    Remembrance Day 2004

To all the brave soldiers who fought valiantly for their countries this past century, and to those who still fight.

    Lest We Forget.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow

Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields

    - John McCrae (1919)

Technically, Memorial Day (May 30) is the "rememberance day," whereas Veterans Day is more of an "appreciation day." Here's the official government website for Veterans Day.

Many thanks and well wishes to all the Vets out there. You've done your country proud.

Edit: anyone wanna tell me how Jennifer Love Hewitt became the Veterans Day celebrity spokesperson?

TECHNICALLY technically, you're right in terms of the US - but Remembrance Day is a proper holiday in its own right in many other countries (including, I believe, the UK, Canada, & Australia? I'm probably forgetting some). Here's a link to one of many pages about it.

And I show my ignorance once again. Sorry. The red poppies got me thinking about how people mix the two US holidays up (there's even a thing about that in the FAQ of the site I linked).

    /the more you know...

Edit: Now I feel like I got this thread off on the wrong foot. Really sorry about that. I pay my solemn respects to the fallen soldiers of the countries observing Rememberance Day today.

I shall remember the heroes who fought for all countries today, and for the ones who fought in the war that ended 85 years ago, but continues to remain in the thoughts of the world's people.

If it's the start of a Veterans Day Weekend...

That means War Movies on Cable.

http://www.amctv.com (Battle of the bulge, Green Berets, and more)

    http://abc.go.com/ (Saving Private Ryan)

http://www.starz.com/se/action/index.html (The Big Red One, Guns of Navarone)

    http://www.sho.com (Windtalkers)

(Expect them all weekend long on AMC and other classic movie networks.)

They're not 100% accurate... But as my Public History professor always said "They're interesting enough for people to get the gist of the history involved" and really from the general public (people that never even met a real soldier) that's the most you can hope for.

(For those of us who have Family in combat zones, Every day is Veterans Day.... the only thing special about today in particular is that there are some better-than-usual movies on AMC.)

I think the lay person often uses the word "soldier" to (incorrectly) refer to all branches of the military. That's what I had intented, at least. Now that you point it out, I realize the mistake in choosing words, but the sentiment was meant to go out to those in all military branches.

I know, it is commonly accepted that way. I just wanted to point it for those that didn't realize.
No big deal. I wouldn't have known if my cousin (a Marine) hadn't already pointed it out to me.

They do it a lot on the news, which made watching the news all the more aggravating during the time my cousin was deployed in Iraq. "Two soldiers killed near Falluja". Hm, do I trust that they actually were soldiers? Or do I allow the though that it could be my cousin?
Anyway, didn't mean to be rude.

I didn't take it as rude. Sorry if I came across that way. Actually, I'm glad you did point it out, so now I won't make the same mistake in the future.

So are we in agreement that neither one of us intended to offend the other, and neither one of us was offended by what the other person said?

If that's the case, this is incredible. I've never seen a misunderstanding resolved online.
    Hooray for understanding!
