Broke my toe

Like This Thread!
I just need somewhere to whine and complain about this. I dropped a hammer on my foot today and I broke my fourth toe on my right foot. It's all swollen and bruised and I can't even touch it or walk right because it hurts so bad!!

poor you , i know how ya feel, i dropped a big tv on my toe when i was about 10.. the tele was on a very unstable stand and i was trying to turn it around coz it was on an angle when the stand fell over and the tv landed on my big toe. it hurt LOADS! it was swollen in seconds and turned black. i couldnt move it or walk on it or touch it, it was months before it was properly healed. i never went to the doctors or hospital though coz im terrified of them so just let it heal on its own which it did, but i still get pain from it sometimes, 7 years later. there was a bright side though, i got outta P.E lessons for 2 whole months (okkay, i'll stop now, im rambling)

anyways, hope ya toe heals soon, just keep some ice on it (or a bag of frozen peas like i had :P) and it should ease the pain and bring down the swelling.

Or do the smart thing and go to the doctor so they can X-Ray it and see if the bone needs to be put in place, or it will never heal properly and you might not walk the same way again.

For the future... I'd recommend steel-toed footwear. Definitely.

I broke mine a few months ago, and it hurt like crazy. Going to the doctor was a waste of time, all they did was tell me what I already knew and taped it to my other toe. It hurt to walk for about a week. Oh, I broke because I stubbed it while running around in my bare feet. And by stubbed, I completely knocked the couch I stubbed it on foward a few feet because I was running so fast. Now, I walk around my house wearing shoes, and I certainly don't run anymore.

You are lucky, what would have happaned if you didn't go to a doctor and your bone was out of place, or the joint was not right? You ALWAYS have to go to the doctor.

If it's too hot to wear protective footwear, you shouldn't be doing anything that puts your toes at risk... or else, you risk the consequences!

Unless you live in a region where all the doctors are collectively known as "population control"... then it doesn't do you much good.

I have never worked in construction before, yet I managed to drop things on my feet some times. Heck, I might walk out of my building and my toes could be at risk from a falling brick, but I still won't subject myself to "protective footwear" .

See, you don't live at my home, either. There, protective footwear is necessity. You never know when someone's gonna want you to move massive cast iron stoves or other stupidly heavy things at the drop of a hat... just to move it back, later. Really, I don't get it. Anyway, my steel-toed footwear has been... toe-saving.

I'm workin' on that, believe me.

Where exactly do you live? No need for specific address of cource, just curious.:anime: Seems like a small out of the way place. How many cast iron stoves (or other heavy objects) fell on your toes? Can you realy lift a cast iron stove by yourself?

I've been icing it on and off for a while with a bag of frozen corn in my case.

I had my neighbor (He's a pediatrician) take a look at it. He said it was pretty obviously broken from the swelling and bruising but that it wasn't dislocated so he taped it for me.

Well I was walking barefoot around the house when I noticed a loose nail from a picture I had taken down was still on the wall. Not thinking about it really, I just grabbed the hammer and started pulling the nail out. It was in a stud though so it was really stuck in. The hammer lost it's hold on the nail while I was pulling and it came back with such force that I lost my balance and dropped the hammer. It came down right on my toe. Anyway, I never expected to be doing any big construction job so I didn't think about protective footwear. In retrospect, I wish I had. It would've saved me the five minutes I spent on the floor, crying and holding my foot as I watched my toe swell up twice it's size and I wouldn't be stuck here now with a broken bone.

And what about those hot summer days.
I live in Texas. It's always hot summer days! I don't think I actually have any steel toed boots to be honest. I always wear sneakers when I'm out, always sans socks because of the heat, and when I get home, the first thing I do is peel off my shoes.

Few people have steel toed shoes, specially at home. I generally think of somepiece or other of safety gear after it would have helped
Kept thinking if I'd had a pair of high top hiking boots instead of sneakers, I wouldn't have sprained my ankle tripping over that log,,, the whole four miles I hobbled to get back. (Also would be better if I didn't hike alone )

You never realize how important toes are to walking till one's broken/damaged.
I haven't broken one yet but I bruised one really bad just dropping a small board.

Hurting or even breaking your toe sucks really bad! When I used to take Tae Kwon Do a few years ago, our classmates had to practice kicking the padded post. One day, I made an awkward kick on the post and my foot retracted down hard on the solid base. My toe swelled up with pain and I had trouble walking for three days.
