The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast due for Blu-ray 3D Fall 2011

    Like This Thread!

Don't worry, The Lion King will be be getting it's Diamond Edition release as well. At least now we have an idea what the cover will look like, and looks like Disney is continuing it's sideways title trend a la Bambi.

Umm... Simba's head is way too big for that box.

I would consider getting the blu-ray but only if there is substantial improvement special features wise over the Platinum edition. I don't want to but this one a third time unless it's really worth it (and I don't consider HD really worth it for an animated movie).

I remember hearing they were prepping some 90's animated movies for 3-D re-release in IMAX, but they didn't go through with it. I guess they saved their work.

I hope this means they're keeping Beauty and the Beast on the rack longer than one year. Their last DVD release of the movie was there and gone in an instant....

Why in the world would I (or anyone) want to watch these two movies in 3D?

This is getting stupid now. What's next? The silent films of the 1920s? Early black and white cartoons? Give me a break.

Seconded. I believe that the films were great in their original versions. They'll just be post-production 3D similar to that of last year's Clash of the Titans and The Last Airbender. 3D is an experience that these films never had in the '90s. It's one that no 3D HDTV can duplicate. Plus, I doubt there's a lot of people who will plop down the equivalent of a used car for one of them anyway. I'm against these releases all the way.

This will look amazing on Blu-Ray! I'm looking forward to getting it and I agree that there is no benefit from seeing this in 3D. Can't wait for Aladdin next year too though...Finally Disney is listening to us!

The one benefit I can imagine is if they have the capability of splitting up the layers of the different animation cells, most simply the characters from the backgrounds. I really can't imagine what it'll look like in practice; the characters themselves can't possibly be made 3-dimensional if they were drawn flat, can they?

Also, if the B&tB combo is four disks with one BR3D, one BR, one DVD and one digital copy disk, what about that second BR disk in the set out now?

Don't knock it until you've seen it. Nightmare Before Christmas was great in 3D. I believe it can be done.

I hate how the entire Internet pees on 3D.

Exactly. 3D is really good when done right, just like any other film tool. Also isn't it far easily to make animation look good in post-production 3D than it is for live-action?

I don't have a 3D TV so I won't be getting the 3D version but I'll definitely be getting the Blu-Ray for The Lion King since that is one of my favourite movies ever.

I believe the second blu-ray disc of extras will be exclusive to the Diamond Edition. Same applies to TLK. It basically boils down to what people would rather have, a 3D and digital copy, or an extras disc. Should be a no-brainer for most people.

So do you need a special type of tv or blu-ray player to watch 3-D blu-rays in 3-D or do you just need glasses?

You need a 3D HDTV and 3D blu-ray player as well as glasses. However the PS3 has been updated to play 3D blu-rays, so if you have one that's 1/3 of the setup.

But you need to have both, otherwise just having a 3-D Blu-ray player or PS3 hooked up to a regular HDTV will cause the disc to just pop a message up saying that one of your connections is not 3-D.

But, really, I don't think either movie needs a 3-D upgrade. And I haven't seen a 3-D TV to try the glasses, but I remember when Spy Kids 3-D first came out on DVD and I tried to watch it with the glasses---all I saw was a mess of colors and lines.

That's pretty much exactly what he said.

I'll have to wait and see what the 3D looks like before passing judgement, however I don't have a 3D TV so unless one of my friends buy one or they re-release them in the cinema I won't see them in 3D. I'm just glad that Lion King is finally gonna get an HD release.

Well, for some people, even with what you said, they might think that they would only need a 3-D TV and a regular Blu-Ray player.

Does Disney ever put out a plain-ol Blu-Ray? I don't want any of this extra crap, I want to pay a regular price for a single disc in a single case.

I think I have seen a 2-disc Blu-Ray Beauty and the Beast (without the DVD or "Digital Copy")

No way I'd ever upgrade my home theater system for two movies that were NEVER made with 3D in mind, no matter how much I love both of them.

So far the only BatB BD release is 3 discs: 2 BDs, 1 DVD.
