Star Wars DVD Stuff
Well, www.davisdvd.com, www.dvdsewer.com, and www.thedigitalbits.com have done extensive coverage in the recent Star Wars DVD press get togethor last weekend at the Lucas Ranch...and everything sounds real good. I suggest you head tot he sites I listed above and go through the news. This looks to be an amazing disc, one that may even top my favorite AND actually make me like the movie!
The coverage is amazing and the screenshots and menu scenes look great.
Plus the DVD news on Ep. 2 and Ep. 3 is good for fans! The original trilogy is hitting in 2006 as apart of a 3 movie set or 6 movie set.
Go check the news!!

And the original Trilogy won't appear on DVD until after Episodes II and III are complete. The reason is that Lucas needs more time to create special edition materials for those discs (his staff didn't really start documenting the productions until Episode I). And there have been all kinds of rumors that Lucas plans to shoot and add still more scenes to Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi before he releases them on DVD
Thats nice that they are putting all this hard work into the special editions for these movies, but I sitll cannot understand why he just doesn't give us the original cuts of the movies on DVD with miminal or no features. Hell, I'd pick them up at ten to twenty bucks a shot, and Lucas would make money in the process, and I STILL would buy this box set in 2006.
I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter.

DVD extras would be invaluable to the original trilogy, Perhaps by the time they come out technology will allow us to pick and choose which special scenes we keep and which we don't.
Say good bye to the new Greedo scene.. keep the relevant Jabba scene... remove the new Han-running-down-the-corridor-scene....... etc

I agree with the Greedo scene...Han needs to shoot first, no question about it. That's who he is, that's his character. I despise Lucas for trying to change him.

From the sounds of these features, this might actually redeem the flim itself.
That's my opnion anyways.

You know, its funny. I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan. I love those movies. But I don't get the whole Greedo-scene-change-hatred thing that so many people have. To be honest, I never noticed if Greedo or Han shot first back when the movie originally came out. And I never noticed that they changed it to Greedo shooting first in the SPecial Editions, until somone pointed it out to me - after I had seen the Special Editions. That point never made any difference to me, and never, ever had anything to do with who Han was as a character. I thought it was stupid that Lucas changed it, and even more stupid that people got so upset over the change (no offense). I just don't get it.

Han shooting first shows that he's more of a scoundrel, a person who's more rutheless. Also, it puts him on the offensive, and Lucas' change makes him reactionary, perhaps a cleaner character, and on the defensive. And there is a big difference between offensive and defensive. I don't want to think of Han as a reactionary character. He knows who he is, he knows what he needs to do, and he knows how to act before he's given a chance to react.

Well, I could understand that, if that scene really did anything at all change to his character - but I'm saying that for me, it doesn't. I don't read that much into his character from that one tiny little moment - he's still the same guy - there are gonna be times when he goes on the offensive, and times when he has to be defensive. I felt that either way - him shooting first, or Greedo shooting first - really doesn't do a dang thing to change his character. Seems like people are reading WAY too much into that one moment.

If this scene was in Empire or later in the first movie, I'd be inclined to agree, but when it's the introduction to a character, I think the fans have every right to read as much as possible into that introduction. The introduction of the caracter is so important in any movie.

But I'm saying this scene doesn't do anything to destroy that scoundrel image. There's so much else in the movie that points this out - that was just one little moment. Like I said, I enever even noticed after how many years, who shot first until someone pointed it out. Yet, I always thought of Han as the scoundrel. I don't think changing that one thing does nay harm to that image at all. This wasn't the only scene that set him up as the scoundrel, nor was it, IMO, the defining scene of his "scoundrelness". IMO, its just not at all important - thus my comment that people are reading far too much into it. Remove the scene completely from the movie, and he still comes across as the scoundrel - I just don't see the big deal abotu the change.
