    Robotech Box Set!!!!!

    Like This Thread!
I got the Robotech Box Set today!!!!! YAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!! I went to Best Buy after work to get some blank tapes and (this is usually a BAD idea) I decided to check out the DVD section. I saw the single disc volumes of Robotech and asked the lady if they had the box set, expecting the answer to be no since this isn't supposed to be out til June 19. Imagine my surprise when she went to their section where they keep their box sets and gave me a copy! So I said, "I see you're breaking pre street on this. This doesn't come out til the 19th." She asked for my copy back and I said, "No. I'm not complaining about it!" So she said she needs to check it because they could be fined for it. So I gave it to her, she left, and I went over to where they had more copies on the shelf, grabbed one, and proceeded to the check out! HAHA! Suckers. As if I was leaving that store without Robotech! I watied so long for this! And I got it for $35.00, which is a little cheaper than I could get it thru the video store I work at cuz they are selling it for $45.00.

Hey, DG, I notice at the end of each Robotech episode, there is a plug for the Comico Robotech comics. I don't know if they increased your sales, but I thought of you when I saw that, because you've been saying all along that KWB should promote DCs comics at the end of their cartoons as well.

Maybe KWB does, but you can never read it because the screen is cut in half to show you some dumb promo for something completely different?

The end credits I think would be an ideal time to plug them, but alas...execs just can't put two & two togethor. And didn't the set include att 85 episodes but on how many discs? What were the extras? Give us info, Cal!

There are 12 episodes in the first set (with many more to follow, I hope!) on two discs. The box set is the only way to get the extras (NO extras on the two discs with the episodes, which are for sale separately). Disc three has Codename Robotech (the original series feature), audio commentary with series developer Carl Macek, animation model sheets, and international clips.

So all 85 episodes will eventually be released on DVD, though. I thought all 85 were being released at once. Nuts.

Talk about flooding the market! I would have to take out a small loan to buy all those DVDs!

I'm a wee bit ignorant about Robotech, but I do know that the entire TV run of Macross (a successor of Robotech, I think) is about to be released on one DVD set. For info, bop on over to:

Nope. Macross constitutes about one quarter of the Robotech series. Macross is simply the uncut Japanese version. Robotech is the slightly rewritten, edited dub version.

To elaborate--Robotech as a whole was actually 3 different anime TV shows rewritten to fit one continuity. What they did was divide the 3 shows up into different 'generations', so each show takes place in a different era of the continuity. Macross ran for 36 episodes, which was followed by Southern Cross, which, in the rewritten script, took place many years after Macross. After Southern Cross, another show followed chronicling yet another 'era' in the Robotech timeline. It was some pretty clever rewriting, if you ask me.

Why was this done? Because in order to have the show run in syndication, they needed more than 65 episodes. Many anime shows were 30-40 episode series. So what they did was take three totally different anime series and try to tie a thread between them without changing the basic nature of the original shows.

It took me about 10 years to get all my facts straight concerning Robotech. As you can see, it is not easy.

Heck, I'm still trying to get them straight myself! So where does Macross 2 and the movies fit into this time line? Is there a good site out there that chronicles all of this?

Macross: Do You Remember Love is a movie retelling of the Macross TV series. Some of the events are changed slightly. Think of it as an alternative take on the Macross story.

Macross 2 was the first sequel made, but none of the original staff (except one) was involved. It was eventually written off as an alternate universe type of sequel.

The widely-regarded TRUE sequel to Macross is Macross Plus, which takes place two decades after the end of the first Macross. There is a movie version and an OAV version; both tell the same story, but the movie version emphasizes the human drama more than the OAV one.
