DreamWorks this morning made it official that "Shrek" will hit DVD and VHS on Friday, November 2nd. Here is the full press release with all the disc features...

Happily ever after begins Friday, November 2, when "Shrek," the #1 movie of the year and DreamWorks' $261 million box office (to date) comedy smash releases on VHS and DVD featuring an all-new, never-before-seen extended ending -- making the biggest movie of the year even bigger! Developed exclusively for the home video release, the new footage picks up where the movie left off and continues the party with more than 150 "Shrek" characters showing us what goes on after the fairy tale ending. Created directly from its original digital format, the "Shrek" double disc DVD represents this groundbreaking movie in the most pristine presentation existing. The DVD offers more than 11 hours of entertainment and features 15 minutes of all-new animated material including interactive menus created by the movie's directors. Just as the movie broke new ground in technology, the DVD features Shrek's ReVoice Studio, a never-before-used DVD ROM program available for the first time ever that enables viewers to voice the lines of their favorite characters. The "Shrek" VHS and DVD will also feature an "Instant Win" game offering millions of great prizes instantly including X-Box Video Game Consoles with the TDK "Shrek" video game, Shrekked-out Kia Sedona mini vans, GameBoy Advances and free Baskin-Robbins ice cream. In addition, DreamWorks has teamed up with an all-star line up of promotional partners including Philips Electronics and TDK Interactive to offer consumers special discounts and merchandise. The VHS will be ownably priced at $15.95 and the DVD will be available for $19.95.

    DVD SPECIAL FEATURES

Created directly from its original digital format on to DVD, the "Shrek" DVD is the most visually stunning format on which to view this film. The DVD premieres 15 minutes of brand new animation from the creators of the film, PDI/DreamWorks, including the new extended ending and the animated menus. The DVD offers two ways to view the movie, either formatted to fit a television screen or in its original theatrical "widescreen" format. Packed with more than 11 hours of entertainment and insight, the DVD offers something for everyone with fascinating bonus programming offering an inside look into the movie's unprecedented technological achievements, along with DVD-ROM and set-top games, exclusive X-Box tips, a filmmaker's commentary, and "technical" goofs -- hilarious outtakes of animation in progress, as well as other material.

The "Shrek" DVD also introduces Shrek's ReVoice Studio featuring a never-before-used DVD-ROM technology that lets the viewer become the actor. The program enables viewers to select from 12 of the film's most popular scenes and record the lines of the characters. It then syncs up their voice with the character's mouth. The viewer can also view the scene and see how their performance as the voice of Shrek, Donkey, Fiona or Farquaad plays!

DreamWorks also is launching a new DVD section designed especially for kids called "DWK (DreamWorks Kids) - This Way To Play." This section provides kids with hours of fun, games, music and activities that can be played on either a computer or television, including Character Morph, a set-top game that enables viewers to mix and match the character's body parts.

I noticed that both a widescreen and full frame versions of the film will be on the DVD, which should make all those 'black bar" people happy...

I just think it's ridiculous that people think the black bvars are blocking out the picture. Anyways, this seems to be quite the jam packed discs. DREAMWORKS has done it again. THis gives me hope for the AI DVD release.

Do you think this will add pressure to Disney to make their DVD release for Atlantis better?

Definatly. I think ATLANTIS will hit it's stride on it's DVD/VHS release. I do plan to get the 2 disc set, but after hearing the dissapointment in THE EMPORER'S NEW GROOVE set, Disney will definatly do their best to pump up this one. I wouldn't be suprised if they have both the pan & scan and widescreen versions on this release.

    Wha?

    (stupified pause)

There really are people who think that? Yikes. How many of them are there?

I am afraid it's a majority. The lovers of widescreen movies were the first to embrace the DVD format since they were lovers of movies already, and it was automatic the format would cater to their wants and needs. But as more and more "joe six pack" type people (not my term, got that from the DVD Newsgroup!) get into DVD, they will be demanding more pan and scan. I just say they need to get over it, but I know we will start to see more and more multiple releases for each title, like we did with VHS before DVD came around.

I think studios will embrace this. They will be able to move just as many copies with both widescreen and pan & scan than just one version of the movie. In a year, I bet we'll see alot of movies with both versions of the movie on the disc.
