When I purchased Jurassic Park on DVD, I opted to pick the widescreen version rather than the full-screen version, naturally because widescreen is typically superior. But here's the thing: the dvd isn't normal widescreen; there's no letterbox formatting, no black bars on the top and bottom- instead the whole picture is squished in and everything looks taller and skinnier than they are supposed to. What's up with this!?

You must have your DVD player set to anamorphic mode, meaning for anamorphic DVDs it will output the picture without all or some of the black bars (depending on the ratio). Just change the setting to Standard 4:3 screen and the player should add the black bars for you.
