Hot Topic #3: Dream Special Editions

There are several movies I see are still available only on VHS that I would love to see come to DVD as special editions, with loaded extras. And there are also currently available titles on DVD that I refuse to buy until they are done right and put out on special edition DVD.

Are there any titles you are pining for? I can predict most of your answers, as all of us would vote for the Back to the Future sets or Indiana Jones, but how about some more obscure titles? The ones that are never talked about in the DVD fan forums on other boards? And what, if any, special bonus features would you like to see included on this disc?

I will go first, of course!

Leap of Faith is a personal favorite of mine that I have seen several times on DVD that I am truly hoping will get put on DVD soon. The Steve Martin movie about an evangelist who gets to see more of God than he bargained for is based on real life evangelist Benny Hinn. And I think it makes a great movie. As for special features, commentary would be great with the actors and director, and I'd like to see any deleted footage there might be, TV spots with Steve Martin on talk shows talking about the movie, and perhaps a documentary about real life evangelists.

Accidental Tourist, with William Hurt and Geena Davis is another all time favorite of mine and is sorely missed on DVD. A true modern classic, this one needs to be seen again on DVD. Commentary, deleted scenes, and I'd also like to see something on the DVD about the book upon which the movie was based.

Lost Highway, Fire Walk with Me, Eraserhead, and any other David Lynch movie not yet currently on DVD in region one and in widescreen. And Blue Velvet and Straight Story need to be re-released with special editions. We need to have a version of Straight Story at least with the same bonus features as the Japanese edition.


I am sure I will think of more as the thread goes on, but those are the main ones I'd put down good money for.

Well, definitely the Batman movies, but that's a given. Also, I would like to see the ORIGINAL Titantic on DVD. You know, the one with Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck. THere are loads other, but I won't bother listing them all out here. Maybe later.

As far as SPECIAL EDITIONS go:

Scarface(1983)-An anamorphic re-release,commentary,documentary,5.1,uncut, Stone's script,and more good stuff

Batman-Not only am I begging for some kick***** special features, but Warner Bros BETTER have a good disc-case for this one!

The Good,The Bad,and The Ugly-Ive already got the regular release..But this Bad Boy needs a 5.1 re-mixing, anamorphic,a documentary *How to make a Spaghetti Western*

The Warriors(1979)-Anybody who has seen this knows darn well it deserves more supplements than a "theatrical trailer"

Goodfellas/Raging Bull-Two Scorsese classics deserve a lot more than "bare bones".

The Wiz/Moonwalker-I'm not sure on DVD yet, (The Wiz, that is) but I'd love to see some early make-up/screen tests of Michael Jackson..........Well... maybe not!

Now, as for the DVDs that are "missing in action", Here's what needs to be released:

The Mission(1986)-This *almost forgotten* gem needs a deluxe dvd release. A beautiful film that touches a personal side of this film-freak.

Shogun Assassin/Lone Wolf & Cub series-We need some Samurai DVDs badly! Hopefully "Samurai Jack" will open the doors to new & interested fans of this genre...And "Itto Ogami" and the Babycart is where it all should start!

Sweet Sweetback's Baadassss song-I'd love to hear an audio commentary for this!

El Topo-I'd love to see the storyboards for this!

Death Race 2000-I think this is on DVD...Have to look.

Roman Polanski's Macbeth & The Kurosawa remake, "Throne of Blood"

Where are the Sam Fuller films? Especially "Shock Corridor"??

Fire & Ice-Ralph Bakshi's rotoscoping take on "Conan"..In fact, a LOT of Bakshi's work is'nt on DVD.

Return of the Living Dead-I want brains

Vampyr-An early German/Goth expressionistic marvel.

We need some more Spaghetti Westerns like "Four of the Apocalypse",Django the Ba$tard,"CutThroats Nine,"Blindman",
and "Navajo Joe".

We need some more blaxpoitation classics like "Wattstax","SuperFly","Melinda","The Spook who Sat by the Door","Top of the Heap","Across 110th Street".

Once upon a Time in America-...Every DVD that is scored by Ennio Morricone is either "bare bones" or unavailable!!! A conspiracy?

Eraserhead-Now as every Lynch fan should know, there is no way in "heck" that Lynch would do a commentary on this and explain the movie, and of course..the baby.( Which is not a bad thing though). But I sure would like to see the deleted scenes,widescreen,better sound, Certainly better picture (I can barely see the dream sequence) and a nice documentary explaining the impact ERASERHEAD has on filmaking.

As for the current crop of DVDs that are out....I'd like to see all the Saturday Night Live related DVDs re-released with great bonus materials, including many of the original skits that inspired the movies. I most want to see this with Office Space. And that would make me buy Night at the Roxbury. For some reason, tho, their movies are always bare bones.

Bill And Ted's Bogus Journey - How hard would it be to release a special edition with extra footage (and there was several missing scenes, especially from the end), music video (cool montage of clips) and commentary (I'm sure Alex Winter would be happy to do one!!)

Flash Gordon - A SE with missing scenes, commentary (Brian BLESSARD!), a incidental music only version, music video and version with Sam J Jones' original voice instead of the overdub!! Cool!

Batman - Nuff said.

Pulp Fiction SE - Loads of stuff INCLUDING a version with the story all in chronological order!!

I was never a fan of the show, which is why I liked the movies so much...they were the perfect parodies of the Brady Bunch, cuz they were making fun of themselves. Granted, they aren't oscar winners, but I would still like to see them on DVD.

Add one more to my list...HEAVEN HELP US! I saw a bit of this movie on Bravo and I want it on DVD really bad now. Too bad even the VHS version is out of print, but hopefully they are gearing up for a re-release of it on DVD>

Throw Momma from the Train/The War of the Roses - The former has already been released, and the latter will be in stores by years' end. What do they have in common (other than that they were directed by the criminally talented Danny DeVito)? Both are bare bones discs. For shame! What they need to do, is add some director commentary and an iso score track (hiring the underrated David Newman to do the music was a master stroke). I'd get those in a heartbeat.

Other films that should be spoiled rotten on DVD:

Better Off Dead (audio commentary with Savage Steve Holland and John Cusack)

The Faculty (commentary with Robert Rodriguez and Kevin Williamson; 'nuff said)

I agree with "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey". I enjoyed this film more than the original and it would be great to see (hear, I mean) a reunion of Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves.

Mine probably falls into that "When H*ll Freezes Over" category -

Song of the South - Criterion Collection.

Heck, if Disney would do a decent release of it, that would be fine too - I just have serious doubts that they would release it under the Disney banner.

Batman Mask of the Phantasm is high on my list. The DVD is old and only has a French language track and a lousy theatrical trailer. I want, no, I NEED more goodies!

Singin' in the Rain is a favorite of mine too. The DVD only has a trailer. I know AMC showed it on tv with a running comentary feature available on SAP. I would be greatful for that alone. I doubt there is any behind the scenes, interview, etc, stuff to speak of. They didn't save that stuff back then. ~sigh~
The movie will be fifty years old in 2002. As #10 on the AFI's top 100 of all time list, I think it deserves a the re-release/DVD treatment.

A Pulp Fiction special edition would be nice too.
