It... *Might* be possible.. but i doubt it will ever be done...
Does anyone know if it would be possible to anamorphically enhance only certain parts of a video? In particular, I'm thinking about newer cartoons that are shot in full frame, but sometimes jump into a "matted widescreen" for a theatrical feel.
For example, In the Superman episode "Apokolips Now", the cartoon is animated fullscreen. However, during a scene where Orion relates the history of New Genesis and Apokolips, we get a matted widescreen that gives the history an epic feel.Could WB anamorphically enhance those few minutes of video, making it expand on widescreen sets, before reverting back to fullscreen?

I think thats a dumb idea. I hold to my believe that OAR is everything. And I don't think thats possible at the moment. Because you'd have to set the AR on the player and also the TV. I think the two devices don't always communicate that well in the form of settings and such. 4:3 anamorphic is a no-no as far as I'm concerned.

It might be possible if the video was cut into parts and that the widescreen part was a seperate video, but I doubt if the playback would work well because of the need to switch titles.
I agree with Bruce -- it wouldn't be possible to pull off seamlessly, at least across all players.
Warner's 2004 DVD of That's Entertainment! will use switching between 1.33:1 4x3 and 16x9 (for any wide parts).
We'll have to see how that turns out.
