Why Isn't There A White American Month?

Heheheheh.... this has been TZ tradition now for a couple years, such as the "Woe as Me" thread that crops up around Valentines day.

I thought I'd just start it first.



Because then someone says, "Because every month is White American Month!"

And then it goes back and forth like that 'til it sputters out to being pointless.

Life eventually goes on.

SO... it's not a diss, but hey, it's nice to see those of my racial background get a positive spotlight.

I wanted to say it first! Guess I'll just have to channel George Costanza and work on a snappy comeback.

But on a serious note, I'd like to see more effort put into the concept of white pride. It starting to seem like America history is the story of evil white tyrants building an empire on the backs of minorities. Minorities who were saints, by the way (Because we don't want to accidentally paint a negative STEREOTYPE).

Hmmm...you know I always see scholarships for minority students, but, I don't think I've ever seen a scholarship for a white student, probably because it'd be viewed as racist...what's my point? I don't remember...

Yeah, white american month...are Italians white? What about Spanish people? I'm Italian but I can't really tell the difference between Italians and Spanish people, actually I can't tell the difference between any white people. All white people look the same to me, I mean, all black people and all Asians look the same to me too but...I think I'm just really bad with faces...

Short, overgeneralizing answer: Because white people and Asian people are rich and black people aren't, so instead of putting real thought into a solution for the inequalities present in our society bureaucracies find it easier to put up a picture of George Washington Carver on the bulletin board for four weeks a year.

Oh, and Ein, American history, for the most part, is "the story of evil white tyrants building an empire on the backs of minorities." That doesn't mean that scalping people is good, but it is the truth. At least now we've figured out how to build an empire using overseas slave labor-- that way it's so seemingly far removed we don't even have to think about it much less interact with the people who sew our shoes together on a daily basis.

...which actually isn't too far from the truth, except that people forget that there were plenty of poor white folks (what used to be called "the common man" and are now usually called "white trash") in with the oppressed.

But yeah, I'd settle for the phrase "white pride" not being automatically assumed to be racist. I may not be proud of everything white folks have done in the past, but that doesn't mean they haven't done some good stuff, too.

As a person with an actual degree in History, I would disagree with the "Most" part. As a Pennsylvanian (One of the most abolitionist states of the colonies) I am proud of the fact that so many people (White, Black, Irish, Scottish, germanic, and others) from my state fought to end slavery. (the last verse of the Battle Hymn of the republic is especially poignant when viewing the battle field at Gettysburg.)

I really hate when people imply that being white makes you an evil tyrant. (Being a white person I do take it a little personally.)

On a side note, I do find it interesting that I can claim pride in my Polish heritage, or my Irish heritage without reprisal.

Except he wasn't implying that being white makes you an evil tyrant. Only that the "evil tyrants" happen (via a confluence of factors) to have been white and that they shaped American history. Quibble with his "evil tyrant" if you wish, I personally would call them Plutocrats.

Also, in respone to your Polish/Irish Heritage, have you read the book "How the Irish Became White"? Whether you agree with it or not, it raises some interesting intellectual issues to say the least. Also, this song is interesting too.

For me, it's just the consept that "Most of american history is Tyrants building on the backs of minorities" just marginalizes the effots of every individual throughout american history that has just sought to build a better life for themselves or others.
