please!

I'm trying to help a friend find some cheapy rubber snakes for a costume, and am having a heck of a time. When did Dollarstores stop carrying all the cheapy kid's toys? Yeesh.

LARP: Live Action Role Play. I've never actually done one before so this should be interesting. Especially since I'm the only vampire slayer in the bunch, and almost everyone else is being angsty/sparkly vampires. BWA HA HA HA HA! (or they were, last I heard).

There's gonna be a scavenger hunt element, and I basically get to run around doing mafia type hits and possibly accepting bribes in the form of scavenger hunt items.

I originally made it to wear to San Diego ComicCon in 2006. The hard part was finding the right kind of shoes, but Nike offers (or at least did at the time; I haven't checked since) a customization service through their website, so for $90 I was able to basically recreate Marty's 1984 Nike Bruins. I also found the exact same model watch, as Casio is still making it all these years later.

No it is Electro-Luminescent Wire, ti doesn't burn hot and uses a battery powered inverter. This is the site that has information and sells EL http://thatscoolwire.com/

It would be awesome if you had two little kids to dress up as Billy and Mandy along with it.

Well, I decided to prepare my first Cosplay for Daishocon in Novemember. I decided to go as Hastur, the Unspeakable One. I managed to get a few good images off the internet, as well as some suggestions.

However, since I'm still waiting for payday, I'll have to wait til then before gathering supplies. Halloween is the best time of the year to do this.

I'm attempting a homemade Darkwing Duck costume - without the actual duck parts of course. Just the jacket, turtleneck, cape, mask and hat. And my toy gas gun if I can still find in laying around somewhere.

Here's the jacket I'll be using. Unfortunately I couldn't find a double breasted jacket in my size so I'll have to improvise with a single breasted one and rearrange the buttons...

And the hat I'll be using...without the feather...

Finding a blue turtleneck shouldn't be too hard, and I've already got the mask. The cape will unfortunately be a compromise. I can get a purple one, but it will either be one color or have a black interior. I can't for the life of me find a purple cape with a pink interior unless I make one myself, and that's not happening.

Well, i managed to find some cheap yellow cloth from Goodwill for my Hastur costume. Oh, since some are not familar with what Hastur may look like, here:

    http://images.epilogue.net/users/megaflow/Hastur4.jpg

As you can see, I'll have some considerable license in desigining the costume. I can't spout masses of tentacles for my legs, sadly, so I'll have to make due with what I can.
