Okay Fellas, I have been talking with a few cartoon collectors and they do have on video "Droopy's Good Deed" with some of the blackface gags except the part with the Millionare man and Spike. But I have a few more people that might have the complete original version...I'll keep you guys posted on any news on this cartoon.

When I get home from work I'll see if it exists on The Tex Avery LD Set :)

Sadly Glenn, that one scene is missing from the LD set...That's the only scene in the cartoon that doesn't have the original footage. But I'm going to check in with some other collectors that might have the film intact.

Well, after the bomb explodes when the rich man is handing Spike money, they are supposed to turn into two very stereotypical black men, with the rich man's "35, 40, 45, 50", changing to "Fifty five, seventy, 999 trillion, billion, and two bits!" while throwing bits of money confetti in the air.

Back when cartoons were in syndicated release in 16mm prints to local stations, this is one which often ran uncut, much to the delight of those of us who've been into home video for nearly 25 years now!

And yes, the Compleat Tex Avery laserdisc set did inadvertantly include a cut version of this as well as "Garden Gopher."

I'm one of the folks who stated that I have this cartoon uncut- I even posted an image from the removed scene for my avatar in days gone by. However, I am also the one who stated that my print was also recorded as well from one of the local networks that aired it ONCE, a very worn copy of it that I just happened to be recording during a day of snowstorms that caused some fuzziness in our TV signal 18 or so years ago......

BUT IT RAN UNEDITED!!!! :D

It seems like our local stations (I lived in New Orleans back then) were pretty liberal in showing uncut cartoons, because I know I saw Droopy's Good Deed, Half Pint Pygmy, and all of the Mammy cartoons unedited when they were in syndication in the early to mid eighties. Believe it or not, and I've mentioned this before, the MGM Boskos ran during this time period as well. I specifically remember The Old House's "There Ain't No Spooks" song, and Bosko's Easter Egg's "Easter Time Is the Time For Eggs" song. I sure wish I had the foresight to tape them back then.

I too have strong memories of the above-mentioned MGM toons airing uncut; in my case it was on KXTX TV 39 Dallas ("Livin' in the heart of the Lone Star State, 39 is mine!"). Every time I saw it, there & on WTBS, not a second was cut. And it aired quite frequently. I wish we'd had a VCR back then. And that I was interested enough in cartoons to record them. Oh well. But as much as it's been on, someone's bound to have a good copy. And if all else fails, we could go with Plan Z: that coup of AOL-TW & get the unedited masters to show. Just a thought.

Yes, the TV stations here in Chicago (WGN-9 and WFLD-32) used to air almost all their cartoons uncut. Ch. 32 showed MGM cartoons in the mornings and afternoons. They showed all the Mammy cartoons as well as unedited versions of "Droopy's Good Deed" and "Garden Gopher". Then again, this was the late 1970s-early 1980s we're talking about, when the populace wasn't so touchy-feely and afraid to offend anyone for the sake of humor.

This may sound like kind of a dumb idea, but if someone had the right equipment, they could just take the beautiful edited version from either CN or the laserdisc and edit the censored parts back into it. It'd look sort of freaky switching from CN's or the laserdisc print to the edited copy, though...

there was an uncut copy (16mm) on ebay a while back - it went for something like $150+.

one of those films + $40-50 will get it transferred to tape (which is easy to dub)

I couldn't justify the expense to have another 6-10 secs of 'toon, but maybe someday, someone will.

and...
it seems to me I've seen that scene - must have been on thw web, otherwise I'd have it on tape :D
anyone remember where this was?

Isn't that a great picture? Just as I remembered that scene.

Now does anybody have a picture of "Spike in blackface" scene from "Garden Gopher"?

In my area, what used to be WTAF--now WTXF (ch. 29 in Philly) showed all the Tom and Jerry cartoons uncut. However, WPIX (ch. 11 in NYC) always had the mammy scenes edited for some reason. This goes to show you even mammy wasn't liked before cable had been invented!

Around the same time, WGN also aired the 1960 made-for-TV Mr. Magoos with Charlie unaltered.

isn't chicago a great city? Back in the late 70's, early 80's, we got most if not all of our toons uncut. WFLD-32 aired a block of MGM toons to be proud of! Mammy was there! the blackface gags were there! The chinese transformations were there! My favorite of all time was the Magical Maestro. I loved the chinese part and the ending. does CN show the Tom and Jerry cartoon where Mammy leaps down the flight of stairs? so many cartoons to choose from back in those days: WGBO-66 had toons on sunday mornings before they turned Spanish. WJYS-62 was crap, but later began showing japanese anime, then turned to crap again. CHI TOWN!!!

I have a question about this cartoon that was never answered: WHY is the part where Spike gets hit by lightening edited? Because he isn't even in blackface! He's just covered in black soot. No black lips, no bows, nothing, just black soot.

I don't think CN likes mammy!

I mentioned that WPIX--channel 11 in NYC used to show Tom and Jerry, and I clearly remember The Mouse Comes to Dinner (1945) when Mammy appears at teh very beginning...and WPIX left that part out and started the film with Tom coming out from the plant (which is what CN does now).

Even in those rare occurences that she is shown, how voice is re-dubbed to clarify into more so-called correct English.

If that is not enough, I recently saw Mouse Cleaning on CN's theatre website, and even that is edited and re-dubbed!

What are we allowed to watch, CN???

I believe the result of the bolt of lightning in "Droopy's Good Deed" *was* intended to be a blackface gag. Even though it wasn't as extreme / obvious as others in Avery's cartoons. Spike did have the usual blackface lips. Plus, on the soundtrack we hear "Swanee River" (if I recall correctly, I'll have to check later today be 100% sure) which can be heard during blackface scenes in some of Avery's other cartoons ("Lucky Ducky" comes to mind).
