The "What Would You Take to a Desert Island?" Thread

    Like This Thread!
Inspired by Style 92's "What food would you be willing to be trapped with forever?" thread (and not the first time I've ripped him off), I thought it'd be interesting to ask folks around here what other items they'd bring with them to a desert island. Let's say you were being dropped on an island with the option of choosing one, and only one, item from each category... what would you decide to bring?

Here's a few categories to get folks started...

    Movie?
    Book/comic book?
    Album?
    Videogame?
    Person?
Modern Amenity (toilet, shower, air conditioning, etc.)?*
    Beverage?
    Personal Memento?

Feel free to toss in any categories of your own!

*Don't be cheap and say internet or telephone access.
"So pray for peace until you're hoarse, and maybe fear will run its course.
May God forgive us our insanity, and we'll keep pressing on."

I'm not following your ridiculous categories. What I would bring would be an inflatable raft, an air pump, a signal flare, a handgun, a rope, a thousand dollars in money or valuables, steroids, bandages, alcohol, ointment, a Powerade filled thermos backpack, spare batteries and a cell phone.

Movie: Lord of the Rings! Hours of fun! I suppose if I had to pick only one of the movies (though that's not fair) I'd probably pick Fellowship.
Book/comic book? Hrmm, hard one. I wouldn't want to take something I hadn't read before, 'cause what if it sucks? So I'm going with something friendly: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Album? Any chance I could make a mix CD before leaving? Oh fine, I'd probably bring Making Beds in a Burning House by Troubled Hubble.
Videogame? Something that's hard to beat, but not too hard that I want to stop playing
Person? I would end up getting sick of whoever I take after two days. And who's to say they'd be willing to go with? So yeah, I'm undecided on that one.
Modern Amenity (toilet, shower, air conditioning, etc.)? Is a generator allowed? Or how about some form of solar powered lighting... yeah, that'll work.
Beverage? A lifetime supply of Mountain Dew.
Personal Memento? Probably a journal or a photo album.

What he said. The point of "desert island" questions is not to brainstorm the logistics of actually getting off the island, but to meditate on what wordly things are of the most long-lasting value to you. The focus isn't on escape scenarios but is instead just a device to discuss various personal favorites.

In other words, it's a thinly-veiled "get to know your fellow posters" thread.

    Movie?
Garden State. Or Black Hawk Down. I'd have to flip a coin just before I left. They're the only movies that I could (and sometimes do) watch repeatedly but never seem to get tired of in any way.

No no, Garden State is something everyone can enjoy. Not everyone likes a good war movie.

    Book/comic book?
Ender's Game. I miss that little kid.

    Album?
This is the impossiblist choice in the world. I can't do it.

    Videogame?
Rise of Nations. With the Expansion, the name of which escapes me at the moment.

    Person?
No great love in my life. I'd probably take my Dad, or my friend Chris. Chris likes Rise of Nations (we can play Co-Op as One Player). But he's also a jerk.
    Hm. Dad. We can fish.

Modern Amenity (toilet, shower, air conditioning, etc.)?*
I can bathe in a river. I don't mind being hot and sweaty.
But I must have a TOILET. With running water. In an insulated room. No bugs, no uncomfortable temperatures, no sign of anyone else ever having been there. Heaven.

    Beverage?
Water. Not because of the whole survival thing, I just drink a lot of water.

    Personal Memento?
My cheap not-even-Casio $9 wristwatch. I can't stand not being able to constanly check the time. I have to know, all the time.

    Adding my own:
    Food?
Pizza. I think without a stable supply of quality pizza, I might fall into a coma.
    Deadbolt that frakin' door!

Last night I killed a spider.
I think he'll never forgive me.

Movie? Either ATHF V3 or Signs. There are the only movies I won't get sick of.
    Book/comic book? Jurassic Park.
Album? Billy Joel's Greatest Hits Volume 1
    Videogame? Pokemon Ruby
Person? Anyone who knows how to crack coconuts.
Modern Amenity? A fan, if it's an island in the Carribean
    Beverage? Apple Juice
Personal Memento? My homerun baseball container. I could throw the baseball in my free time( which I'll have plenty of.)
