    The 80s.....REDUX???

    Like This Thread!
Ok, I just saw a commercial for My Pet Monster. This was a toy from the 80s. I've also seen Shrinky Dinks commercials. We are getting the 80s back. He-Man toys, G.I.Joe toys, Autobot transformers. Man.

I mean, we first got it with the return of Lite-Brite (an amusing anecdote to that, I was looking for my old one around the same time the rerelease was advertised. Still haven't found that old one, which woulda been a great addition to the dorm room....)

My roommate and I were talking, and decided that this was cool. Now, if we see a reissue of My Buddy, then we know that THAT is truly a sign of the end times...

The Popples are in toy stores too, as was mentioned a while back at WBC. And I'm getting waves of nostalgia when I see the Snoopy Sno-Cone machine at K-Mart. The original Ninja Turtles figures are back too.

Heck, I might just buy myself another Snoopy Sno-Cone machine. I feel like havin' my own little hand-operated slushy machine in my room. I have some great memories of that thing.

The 70s were big in the 90s, and I hear Madonna started a (brief, I think) 60s trend in the 80s. It must be a 20-year thing.

No way!! They brought those back, too?? I still have my old one somewhere in the house, along with my other childhood toys. But man, it's looking like we're getting more and more 80s stuff.

I wonder if we'll see a return of those mini wrestler figurines?

OH yeah! Don't think I didn't recognize that My Pet Monster!!!!! lol! Oh the 80s were so wonderful to me, being so young at the time, and all.

Boy would it be great if they brought back "My Buddy." I loved that thing! Well, mostly the hat. There was this show on Nickelodeon, I think, set in this department store with this girl and her friend, who was a maniquin who came to life when he wore a magic red hat. But anyway, I played with the hat a little too much though, and eventually lost the damn thing.

That's about as 80s as B1's KICK BUTT RGB avatar!! Damn, I HAVE that pic....I wish I thoughta that!

I dunno. That's one of the things from my childhood that I never wanted. I had a friend who had one, and remember kicking it a few times. It was too, hmm, "Chucky-like"

You may have a contender to that throne, because I'm dressing up as a GB for Halloween. It's gonna be so kewl. All I need is a life-size Slimer to complete the ensemble.

Actually, we had a discussion a bit back on the Ninja Turtles coming back...I can't wait! TURTLE POWER!! And the best part is that the show being made for the revival is appealing primarily to the comic fans, so it's gritty and serious. Nothing like that for the Turtles.

...ah, the RGB. I remember being the biggest fan of 'em in my class. I wish I could see thier show again; The NEW Ghostbusters are too much a pale imitation of the true ones.

This whole "80's re-born" phase was expected to occur because this country is used to re-living the culture of previous decades.

You can look at movies and tv shows that came out in the 70's. "Grease","American Graffiti","Happy Days",etc...It appeared that 50's nostalgia was the way to go.

In the 80's, we saw more of a 50's-60's renaissance with films like "La Bamba","Dirty Dancing","Stand By Me"..Even old songs like "Twist and Shout"and "The Locomotion" got airplay. And there was always a TV show (Family Ties,Alf,Growing Pains) that had it's parents reminiscing about being hippies.

Then in the 90s, the 70s came back. Who woulda thought we would be seeing bellbottoms again? Let alone, fashionable? Disco songs were re-made and there were a few time-period films like "Dazed and Confused" & "Boogie Nights".

Now here we are in the 2000's, and we're already seeing signs of 80's stuff on the rise. What's Next? Apple and Commodore PC's making a comeback? Nintendo games re-made for playsations? Rock bands going back to long-hair and spandex? Gold-chain wearing rappers?

You guys have already mentioned the toy-line stuff like Ghostbusters,He-Man,Transformers,etc..I'm sure that(due to the recent tragedies) G.I. JOE will return with a vengance as well.

Everything good came out of the 80's! Heman, Ghostbusters, Ninja Turtles, The Bangles!

Makes sense that it's all coming back, new n' fresh! Mmm..smell that? It's the sweet smell of hair bands!

I totally remember that show!! I used to love that as a kid. Dammit, I have been trying to figure out what the name of it was for the longest time now. Hmm...might have to research that.

I love 80s music and always watch movies like 'The Breakfast Club', 'Pretty in Pink', 'Say Anything...', and 'Sixteen Candles'. Just as long as the hair-dos don't come back in style I think the return of the 80s is great.

I believe the name of that show was "Today's Special." I liked it too. =)

It had Jeff from Polkadot Door as the mannequin-sprung-to-life, I think. I loved that show too. And Polkadot Door (But NOT Polkadot shorts! Ick!)

Not to mention Muffy the Mouse and Sam the guard and his computer. Yup, I watched that, but I have no idea what Polkadot Door is. Maybe that is unique to Canada.

Says Oracle: Just as long as the hair-dos don't come back in style I think the return of the 80s is great.

Says Captain Caps: But I like seeing 80s hairstyles, especially on women. I say, if you accept the toys, the TV shows and the movies, you gotta accept the hair package as well. You can't just pick and choose.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I'm probably wrong.

    Sincerely,

    John "Captain Caps" Kilduff

Kinda side-note, off topic... how many of you have seen the Freakazoid episode "The Cloud"?

Okay, remember the conductor on the train? The one that said, "Schnitzel! Next stop, Schnitzel! Get off...if you dare!" Remember what he looked like? Does anyone else think he kinda looked like Sam the security guard on "Today's Special" ... ?

    Or am I just crazy?

the 80s are making a strange comeback. it makes me feel old (well, i'll know i'm really old when the 90s make a comeback, cause i guess the 90s was my decade, i was a tyke in the 80s). seriously, here in nyc there are a handful of clubs that have 80s nights, 80s music has a big cult following among the indy rockers and that whole maude crew or however youd classify those people.

and ofcourse, you got the toys of the 80s coming back. hmmm, ninja turtles toy i dont think are a comeback, i mean that was late 80s and early 90s, and the toys have been around for most of the 90s. the he-man toys, gi joe comic, my pet monster, AND, i even saw those weird monsters, i think called boggles or something, theyre like hand puppets, plus my pet monster, and i hear popples. dear god. OH, and ive been seeing mad strawberry short cake stickers and girly accessories. what the hell.

but did you notice the originals were made soo much better. oh well, i welcome it, its just kind of strange. im waiting for ripped jeans to come back!!! hell, maybe i'll restart that trend, too bad its getting too cold.
