The recent poll on which was the best or most favorite cartoon duck brought the comment from yours truly that the little duckling from the T&J toons was conspicuous by his absence... (Of course nobody else agreed, as the character is sooooo beloved, cough, cough :D)). There has of course been some debate as to his real name, with many of his "fans" ;) dubbing him with a nom du voyage of "Yakky Doodle" after his identically drawn and voiced later H&B clone (different paint job). It would appear though that by 1956 the MGM studio and/or publicity department was referring to the critter as (I'm not kidding on this) "Lucky Ducky"... Sooooo is this what Dirty Harry was referring to when he said "Do you feel lucky punk???" ;)

Yes Dave, "feeling a duck" is indeed illegal in 14 out of the 15 counties in Arizona...;) I'm not sure what the law is on it in Yavapai County... Will have to research it, and as soon as I find out I'll update you on this burning issue :D

Buuuuuut on the original topic it would appear that Lucky Ducky was the approved Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera name for the little duckling. Why they would have chosen/approved such a name is beyond my feeble powers of comprehension...

Nooooo Dave I'll pass on the hemp... And of course the real-life Jojo (first husband of Linda McCartney) ended up blowing his brains out. Much like a fellow 'pharmaceutical' using comic-book store owner I used to know... Not pretty thoughts, that's for sure. Such thoughts make the H&B innocent little ducky seem much more appealing.

suicide is a result of dope?! Art Linkletter's given up on that argument...

(I'm still here..)

kids:

Art Linkletter's daughter committed suicide (jumping out of a window) while under the effects of LSD in the late 60's (she had been under treatment for her suicidal tendencies for several years) - Art made a crusade (funny how often that word is popping up) of vilefying drugs and their users (and, by extension, all counter-culture types) - he has since apologized

Siiiiiiigh.... Dave~

I just presented two cases, sorry, didn't mean to impugn or anger you, period. Regrettably, suicide happens all the time in our strange, strange world. But the effects of a lifetime of heavy narcotics on permanently or temporarily emotionally unbalanced individuals (as in my comic book seller) is a recipe for disaster.

If you want to make a suitable case for how drugs have enriched peoples lives then go for it... Maybe you can do it... Though a friend of mine (formerly a 20-year addict) summed it up a couple weeks back with a mischievous grin, "Yeah that's right, when I was a kid I said 'Mommy, when I grow up I wanna be a drug addict". And he added, "Ya know I made a LOT of money in my field, but I don't have ANY of it, or anything to show for it, all gone and wasted on drugs").

But Dave, maybe you can make a case for the benefits of stoned living...

Meanwhile back in the happy world of cartoons...

Back in the world of cartoons...

The name Lucky Ducky originates with Tex Avery's cartoon LUCKY DUCKY. The use of the identical green/red color scheme for the T&J duck in at least one appearance (THE DUCK DOCTOR, I think) shows that Hanna and Barbera intended to make their duck the same, if only retroactively.
In the comics, after a trial appearance as Downhearted Duckling, the Tom and Jerry duck settled down as Little Quacker (or just Quacker). He occasionally had his own stories in the 1950s and 1960s.

wellll...

we do seem to be getting a bit afar of the name of the little duckie...

and, just how many drugs do we wish to include in the 'bad' category?

How about:

alcohol?

Valium?

Prozac?

(and, since I do not wish to offend more, I will NOT suggest that suicide is not always undesirable, and, just maybe, each person gets to decide... see 'the theme from MASH' - kids - see the movie if you want the lyrics)

Jerry Garcia was one of the most life-affirming people - he died of the result of a long-term affection for heroin. but not because he wished to die...

What a long, strange, trip its been...
