They're set to be released Tuesday. And I'm getting the widescreen. The Full frame version cut out so much in the first Mummy.

Ah, so they broke pre-street, huh?
Personally, I think Mummy Returns was barely worth the five or six dollars I spent to see it at the theater. I doubt I will be buying it on DVD when it comes out. The original one was so much better.
I dunno why but I liked it. I'll be getting it becuase I know I can get a discount on it at WAL-MART, thanx to a friend who works there.

wait a second. shouldn't all DVD's by now have the option of full screen AND wide screen formats? what is with these companies that have either full screen OR wide screen? one DVD should have both formats dammit!

To do that, they would need to do flippers, or eliminate many of the bonus features from a single sided disc to accomodate both versions on the same side. Of course, given the snazzy two disc sets they have come out with for movies like Unbreakable (which are surprisingly affordable for two disc sets) I don't see why they couldn't just move those bonus features to a second disc. I guess the marketing gurus at the studios feel that people prefer one DVD with all the bonus features possible, and no flippers.Originally posted by oranthal

Personally, I think there should be one option and one option only for DVD releases, and that is that the movie or TV show should be put on the DVD in it's original filmed ratio. That would require no more "formatting to fit your TV screen."
They'll do that for the inevitable THE MUMMY RETURNS: ULTIMATE EDITION release when THE SCORPION KING comes out. Studios are now releases WIDESCREEN/FULL FRAME versions alot more now. Me, I'll stick with widescreen. And with widescreen televisions becoming the norm more and more, I wouldn't be suprise dif the FULL FRAME version becomes a thing of the past within ten years.

I'd have to disagree with studios releasing more Full Frame/Widescreen DVD now, it was done more with earlier titles such as Austin Powers, though they are double sided. I tend to not think of them as flippers since a flipper is usually reffered to as a disc that requires you to flip the disc to see the movie, like with laser disc, where half the movie is on side A and the other on Side B. With the double sided like Austin Powers each side is a complete movie in itself. About the only company I see coming out with both widescreen and full frame right now is Universal with the "Ultimate" line.
Widescreen television will surely get rid of pan & scan, I wonder though...will we see things made for full frame begin to get cropped ten years from now, so that they fill the widescreen?

Ya know..there is a DVD, by Warner Bros. that is a "flipper" so to speak. It has somthing to do with ppl in space..it's a classic...and over 3 hours long..Originally posted by Vigo Sprax

but..3 hours..and it's a naked DVD..is the flipping really necessary?
Pardon that bit of off-topic-ness..

ah...I found out what the DVD was.. "The Right Stuff"...
and back on topic..
I went to Meijer yesterday.......and guess what I saw when I entered? a Display for the mummy returns on VHS and DVD!
Out of the 200+ DVD's they had...EVERY LAST ONE was FULL SCREEN!
Man..I was ticked..maybe I'll find the Widescreen today...
Anybody else have similar problems?

You'll find the WIDESCREEN edition usually as smaller movie stores, or movies only stores. Chains like WAL-MART will usually prodominantly carry the full-frame version.

I know my local Target usually carries both the widescreen and full frame versions movies. The Costco near me only gets in the widescreen. Those two places (And sometimes K-Mart) are the only local stores I get DVD froms, so if I actually wanted Mummy Returns I've got my bases covered.

well, I dunno...my Meijer, Wal Mart, Walgreens, etc. all advertised the Mummy Returns DVD....WITH "Widescreen" written on the DVD..yet they all got Full Frame.
My bro found the Widescreen version at Best Buy...and he said they had very few of the Widescreen ones.
To me, if I have to watch full screen..the it should be a VHS. Otherwise, screw it...
It's like this:
Full Screen-VHS
Widescreen-DVD
and that's the way it SHOULD be...

Well, I am not going to get it until I can find widescreen! Even if it means paying more money at Suncoast, who will definitely have the widescreen.

i would have to disagree. VHS should also have the option of widescreen or full screen.

Widescreen should be the ONLY format for both VHS and DVD. Who ever decided that full frame was the "Standard" version? That makes it sound like that is the way the movie is SUPPOSED to look. I think the "standard" version should be the version that is presented in the way the movie was shown in the theater.
Well...it was the Standard aspect before films went widescreen and it still is the standard for the TV screen. Whats even more ironic than the term "standard" is "full frame", well....technically you cut off part of the frame...so how is that full?Originally posted by calhoun07
