Which show do you feel had the best opening sequence, Batman: The Animated Series, The Adventures of Batman and Robin, Superman, The New Batman-Superman Adventures, or Batman Beyond? I'm not talking about any of the Cartoon Network/Toonami intros, just the original openers, that were originally shown on FoxKids and KidsWB!.

Here are my own picks, with a little explanation of what makes me like (or dislike) each one...

#1 Batman Beyond
Wow! Where do I start? Well I guess with the driving musical score. Techno-heavy metal really captured the flavor of the entire series. Very well performed and totally different from the previous animated musical styles. As for the visuals, it was all original animation used only in the intro. There was so much to look at and it all looked cool. The use of traditional cel animation combined with video graphics and CGI renderings was a very unique blend. Very slick, dark and sexy. I loved the way they put little graphic icons of many of Batman's advasaries into the opening. Only after having seen the particular episode they were in did I recognize the silhouette of Inque, the ace of spades representing the Royal Flush Gang, the "swirling eyeball" of Spellbinder, and the blazing skull of Blight right at the end. And I loved the way the music came crashing down at the end to give way to each episode's title. This one is definitely my favorite.

#2 Batman: The Animated Series
I have to admit that the very first time I saw it, I was all "eh, okay." It wasn't until later that I began to recognize and appreciate the flavor of the series that I started to understand the style of the opening. It shows the audience the mystery of the show (and the main character) as well as the style of the animation that we see in the shadowy Batman's movement. The music was a nice evolution of the movies' theme. I think the only two things that still bug me about the entire sequence are the awkward appearance of the WB-Shield into police blimp right at the beginning and the final shot of Batman right at the end. It's a static painting of him and it's really not that well done. I would have liked to see a cel drawing of Bats, closer to Bruce Timm's style. And while the title cards of each episode I guess aren't technically part of the opening, they're just too darn cool no to mention and they help place BTAS at number 2 for me.

#3 New Batman-Superman Adventures
While most of the imagery of this opening is taken from the contents of some of the actual episodes, there is enough original animation present in the sillouetted action and graphics to put this at number 3 for me. I was really surprised when I first viewed it to see the images of two dead bodies (Bruce's parents). And I really like the red and blue gels used for Bats and Supes respectively. The music was well written and very true to the characters' previous series. plus points are awarded for the letter box framing used.

#4 Superman
Well, there was only one segment of totally original animation (the stylized Superman flying over the Metropolis skyline) the rest was from episodes within the series. The music was great, totally new for Superman and very appropriate for the character. Otherwise there's just not enough new or exciting stuff going on here for me to rank it any higher.

#5 The Adv. of Batman and Robin
Hmmm... basically the same music from BTAS and no new animation (unless the opening shot of them walking towards the Batmobile is original, I can't place what episode that would be from). The scenes used from previous episodes were trying too hard to tell a story and it just didn't quite work for me. So that's why B&R are coming in at #5.

Well, I hope I wasn't too long winded. I'd love to see what everyone else ranks as they're favorites. AND I wonder what we'll be offered from Justice League's opening.....

The original opening will always remain my favorite. From the first time I saw it, I was just in awe. The whole sequence played out amazingly and the stylization of the opening just made it so different then anything else on the tv at the time. While the animation isn't top notch, it is still amazing. This is an opening that will forever stick in my head.

A close 2nd would be the Batman Beyond intro. The mix of animaiton and computer enhanced live action was sweet.

No need to add anything.
Great minds think alike :)

Okay, speaking totally about the opening sequences alone, here are may favorites.

I think Batman Beyond had the best actual opening sequence. Not so much because it was MTV or because anything. It was just extremely vivid and opened everyshot with exclamation point.

Coming in at not second, but 1a is the original intro for Batman TAS. This sequence has the absoulute best music of all the openings, because it takes the Elfman score and does it one better. I actually like the TAS theme better than the one from the 89 movie. (Then the Mask of the Phanstasm opening did it one better than *that*)

The sequence itself is superb. Right away it establishes that this is a time like Ameicas 1940's...yet very *different*. Thus making the world and Batman himself belivable in their context before you even *see* Batman. Having Batman appearing in sillouette until the lightning strikes behind is just cool. There aren't words for it.

The Superman into has a nice hook music wise, but always seemed underdone. Granted, I could be unfairly comparing it to John Williams movie themes. I always wondered why they didn't just do the movie hook with a variation to it like they did for Batman. I was also disapointed that there was no new animation created soley for the intro. But I will give points to how the Last Son of Krypton footage is used at the very begining. Jor-El and Lara holding each other and looking upward, the rocket blasting off, Krypton exploding, Martha and Pa finding the baby, and then young Clark running which then goes to Superman flying. All in less than 10 seconds.

I think they should've built an original aniamation for the opening around those scenes.

