Naruto manga had the worst translations ever this month.

They change Sasuke's fireball attack to "Blaze of Glory"WTF? And then they go and DONT translate Bloodline Limit.
Stupid, horrible, bah

I'm rather enjoying Hikaru No Go. The character designs are so fun! I keep forgetting the ghost is actually a guy though. He looks so much like a girl...

So are they censoring DBZ now? The image on Page 216 (DBZ: 177 * Cell vs. #16) originally had Tenshinhan, Trunks, Yamcha, and Kuririn flipping Cell off, but their middle fingers are drawn away in the American version of Shonen Jump. And wasn't #16's attack on the last panel of page 235 supposed to be "Hell Blast?" Why call it "Inferno Blast," especially considering how often they used the word "hell" in this month's installment of Shaman King?

And as far as Naruto goes...
Sasuke isn't really dead, is he???

EDIT: I just found a low-quality scan of the uncensored image:

I feared this would happen... SJ has become too popular and now issues will probably have edited manga. Baka! I hope the Graphic Novels remain uncut.

Teek
01-10-2004, 12:29 AM
In regards to Sasuke:

Sasuke's not dead, don't worry. It will be a bittersweet explanation for why he is still alive.

BTW UGH! to some horrible Shonen Jump translations, come on SJ, it can't be that hard to get an accurate translation.

Is any of the other manga edited? In SK they were refering to the place, so maybe that's why it got edited.

I read the rest of it.
Naruto- 10/10- I don't care if they changed an attack name.
Hikaru no Go- 9/10- I'm really getting into this series. I too, have trouble remembering Sai is a man.
Yu Yu Hakasho- 10/10- I've already seen the anime, but I enjoyed this just the same.
I don't read YGO! or DBZ.

Just wondering, is anyone else having problems recieving their copies? I tried to buy one at the bookstore on Sunday (As most of the stores stock their copy the Sunday before it's supposed to go on sale), but nobody had it, not even Suncoast. I check back Tuesday and even though it was around 6PM, they hadn't recieved their copies yet. Wednesday comes, and most of the stores are sold out! Grr!

Anyway, story-wise:
Naruto - So I guess the whole "Naruto runs and distracts Haku while Sasuke tries to burn him" routine was anime-only. Well, they're at my favorite part of the fight right now. Next issue (hopefully): Kakashi shows us why he's a badass.
Shaman King - Interesting way of ending the Tokagero storyline. And it sets up nicely for when a certain someone becomes a Shaman (Oh please, as if you couldn't see it coming a mile away).
Dragonball Z - This issue was pretty fun, as Cell beat down Piccolo, absorbed 17, and took a major chuck from 16's head. I kinda wish they stopped with Cell transforming and gave the extra issue to Yu-Gi-Oh! or One Piece.
One Piece - Grr, I hate where they left off! Well, I wouldn't be as angry if the thing came out more than once a month, but still. I wanna see Zoro kick some ass (Swordsmen rock).
Yu-Gi-Oh! - Eh, this issue was OK. Yugi wiped the floor with Mokuba (I still can't stomach his evilness due to the anime) and began his Duel with Kaiba. I kinda miss the Duel Platforms from the anime. Wow, a wooden table, how exciting.
Hikaru no Go - The only thing I didn't like about this issue was that it featured very little Akane. Other than that, it was excellent. I like how Sai and Hikaru are becoming more and more comfortable with each other, and how Hikaru still doesn't like playing Go.

::snicker:: I still think Baja's assessment of Hikaru no Go is worth repeating:
"Touya Akira's existance is proof that there are alternate universes, and in every universe, there's an incarnation of Ichijouji Ken lurking about, waiting to be discovered by a manga artist."

The middle finger means a bit different in Japan vs America. It's more benign in Japan. An old Newtype comic strip made fun of this, with a character flipping off a Japanese and not much happens, then he flips off an American and gets decked for it. :D

Hikaru's Go 6/10: This certainly got much better than last issue's, I might really start to like this when I start to get the game of go more.

Naruto 7/10: While not my favorite Shonen Jump manga, these were still some good chapters.

One Piece 4/10: Despite being my favorite SJ manga, this month was just disapointing. I hate it when manga is held out for a long time til the suspense comes. This month just seemed lazy.

Shaman King 9/10: Excellent, they really finished the Tokageroh story well.

Dragon Ball Z 7/10: Very good, I probably would have liked this month better. Had I not seen the anime do this years ago, although nothing really bad though.

Yu Yu Hakusho 8/10: Same deal as with DBZ, I would have enjoyed this better had I not seen this in anime form before.

Yu-Gi-Oh! 9/10: Excellent, too bad it will become like the anime evantuallly :( .

Well, I'll be damned, Naruto is finally on the covers again. That hasn't happened since his premiere..I'm impressed.:p

Naruto rocked this month...I don't want to be spoiled but god I hope Sasuke isn't dead. And I want Naruto to kick that boy's ***** so bad...

