Just saw your post. I was at the river all weekend.![]()
Anyway, yeah, it's going good. I played about halfway through then got frustrated and used cheat codes. I wanted to see what happened! But now I'm going back through without cheating and still enjoying it. I like to beat a game with cheats first, because I'm so impatient, then I go through and play it legit. Being able to save at any point makes this easier than it was in the old days.
I had a question for you a few days ago, but forgot what it was. Oh, but here's another one. How all can you win? I've got the Command & Conquer mentality so just go out and start whomping on people. But from what I've read, this isn't really the point of the game.
Do you guys go for the conquer route, or peaceful advancements?

You get a lot more points for conquering the world than for the space race--and everyone thinks it's more fun, too!Originally posted by killercroc

OK you could win by defalt by being the only civ left on the planet but I find it gets boring when you distroy all the enemy cities and you now have to hunt down the remaning units (it can take a long time to find them) The other way to win is to be the first to launch a space ship into deep space this requires alot of production. As for me I tend to explore first and try not to get into any drawn out wars then once I have a footing I get some breathing room and push back any civs in my way then go for the space ship while distracting the enemy with skirmishes along their boarders hoping to get them to waste their resorces attacking me while I just defend my self and use most of my resorces for the space ship.Originally posted by killercroc

OK, not everyone goes the war-like route.Originally posted by Psycho Fox

But Psycho Fox is certainly right that most of the game (unless you want to play at being a hyper-destructive Genghis Khan) consists in playing defensively while pouring your resources into development of some kind.
I guess I differ from PF's strategy only in my ultimate goal. Instead of going for the spaceship, I steer my energies into building a solid technological lead and powerful industrial base before turning my legions loose on the other civs (who by that point typically have launched their own wars against me).

I've done the war bit my self but on a big map finding those straglers after you distroy their civilization is annoying.Originally posted by Maxie Zeus

True but sometime I get caught up into a very very long war. For example one game I was playing on a big random map I had total control of my starting continent the artic region to the north of my continent and some Celt Islands to the south east. Well I got into a war with the Greeks so I could grab their peninsula that was on the north east part of their continent and faced east towards my islands. I though it would be a perfect port for my Navy. Well I captured the peninsula but the Greeks didn't want to call for peace afterwards so I got draged into a very long war. After the peninsula the Greeks had their cities packed in very tight making advancement difficult I slowly made my way about a quarter of the way down the East coast before being totaly stoped by their armies. It was a bloody stale mate for turns it wasn't until I discovered fighters that I was able to advance again even then it was slow and I took many casualties. I gambled on a bold move and took my remaing armor and artillery units on the field and push them west to meet up with my allies the Zulu while my infintry with the aid of fighters, bombers and missiles from my navel ships held my positions on the east coast. It worked once I meet up with the Zulus. It worked, I was able to shoot south and divide the Greek forces and quickly mop them up. But one Engineers sliped by my armies and made a dash to the southern artic circle. The war took countless turns but it was worth it my empire grow more then 5 times its size and I took down a empire that war originally stronger them me. Then tragedy stuck the Zulus got the knowledge of Nukes via taking the North Western Greek cities. I Decided to take them on and I was able to kick them off the Greek continent quickly but when I went to their island I found it heavly defended. Even near the end when I launched my ship I could not advance very far into their island even though I had a way bigger army, they were just too heavily defended.

Yhea but those stragglers can be a pain to find

If you want strategy tips I think IR and PF and I would be happy to share them. Though maybe the mods would prefer it if we shared them via email.
Cool sounding war you had going.
Typically I carve out a nice little niche for myself and play nicely with the other civs. I don't like starting wars; too often the other civ will cock a snoot like the Greeks did with you and not adjust to the new reality. So I just play in my own corner until I'm way far ahead of them tech- and power-wise. By then I don't have to start anything: They gang up and attack me, but then it's usually too late for them. Mwa-ha-ha!
You're right, stragglers are tough, but that's what the Apollo project is for. If I can wipe out a civ's main country, I can afford to ignore the scattered colonies while focusing on other enemies. Then when all the others are shattered I build the Apollo Project and send expeditionary forces to mop up the remnants.
BTW, do you find that allies are helpful? I avoid alliances, even when proffered. The AI is lousy at battlefield tactics, so my allies never help in the actual war, and too often drag me into fights I don't want to get into.
Hey I didn't know there where so many Civ fans.
Anyway I usually try and take over at least 1 Civ within the first hour (or at least dominate a good percentage of my map.) Weird thing is that by the time the games over 've taken about 2 or 3 Civ's down (or really weakened them.) So everyone's signing alliances against me. I have to really step carefully in this situation.
So, which wonders do you guys tend to go for. I like the Great Wall (if I'm on an island with little contact this takes 2nd place to more economic stuff,) the great Library, and Leo's workshop personally. The others are nice as well but early on I concentrate on those ones.
BTW Did anyone notice that Sid Meir and Co released a game called Alpha Centauri, and that you can beat Civ by going to Alpha Centauri? Are they tied together, coincidence? I think not.
Yhea but beating up other nations make your empire grow faster and the faster you do it the bigger it would be by the end.Originally posted by Maxie Zeus

Yhea there were games where I had to chase a single unit all over the world to win

Well the problem I had was that their citys where in land and bunched together making it hard for my weak units. The Zulu gave the Greeks a new front so some of their forces went towards them instead of me but as I said they go the secret of the nuke so in the long run they were not worth it.

It does, but I hate running huge, unwieldy empires. Give me 12 to 15 cities and I can handle it. Anything more than that and it gets to be a hassle. (One thing I really liked about "Call to Power" was the build queue.) When I do the conquer thing I typically just let the new cities cycle thru building defensive units.Originally posted by Psycho Fox

Wonders: Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Statue of Liberty, Adam Smith, and Hoover Dam. Everything else is just icing.
Pyramids, huh. I know that's one way of classifying Civ players, whether they go for fast city growth (Pyramids or granaries) or slow growth. I'm a slow growth player, and will actually avoid conquering any city with the Pyramids in it (at least, until I have lots of happiness-producing wonders.)
I got a kickass method that I bet would have worked with the Greeks (and no, it does not involve nukes). Lemme know the next time you're in that situation and I'll email you.
I'll put this in a separate post, cuz I really don't want it lost.
I'm betting everyone plays it on a PC. If anyone does play it on a Mac (which I do), PLEASE let me know. I'd love to swap maps or scenarios.
See I like to win with industrial strength which means big cities lots of cities. Yhea getting tech first is a biggie but I have swarmed tanks with rifle men and won plus you need real industrial strength to build the space shipOriginally posted by Maxie Zeus

Come on what is it. I didn't have much breathing room then I was also slaughtering the Celts & British (Hey it was one long war) plus those bastards eventually put subs along the path of my troop ships meaning some of my repacements went right to the bottom of the sea. Oh yes then there was the fact they had me surrounded on my outpost cities I lost and recaptured them countless times I did this since I knew they had the power to easily reach my major cities if I didn't bring the fighting to them.I got a kickass method that I bet would have worked with the Greeks (and no, it does not involve nukes).
