I have a collie/german shepherd mutt named Thor. He's the coolest dog in the world. ;) My story with him I guess is he always keeps finding a way to run away for the day. We keep him in the backyard during the day. It used to be we kept him inside this blue picket fence, but he'd put his paws on the top beam and jump out. Then we replaced that fence with a 10 foot tall chain link fence. But somehow he managed to climb that as well and got out. At one point I think we figured out a way to keep him from climbing out, but then he dug a hole under it and then snuck out under the deck. So then we blocked the whole. THEN he figured out a new way to climb the fence and get out. It was unbelievable. now we took the fence down and tied him to a stake with a long leash, so now my mom complains because he's always stomping around in her garden. And that's my dog story of the day.

I have enough dog stories to fill a book. I'll give a few cliff's notes, though:
*Buddy, a rabbit beagle, was the one I had the longet--eight years. He hated minorities intently. Although only about 20 lbs., he loved nothing better than chasing them screaming down the street. He also hated to go to the veterinarian's clinic and would instinctively balk within half a block of it. Bud was notorious for bolting the front door and scheming ways out of the backyard. Some of his favorite foods included cooking grease and used booger-covered tissues.
*His mate Brandy suffered much of her life with a skin condition that required frequent special baths at the vet's office. After Buddy disappeared around Easter of 1994, she mourned so intently she stopped eating, lost weight and teeth rapidly, and died five months later.
*Blossom and Bambi were twin black Labs we got from a neighbor dog in late 1995. They could be easily told apart because the latter had a grey ruff on her butt. Bambi was the more aggressive and tended to steal her sister's babies, unfortunately killing them in the process. She disappeared in late summer or early fall 1996, but Blossom was with us for six more years, finally passing away last year, one week after her last child took sick and died. She birthed innumerable children, a whopping ten of them in her final litter.
*Boomer was an unfortunate dog. He lost one eye in a fight. He had a leg fractured when a car ran over it and walked funny on it...until a second car hit him and reset it. He died after a third car hit him on Valentine's Day 1997.
*Pierre is a poodle whose previous lovers have included Blossom's daughter Bernadette (a Lab/husky mix three times his size) and a silver tabby cat named Tiger Lily. Unfortunately he has recently developed cataracts in both eyes that somewhat impair his vision. His favorite spot in the house is right next to me, seated on the bench, when I work on the computer.

I had a dog named Zeb that was a Lab. When I was like 6 months old I used to grab onto his tail and he'd pull me up. This is how I learned to walk!! I used to also sleep on Zeb when I was a baby( or so I've been told.) When I was 9 we had to put him to sleep:( Now we have 2 mutts, Tasha and Scooby. THey aren't as smart as Zeb, but they're sweet. I got lots more stories, be back later...:)

HEY! CATS RULE! They're clearly superior to dogs.
...but I did have an old Boston terrier named Tootsie Pop about 13 years old. It had to be protected by one o' my cats since it was virtually defenseless, who considered it its best friend. It was a good dog, usually not active, but happy to come over and slobber on you...:) Man, I miss her...:(

Geesh that's a funny pic of my dog..ah well..that's her... Zoe...and she's in the middle of one of her "howls" so to speak..that's when she's barking at you in a playful mood..heh
She does what my family calls "Rip-snorting"...Don't ask where the term originated from...as I don't even know. What Rip-Snorting is, is she runs back and forth through the house, with some sort of toy, and does this for about 5mins...back and forth through the hall-way to the bedroom..to the family room..back and forth at her top speed..it's hilarious to watch.
She doesn't like riding in the car...as it's only to go to the vet..lol. She hates bigger dogs cuz she was attacked by one very early....
We adopted her from a shelter, cuz her owners gave them to them cuz she nipped at their child...cuz the child went into Zoe's cage...while she was sleeping or somthing. Anyway, it's all for the better, cuz she lives with me now.. :)