Yu-Gi-Oh and One Piece come in second. The rest was just filler since I've seen the anime versions, but still good none the less.:)

I've been catching up because I usually only glance over the mag unless there is something I really want to read (though I eventually read all of it), and you know what... One Piece is freak'n hillarious stuff! The guy stuck in the treasure chest... Nami stabbing Luffy with a needle (because its the only way to hurt him), and Luffy in general. Its just genuniely funny.

That's one of great things about Shonen mangas (most at least). Not only are they great for action but they're also great for laughs!

::shrug:: Sometimes it's all in the artist. While I have no explanation for any feminine-looking male Naruto characters (or Kurama, for that matter, since Yoshihiro Togashi is male too), Akira and Sai are under an influence that is extremely common: the female artist. Artists tend to draw what they know, so women artists are typically much more comfortable with the female face and form. So, even when we draw guys (yeah, I'm guilty of this too), we tend to soften the features, sometimes to the point that male characters are mistaken for females.

After reading this month's issue, (especially Naruto) I can't help but feel a little frustrated over the fact that I'm so behind the rest of the world, plot wise.

Because, with the exception of DBZ, this is my first exposure to all of the series that are in Shonen Jump.

I'm glad that there are at least a few people on this board that are in the same situation as me...

Of course, after two awesome Non- Yu-Gi-Oh! covers, it's about time we had another one, right? Anyway, this issue's pretty good. There's an article on Jump Festa 2004, it announced that Prince of Tennis and Bleach were coming in April and May. They're going to be in graphic novel format. -Major TomTHAT IS CORRECT.

The magazine should be called Shonen "Buy Our Graphic Novels" Jump.

As I said in the Bleach and PoT topic (below), they should make two Shonen Jumps - one being the mainstream version with DBZ, YGO, OP, SK, Naruto, YYH, and HNG, and the second being one with DB (left off from the DB monthly comics), RK, Bleach, PoT, UM, KOTZ, and possibly SandLand reprints. That'd be great.

Well he does get it at a more convenient price than 7.95 and in a book the size of a normal magazine. Also I'd say it's better to make it last as opposed to releasing it as quickly as possible (which = rushjob, which is not cool).

I liked this Shonen Jump. here's what I think about it:

YGO:"Dragon Cards"? We're getting closer to the anime as we speak!

Naruto:So the Gato saga is over? What happened to him?

YYH:In the anime,if I'm right, Byakko just "exploded", not going all balloonish. And Yusuke is right. That's a bad case of gas.

Hikaru no Go: So Hikaru no Go now has a real anime-like plot?

Like the Prince of Tennis preview. But it should be in the magazine, so we can have 8 mangas.

Overall, this Shonen Jump was good.

Pretty badass scene, too.Yep, the manga is more violent in a couple respects. i.e. Zabuza kills him in the same fashion but he fully slices off Gato's head, the Raikiri causes Kakashi's arm to go all the way through Haku's chest, Zaku's arm fully gets blown off after Shino's insects plug up the holes in his arm, etc.

Sorry if you like the series, but Prince of Tennis sucked, and it sucked big. Ryoma is just another preteen boy hero, who's a cocky little brat who thinks he's bigger than Jesus. All the other characters are one dimensional, and I've seen them all before. Sasabe is another cocky bastard who's older than Ryoma, so he thinks he's better than him. Whoo hoo. Great adversary... And then the girl's just another girl who obviously likes Ryoma, but he doesn't like her, because she screwed something up for him. I might be wrong, but this is the impression I got so far. Another thing that might bias my opinon, is that it's about tennis. I can't possabaly see how you could build an engaging story about tennis. At least not one that lasts for five years. (And still going.) And so what if it's the first chapter? I'm fairly patient, but the first chapter of a manga should at least be somewhat interesting, so it can keep me on board for the second chapter. I'm sorry if this sounded like a rant, but this is what I think of the the series so far. Based on word of mouth alone, I'll probabally read the first graphic novel in the store.

Sooo... You're basing your opinion on the first 20 or so pages of what might not even be the first full chapter? That's like watching the first 10 minutes of the first episode of an anime and saying you hate it. The series obviously has some sort of hook if it's lasted so long.

Yay! Next issue we meet Gaara (the red-head) and Rock Lee ("Fuzzy Eyebrows" XD), two seriously fan-favorite characters!

As for this issue...I always disliked Kuwabara vs. Byakko in the anime (loved Kuwie vs. the henchdogs though) and here it's pretty much the same.

Perfect Cell finally arrives in Shonen Jump, though I don't like how it's not the tall green column of energy the anime is.

I always found it odd that Zabuza just changes his tone in a snap like that. Maybe if he was shown with a Haku montage along with Naruto's words, it would be better. But alas, Naruto falls into the same trap as other anime series. The bad guy is out to kill them and the good guys hate them, and 10 minutes later the good guys mourn the bad guys as if they were brothers. Oh, and I LOVED the scenes where Inari shows up, Gato is killed, and when the bridge is named.

As for One Piece, it's about time! I've been waiting for Luffy & Zoro to really get serious against Kuro, and it's finally started.

