I guess you could call these shows "Live-action Anime." SOme of my all time favorites are older, but nonetheless classics in my book.
Ultra Man
Johnny Sako and his flying robot
Godzilla (of course!)
Anyone else remember/like these or others?

I haven't seen too much live action Japanese programming on TV, except for Godzilla.

According to the latest "Wizard," an Alex Ross Gatchaman is in the works. The line-up may be expanded from five team members so the story can be extra long.

What about live action movies?
I really enjoyed "Brother" when it was playing during the summer... I just watched "Battle Royale" after putting my littlest sis to bed- still don't know what to make of it, really.

1 EMERGENCY! 2 DEKARANGER! 3 ACTION! 4 PERFECT! 5 GET ON!
I think i watch too much of this show..
I'll go for something from that "Ultraman" era. . .SPECTREMAN!
Spectreman is one of those two great tastes that taste great together, right up there with chocolate and peanut butter. Allow me to explain.
Imagine Ultraman--lots of growing giant and fighting monsters and stuff. You fixed on that? OK, Good. Now add talking apes as the evil masterminds behind it all.
I'm serious. Monkeys. The whole evil operation was run by two monkeys in what looked like a utility shed with lots of blinky lights and TV screens. Now when you bundle that up with English dubbing by people I'm virtually certain had no idea what the hell they were looking at, and it spells FUN.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (not the rest... though Zeo, in Space, and DinoThunder are pretty good)
Masked Rider
VR Troopers

I loved Spectreman. Another interesting point about it was that unlike Ultraman, Spectreman had superiors he had to answer to, and there were times they wanted him to do some pretty harsh things.
An episode I remember pretty clearly was the evil genius monkey (Dr. Gori) had created a nasty super-virulent disease and infected some people with it. Spectreman sealed up these folks in their home so they wouldn't infect people, but got orders from his bosses that for the greater good, these people had to be destroyed. He refused, got deactivated and exiled into space, but then was told that he would be sent back only if he followed orders. The end of the show had him just about to blast the folks, but was stopped by his bosses at the last second, saying that they had found a potential cure. If he alterd some of the frequencies of his energy blaster, it might be possible to destroy the virus without harming the people. If it worked, the people would be safe. If not. "you still will have done your job." Needless to say, it worked.
I loved some of the cartoons brought over, Tranzor Z aka Mazinger Z, Voltron, Robotech, we need more old school giant robot shows.

IRON CHEF!
This is the best Japanese live action show on right now, hands down.
Though I must also vote for Most Etreme Elimination Challenge. Though the show was pretty much remade into a new show for Spike TV's audience, with a completely different *plot* and character names, etc, it is still one of the funniest shows on TV. Just watching it brings a half hour long smile to my face.
The best was when the guy attempted the back flip and landed on his neck... I was watching it with my college roommate last semester and we couldn't stop laughing for at least 5 minutes.
So yeah, that's what I say is the best right now.

I remember watching Ultra Man and Johnny Sako. Those were cool shows. Also, Iron Chef. I saw Iron Chef before it came to America, it was all in Japanese and it was an egg battle. I didn't get to see all of it but it was pretty cool to watch.
Godzilla movies or any Japanese sci-fi movie with the gaint monsters.:D
Also, there was another show I use to watch, I can't remember the name of it.
There were three aliens living in a volcano with an old man. The aliens could change into jet planes. They were a family, son, the mother and the father was a giant gold plated robot. The son befried a human boy and the boy carried around a whistle. If the human got into trouble he would blow the whistle and the gold plated robot would show up and kick some monster butt.
Has anyone else every seen this show? If so, what was the name of the show?

Sentai, Abaranger (known here as Dino Thunder) I am currently enjoying. Wasn't "Daredevil" modeled like "Live-Action Anime"? "Black Mask" was pretty cool. In my golden ages, I loved "Voltron" and would "Transformers" be a japanese import? I also loved the "Masked Rider". It was awesome. Oh, has anyone here seen "The Princess Blade"? I heard good reviews about it.

Iron Chef is definitely my favorite live-action Japanese import and I get to watch it twice on weekends. Thank you, Food Network! :D
I also hope to see Johnny Sako someday, especially since one of my favorite guitarists, Buckethead, is slightly obsessed with him, and I trust his judgment. Heh.

Naturally, all of PR, but also Zyuranger, Dekaranger, Gransazer, and Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. "Dark power, make up!" makes it sooooo good.

My favorite Japanese shows aren't shown on TV here so I rent them from the local Japanese grocery. Right now I'm watching Platinum LondonBoots, in which they're doing the usual competition of seeing which team can round up the most females with huge, er, tracts of land to get in the hot spring with. All PG of course, though there's a fair amount of leering.
My favorite shows of all time are the sketch comedies Gottsu Ee Kanji(1991-96) and WarauInu no Boken (1998-2001?). Very similar to Saturday Night Live or Monty Python. You might find some of the "Best of" tapes at the local Japanese video rental outlet.

Iron Chef- the ONLY reason to watch/have the Food Network
Most Extreme Elimination Challenge (based off footage from Takeshi's Castle)- One of three shows that are Spike TV's best (the other 2 being wrestling and Joe Shmo)
VR Troopers (based off Metal Hero footage)- I still want a third season (like most VRT fans)
Power Rangers (based off Sentai footage)- 'Nuff Said!
