Question for Leap Larry Jojo
Ok, I thought I had asked this before, but couldn't find the thread to bump it. I don't think anybody replied, anyway, if I did post it. So I will ask again, as I think if anybody here will know, it will be Larry.
What can you tell me about Battle of the Planets and Video Girl AI on DVD? They have been in previews magazine, but I can't find any of them for sale anywhere. I thought amazon.com had BOTP up for pre order once, but now there is no sign of it. It may have been the Gatchaman DVDs, tho, that I thought I saw, I don't know. At any rate, I thought BOTP was supposed to be out in July or Aug and Video Girl AI in September or October. Outside of PREVIEWS, I can't find any mention of them.

I honestly haven't heard of any Battle of the Planets release on DVD. There might be a Gatchaman DVD out there from Urban Vision, but that's the updated 90s OAV, not the original show. I suppose the BOTP DVDs could be delayed. I'll ask around.
I know Video Girl Ai is on VHS, but I haven't seen or heard anything about the DVDs either. Sorry. I know someone who's a big Ai fan, though, so I'll see if he knows. Keep in mind Ai is a Viz property and Viz is EXTREMELY behind when it comes to releasing DVDs for their anime properties. They've been so caught up with Pokemon that a lot of their other stuff has been neglected. Like the Galaxy Express 999 films...

Video Girl AI is in the July 2001 edition of Previews, page 442, and it says it's the first volume of the DVD, with a September 2001 release date. I don't know when this information was prepared by Previews, but it would be a bummer if they delayed this. This is one I've been wanting on DVD for quite a while.

Okay. Apparently, there was a petition sent to Viz in regards to their handling of the Ai translation a week or so ago. Apparently the VHS release had some fairly poor subtitles and there was a demand for a re-translation. I don't know if the petition was successful, but the delay may be caused in part by how fans wanted the DVD.
Supposedly, Rhino was going to release Battle of the Planets by now...Rhino does not have a reputation of being punctual...
And there are no Gatchaman DVDs of the updated OAV series. Urban Vision hasn't released any.

Updated series? I didn't know there was one. I just ordered the Gatchaman DVD from amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...633960-5831767
what is the difference between what is on that DVD and what you are talking about?

Oh. I guess Urban Vision will be releasing it sooner than originally planned. AFAIK, it hasn't been released in stores yet.
Anyway, it says it all on the description on your Amazon.com link. Basically, they took main gist of the original Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets) and compressed and reanimated the story into a three-volume OAV series. If you wanted the original Battle of the Planets, this ain't it.
Regardless, it's a pretty fun OAV series--brainless, but the action is pretty awesome to watch. Very slick, greasy choreography.
BTW--Do you own the Samurai X: Trust and Samurai X: Betrayal DVDs? It's a beautifully balletic two-volume series.

Well, I've been wanting Gatchaman for years, and was very tempted more than once to get the three VHS set that came out. I am glad I waited now. Gatchaman has been shipped from amazon, so I am eagerly waiting for the UPS man to knock at my door today! Hopefully, anyway.
I haven't seen Samuri X. I might have to check them out. Right now, I am working on getting the complete DVDs of both Nadia and the Big O.