Incidently, am I the only guy who gets misty whenever he sees the Kal-El rocket launch scene in anything comics or otherwise in Superman?

Which brings us to the Adventures of Batman and Robin intro and the Superman/Batman adventures intro.

Adv. of Batman and Robin just leaft a bitter taste in my outh because regardless of Robin being made a constant, the old intro did not need to be changed let alone replaced with just some random clips and the victory march version of the TAS op. I love the victory-march version of the TAS op I just dont think it works as an opening for the show.

The Batman/Superman adventures opening. The way the clips were overlapped with siloetted new animation was kinda neat but the opening song sounds like its drunk. Still, I'll give a couple points for the one animation of Bruce and his parents bodies under a spotlight morphing into the Bat-Signal. Very nice.

Heres hoping the Justice League gets a cool intro and not some Toonami thing with the ugly technotrack and robot guy talking over it.

Well, since i don't have cable, i can only remember some of the intros. But, i'd go w/ BTAS, BB, TAB&R, and i don't remember TNB/SA and STAS well enough to rate. I had no idea there were Bruce's parents in the TNBA song. So, from the three i remember, that's how it goes. Pretty much for reasons you all have already said.

Optimal,

Try this web site for the Superman intro, under the title Superman: The Original. http://www.toonamiarsenal.com/download-disabled/batman.html

I don't know where you can view the New Sup/Bat Adv online.

Batman Beyond, then BTAS. I don't really find any of the others particularly memorable.

It's between BTAS and BB, though I'm having a tough time picking one. I'm leaning toward BTAS because it had such an impact on me when I first saw it. It's possible, though, that BB's would have had the same impact had it debuted in the place of BTAS years ago. I don't know. I'll call it a tie.

no doubt the original animated series. you can know nothing about batman, see the opening sequence, and completely understand the character with no words at all. the faceless thugs. the pans up the building the ever shadowed batman right up until the climax when the lightning strikes and we catch a glimpse of how he looks. it is simply the best setup of a character. and the way the score matches u with the action is nothing short of fantsia calibur. the first time it aired, i sat infront of the t.v. and after the opening sequence, i knew there were to be no "biffs" or "pows". not even a "thud!" this guy was not super and he was nobody' friend. his hall of justice was a dark alley. he was the night.

B:TAS and then BB.

Why? An opening, in theory, should introduce mood, theme, and/or characters so that a new audience member can see it and 'grasp' the concept of the show immediately without having to seen prior episodes.

B:TAS was just jaw dropping and awe inspiring in it's opening. As others stated, you got who this character was and what he's about in this dark world. The opening set the mood for the stories that followed. And best of all... no words!!! It told you all you needed to know without a single word. Not even the title of the show. I have to this day, never seen an opening as cool as that, tho' Read or Die (R.O.D.) comes pretty dang close.

BB I placed second for two reasons. The first is entirely personal. I don't like techno (nor rap, hard rock, country or Chinese Opera for that matter). My first love in music is orchestral soundtracks (I blame John Williams for that, I was hooked when I saw Star Wars as a kid back in the 70's). That said, the theme was pretty cool (I caught myself humming it a couple of times). Secondly, it told the audience what the mood of the series was to be. I loved how it promised themes for the series by listing some of the sins. The episodes themselves lived up to the mood the opening suggested, yet sadly imo it did not meet the themes that the opening had shown the audience, which is why this comes in second overall.

Note: BB would have been first if I just went solely on Dana dancing!! :p

Technically, weren't there three Batman openings?

1) The classic we all know and love.
2) The the Batman & Robin Adventures version. The music was different and had a lot of Robin scenes.
3) This version premiered after it was on Saturday mornings. It had the original music and had a much more balanced combination of scenes featuring Batman and Robin fighting a variety of villains. It is notable that Mr. Freeze showed up a lot in this version (this was when the awful Batman and Robin movie came out).

I'd have to say that the classic BTAS version is my favorite, followed closely by the Batman/Superman Adventures opening. Batman Beyond is third, which is followed by the Adventures of Batman & Robin version (too much Robin, but the different music was stirring). The Superman and third Batman openings tie in last place.

I'm not sure I've ever seen the third version you're talking about, Karkull. But it sounds better than the first B&R opening. There was a point when I was not as avid a follower of the animated Batman as I started out being and ended up being. Does anyone know where I could see this version? Is it on any of the vidoes?

Thanks,

It was used mostly towards the end of the show's run on FOX. The "third" intro does appear on one VHS tape for sure. BATMAN: FIRE & ICE is the one that features the thir dintro that Fox used for B:TAS. The "second" intro is featured on the ROBIN tape.

Thanks, DG. It will be well worth the free kids rental price at Blockbuster to see it.

I saw the very first airing of Batman: The Animates Series all those years ago. By the end of the opening sequence, I knew that it was going to be epic.
