Exercise + Diet = Weight Loss?

    Like This Thread!
So. Has anyone here actually tried any diets, and have seen produced results, themselves? I am trying to lose weight, obviously. Right now I am taking on the "Fat Loss for Idiots" guide, which a lot of people have thus far reccomended, but has anyone done anything else? I am also trying to speed up my metabolism by running 2 miles everyday. I am also a swimmer, so my metabolism itself should be rather high by now, but yeah.

    Suggestions?

Edit: Oops, I misspelled Exercise, could a mod fix that?

I started off on Southbeach but I've sorta drifted off of that into a weird mismash of high-fiber, low fat, controlled salt (trying not to exceed 100% rec DV can be surprising hard), calorie restricted diet. I also eat more often but in smaller servings. It seems to work for me with my exercises.

I have never held a diet for more than a day. Not even a day.
All I can tell you is just to keep exercising right and eating good foods. Most diet programs on TV don't work, and the only way to really loose weight is to keep control over what you do and maintain a healthy life style.

Hmm. Well I just spent 55 dollars for this program, it is an 11 day program, and I shall be starting it tomorrow, and every website I went to about weight loss had this on their top 5, so...I am gonna keep with this one! You are supposed to lose 5-9lbs every 11 days with a 3 day grace period.

Say what you will about it, the Atkins diet worked beautifully for me. I followed it faithfully for about 4-5 months until I reached my desired weight, and was able to maintain very easily and comfortably at that point by just settling into a decent lifestyle of little junk, moderate exercise, and lots of fruits, veggies, and water.

Of course, then emotional turmoil hit and I said "screw this, for one week I deserve to eat all the junk food I want"... and that one week lasted for several months and here I am, planning to start all over... Really, though, for all the junk I've been eating it's only recently begun catching up to me, so for all the "you gain it all back right away" arguments people throw around, I'm not seeing it.

Any links that expand upon this diet? I'm curious.

Since diets are being discussed here, I believe as weight is reduced so is the appetite for food. Does weight loss also reduce thirstyness?

Do what I did. Subscribe to a gym, find a class or routine you LIKE and can attend periodically and stick to it. It's the best way to lose weight because you're actually enjoying losing it. In the past three years I lost 15 pounds and I'm now staying in my ideal weight.

Diets don't work for me, but I can assure you that you can lose weight without one if you exercise properly. It worked for me, and I'm a guy that eats junk food about twice every week.

And in case you're wondering, the classes I take are Body Combat and Body Attack from the Les Mills exercise system.

Yeah, I am going to join the YMCA once I can drive, which will be at the end of the summer. For now I am just going to try a diet and prepare myself, I am also, like I said, running everyday.

Hmm. I am not sure about that, but my diet guide says to drink 10 bottles of water a day, at the very least, so I am assuming not.

Diets have never worked for me. I've tried so many and had little to no results, and it gets to be such a pain that I give up eventually. When I want to lose weight, food isn't the issue. Exercise, on the other hand, is amazing, if I do it regularly and enough, I can see results. And it doesn't even have to be traditional exercising, just as long as my body is in motion and pushing itself. I've been walking, cleaning, and hell, even babysitting a lot this summer and during spring, and it's definitely noticeable that I've lost weight since winter and last fall.

So yeah, I mean, it definitely varies from person to person. If you know that different foods or eating habits does work for you, then go with that, or if you're like me, just boost up your actions. Don't force it on yourself, though. Make this more of a hobby than an obsession. Because if you're worrying about the fact that you aren't losing weight, you'll just stress yourself out, and that'll hurt ya more than eating junk food might. xD

Yeah, that is very true. I really don't want to be caught up in all of this to that point. It also doesn't help that I work at a Fast Food place, but we do offer sides of fruit only and salads, so I believe I will stick to those when I am there.

All the diet advice anybody needs is to eat less and excercise more. I lost 20 pounds in a couple of months by just going to the gym and doing some cardiovascular excercise and very light weight training and determining what my daily caloric intake should be to maintain my weight and cutting about 500-700 calories out of it. One could make less extreme cuts and lose weight more gradually.

The most important thing to remember is, don't live like a fat person. Get up off the couch. If you can't go to the gym, just go for a walk or a run or play a sport. Stop supersizing and in fact save fast food for an occasional treat. Eat regular meals with small portions. Be aware of your caloric intake. And work out with weights if you can, because muscle takes more energy to maintain than fat. And realize that you probably won't lose weight that fast. My first week of dieting I lost eight pounds because my previous habits had been so bad, but the weeks after that it was usually only about two or three, and I was doing quite well relative to many people.

I'm fat again, but it's only because I got lazy and stopped doing those things. It does take long-term comittment.

I'm sorry, but Atkins is just bad for you. You do lose weight, but it's because it makes you sick and makes your body start eating itself. Most people rebound when they go back to their old habits.
    And stay out of Riverdale!

I can never stay on an ongoing diet. What has usually worked for me is eating less junk, and eating less when I'm bored in general. I like running on the treadmill and swimming the best as excercise.

That's what gets me. Everytime im bored I just eat, and even though my metabolism is fast now and it hasn't really affected me, I know as I get older it's going to come back around and bite me.

    ...

I usually fluctuate from 170-180, but yeah, basic exercise and eating better are the logical weight loss plan. Cut back on sweets, walk a little more, etc.

This site is full of lies. Sorry to be the one to say it. It basically says you don't have to excercise or cut back your caloric intake to lose weight, even though it's pretty much impossible to lose weight without doing so. I think they call it fat loss for idiots in a sneering, derogatory way, because they think that's what their customers must be to buy this stuff. Generally you should mistrust anybody trying to sell you something that should be easy to figure out for yourself or that offers an "easy way out."

I stay at a constant 150-153lbs. I watch what I eat, and keep count on all the Fat, carbohydrates and protein I ingest. I also keep on a schedule of exercise. Around the neighborhood jogging, put in some time on DDR as well, though it doesn't help nearly as much. and basic workouts.
I should put something here. I don't know what though.

Heh. I've never had a weight loss problem. Rather, I need to gain weight without killing my arteries in the process.

The best thing is exercise and diet. Stop shoving food in your mouth. You can eat what you want, but you have to be mindful of how much. You could theoretically diet on McDonalds if you had to via caloric restrictions, but it would likely kill your pipes thanks to the fats and cholesterol. Portion control is key. Put down the second Twinkee.

Supplements are only as good as you take them -- which is a lot of money. Dietwise, stop eating fast food and try to get more organics into your diet. Preservatives, salts, sugars, and artificial stuff all add up to a tubbier you. That said, read the labels on the salads at your restaurant before ingesting; they should not have 400+ calories in 'em. They end up like that thanks to "extras" and the preservatives that are used to make them look nice and green.

Believe it or not, a recent study found that gardening, due to the variety of movement, is better than a gym. If you're already a lazy person, then there's no amount of "get up and go" that will make you venture out to the gym just to do more work. However, if you're charged with physically demanding chores that you need to do, then the exercise is more conquerable.

In their 10 rules it states that you have to exercise twice a day for 30 minutes, whether it be biking, running, swimming, etc. I dunno, maybe it doesn't work, but it doesn't hurt to give it a try.

Edit: And I am just going with it because this came up a lot for one of the better guides.

Well, I can't say I'm surprised. Chores such as gardening certainly do require quite a bit of excercising. It's also a form of excecise that would be done more likely than going to a gym or playing sports because chores are something that have to be done, while just plain excercising is only done for the sake of physical activity.