I'm definitely a dog person. But I live in a small apartment and am not home enough to really take care of one and give it the attention it needs, so I don't have one, and probably won't for a long time.
When I was in high school, though, my folks got a Dalmation. My story about her: She loved to play with rocks (her pet rocks, we called them), mouthing and tossing them around. One day she brought in a rock and started playing with it in the kitchen. It was very flat rock, and we became progressivly fascinated and amused with her because she had a very hard time picking it up. She couldn't get her lips or teeth around it, and so could get it only an inch or so off the ground before it would fall out of her mouth. Then she would put her paw on it, to keep it steady, and bend down to try to pick it up. But because her leg was longer than her neck, her leg (and the rock under it) would scoot away across the tile floor, and she would chase it in a circle.
We watched her for about 15 minutes as she fought this thing. The more we laughed the more furious and energetic she attacked it. Eventually, of course, the fun wore off: My parents and sister wandered away, and I went back to reading. Then, after a minute I looked back up to see what she was doing.
The rock was at her paw and she was looking straight at me with a look of--well, I can only call it disappointment. She held my gaze for a few seconds, then looked down at the rock. Then she bent over and with NO EFFORT scooped it up and trotted away with it in her mouth. Apparently, the whole thing had been an act, put on to amuse us.
She died only a few years ago, while I was back home visiting. She had a heart attack while I was playing with her.

I split this thread into two. If the "Cat Lovers" thread gets to be about cats and their virtues, it should be the same for the "Dog Lovers" thread. To discuss the relative merits of cats and dogs (and the merits of other animals as pets) check out the new "Pets" thread.

I'm with Maxie... I adore dogs, but I live in a small apartment. Sigh.
Still, at least I get to see my parents' dauchund (did I spell that right?), Rudolph von Hogendorfer, or Rudy for short. He's the most psychotic dog I've ever met! I rescued him from the pound in the short interval I was living with my parents after grad school. Yet even though I saved him, he NEVER grew to like me, no matter how hard I tried (and dogs usually love me). We think he may have been abused by someone who looked like me. But whenever I would come into my own house, he would bark furiously. When I came a little close to him, he'd grow worried and run back and forth around the room... he was too scared to stay in one place, but he didn't want to leave my parents (whom he loves). If I'd get too close, he'd hide under the bed for upwards of a day and a half.
Anyhow, this leads up to the story:
I brought a friend over one time, and having two people in the house was just too much for him. Rudy instantly became a red, cylindrical blur as he dashed for the bed. We knew he was incredably upset, because, well, I really have no earthly idea how he did this, but somehow, as he was running full speed, he was also pooping at full speed.
Yes, I'll get it out of the way before someone else does: I scared the *bleep* out of him.

Normally I'm a cat person, but my family does own a dog, and a pretty nice one at that - a golden retriever. Due to a severe lack of creativity in our family during the time we got her, we named her Goldie. She's a sweetie, and very photogenic, but lately she's picked up the annoying habit of wanting outside every five minutes. Maybe she's just getting old (she's about 10 years old) or something...
I like big friendly dogs, almost as much as I like cats :) But don't even talk to me about tiny little toy dogs. I can't stand 'em, especially the ones that have the little shrill barks and that yap incessantly if anything gets within 50 feet of them. The only little dog I never hated was this little apricot poodle a friend of mine had (still does, I think). It was cute and didn't fuss too much, but on the other hand it did have these nasty little claws...so when the dog got excited and jumped on you, you'd better hope you weren't wearing shorts.

Niki is an award winning dog. and that makes ME and award winning handler... She does both agility and show. not professionally though... it was just for the local 4H club.
Charlie... Well Charlie is the PERFECT show dog... but he was never trained like that so... yeah...
well that's my doggies...
Mad Hatter, I must say that I laughed out very loud when I read your story *ROTFL*!
Anyway here is my dog story:
When I lived in Denmark we had two dogs; Sif and Ronja. Ronja was a German Chicken hound ( note that I translated this directly...I don't know the name in english )
She loved to go hunting and was an adorable dog. If you petted her you would have a friend for life! Her better half, Sif is a curleyhaired dachshund with a very peculiar personality. When we got her she was only a wee puppy and she pee'd on my mom when she saw her because she was so happy ( the dog was!)
We soon bonded me and Sif...She's a real little lady with her own mind and I'd spoil her and go hunting mice in the fields with her. But be warned about her...sometimes something just snaps in her and she goes crazy! She barks hysterically and having Ronja by her side does not help much so they get hyped and go into a frenzy and attack each other in a chaos of fangs, claws, roars and sqeeals. Those two dogs once killed one of our sheep! But really! they would never attack people ( they never did ).
One time they ate up my birthdaycake...
Ronja died 2 years ago of cancer. She was so misserable and my stepdad took his huntingriffle out and the dog thought she was going hunting and wagged her tail. She couldn't even get out of her bed so he had to lift her up in the car. Then he drove of to their favorite hunting spot where the vet was waiting and he gave her a shot and she slept in in peace, thinking she was going hunting. I think she died happy.
Sif is still alive but still in Denmark. I miss her very much. She is 13 years now.
And because I miss her so much we got a puppy here in the states. I call her Lobo and she is a mix between labrador and Golden retriever. We got her from petsmart where you can adopt a dog from a shelter.
She's a sweety and is VERY affectionate. She loves to run off to the neigbours and won't listen when I call. She cries when she has to be alone and that has resulted in the police comming over 5 times to warn us! but she doesn't bark more than the other dogs in the neighbouthood so I think it's out stuckup neighbour..grrrr!
Her best friend is our cat Mike who is a kitten. they are the same age and we got them the same day. But Lobo can be pretty rough on Mike and would be able to swallow him in one mouthfull...so I'm in a constant struggle to keep them away from eachother.

Ok, I made the thread, I guess I better start posting my dog stories!
My mom was a big dog lover (still is) so when I was a kid, there was never a time we didn't have dogs at some point. For most of my childhood, we had about seven dogs regurally. There was Squirt, a little dog that looked like a fox that my mom found at a gas station outside of the Twin Cities when I was just a few months old (so they always said he was my brother!) and Squirt died when I was 18, so he lived quite a long life! Then there was Ebony, who my mom found one night walking in the snowy road while she was out burning garbage (we lived in the country). Ebony was just a small little pup that we found out later got dropped off by somebody we knew because they didn't want the puppies. Of course my mom always had alot to say about people who would just dump their dogs off out in nowhere. And so do I! Take your dog to a shelter if you don't want them anymore! Those were our inside dogs. We also had some outside dogs that we had shelters for.
My parents had a collie once by the name of Fella that I was quite attatched to as a little boy. He was my favorite dog when I was a kid, but he wound up disappearing and we never knew what happened to him...until one day we found his bones in a ditch. :( That was one of two dogs we had that got hit by cars.
One more dog story before I move to another thread...one night Squirt ran off. And Squirt was famous for getting out of his leash and running off, and fathering puppies everywhere. So my mom and dad went out looking for him one winter night when he got loose and came back a while later not with Squirt but with Mama and Baby. Mama was a golden lab and Baby was her puppy that my parents found with her at an abandoned farm in what we called "the hole in the woods" (a stretch of dirt road where the trees bend over the top of the road so you can't see the sky so it's like driving thru a tunnel of trees). But my dad was an ass and later had Baby put to sleep for no good reason. I was too young to really know why he did it, but it was the first time I really remember my mom crying and fighting with him. My mom never has her dogs put to sleep. It's just against her beliefe. She dosen't believe in euthenasia.

We also once had a toy poodle (DrBelch's post about his poodle reminded me of it) that got poisoned by a mean neighbor once. I will never forget when my dad brought home our dead dog...the surrality of it all just made me laugh. I guess it was just a way I dealt with bad things when I was a kid, laughing at inappropriate times.
Oh...and where did Squirt go that night he got loose and we found Mama and Baby? We later found him under the house.

Bump
Are there really that many more cat lovers on the boards over dog lovers?
I ordered Shiloh and Shiloh 2 on DVD tonight. Can't wait to see them!