Shaman King: I love Yoh & Anna's antics always, and this one is one of the best. I do wish they kept the name "Oracle Bell" instead of "Oracle Pager." Oh, and introduction of HoroHoro!

Finally, Yu-Gi-Oh! becomes filler, but we get some background on Jonouchi. Decent this month.

I liked the PoT preview and now I wanna read the rest.

Hikaru no Go's getting pretty good. I like that Hikaru is now finally getting into Go, though he's not using Sai much earlier than I thought he would.

Well, there was no talkback thread,so I decided to do one. Enjoy.

YGO- The powerful "Dragon Cards". Is it just me or it the author hinting at the Egyptian God cards for years from now? :D

One Piece- Part 1 of Luffy vs. Kuro. In a sense, it's freak vs. freak. :P

DBZ- Perfect Cell vs. Vegeta. No funny comment.

Naruto- We get introduced to some new classmates of Naruto's, Gaara of the Desert and Rock Lee. Rock Lee doesn't have that anime-like eyes, does he? H elloks like a normal human being, without turning into a rock.(BTW, I imagine Gaara voiced by Dave Wittenberg and Rock Lee by Derek Steven Prince.)

Hikaru no Go- Hikaru's first match on a Go team.

Yu Yu Hakusho- Round 2 of Kuwabara vs. Byakko, and only part of Hiei vs. Seiryyu. Seiryyu is probably where Beyblade's Draggon came from.

Shaman King- First part of Horo Horo vs. Yoh. Good thing he won't be called Trey Racer. (And I imagine Horo Horo voiced by Joshua Seth.)

Well, now's the time to discuss your opinion.

I knew that the 4 Saint Beasts were from Japanese mythology. That just wasn't what I typed.

Gara is my favorite new character in Naruto. He is the epitome of cool.

Anzu looked hot in that bikini. I'm serious.

Just wondering: do Butchie and Siam have normal human hands?

Hiei is THE coolest Yu Yu Hakusho characters IMO. Killing a drawing of a Kyoto god takes some guts.

Like I said before, Hikaru no Go's coolest character is Tetsuo, who should have Eric Stuart as his VA.

Inside this month's issue:

Cover: Yugi holding a doll of his Hikari side and some dice. This shoulda been next issue's cover, but oh well. It also includes a scaled-down version of this month's DBZ pin-up, and a funky looking Yoh.

Naruto: Just how strong of a fighter could this Rock "Fuzzy Eyebrows" Lee be? Naruto and Sasuke aim to find out as the Chunin Selection Exams finally begin!
Comments: Pretty cool fight, though definately not Rock Lee's best. Next issue is the written exam (I'm assuming) which is one of my favorite episodes in the anime.

Shaman King: Yoh and Horohoro begin their Shaman Fight, with Horohoro showing off some very powerful ice attacks. However, Yoh isn't ready to give up quite just yet!
Comments: Ah, this fight is even better in the manga than in the anime. I like the crazy ways Horohoro is drawn, especially in color.

Hikaru no Go: It's the finals of the Go Tournament, as Kaio's Go Players are shown to be really tough. Can Hikaru and his teammates pull it off? Meanwhile, Akira finally pulls himself together after his defeats, Hikaru focuses in on a goal, and it seems Akari is becoming interested in Go...
Comments: This issue was pretty nice, though the finals kinda disappointed me. I like Akira's reaction to where the Haze Go Club is playing.

One Piece: While Zoro and Usopp chase after Django, Luffy continues his battle with Captain Kuro, who unleashes an attack that devestates the entire battlefield! Plus, Django is about to get Kaya to sign the will! However, Luffy and Usopp have some powerful hits of their own to deliver!
Comments: Wow. Luffy's hit was really painful-looking. Not quite InuYasha-being-body-slammed-by-stone-Togekyo, but still painful.

Dragonball Z: Trunks powers up in order to take out Cell, but he can't seem to land a hit! In the Room of Spirit & Time, Goku announces a new training reigime for him and Gohan, while on Earth, Cell has a new dastardly announcement!
Comments: I kinda liked the fight between Trunks & Cell in the anime better. The way Trunks' aura was handled made the fight cooler.

YuYu Hakusho: There's only one Saint Beast left, Suzaku! While Kuwabara, Hiei, and Kurama deal with the Humanoids, Yusuke races to find that Suzaku has ordered his bug-infested minions to kill Keiko!
Comments: Here's hoping this fight lasts better in the manga than in the anime.

Yu-Gi-Oh!: Yugi & Jonouchi come upon one of Jonouchi's old friends, who is the head of a dreaded Yo-Yo gang! (I'm serious.) After that, everyone's favorite silver-haired, evil bandit arrives for the first time. Just what does Evil Bakura have planned for Yugi?
Comments: And now we come to the only part of the original series I ever saw. Now I'll actually know what's going on.

Extras include: Pick your 3 favorite Shaman King characters to win a special drawing by Hiroyuki Takei of Yoh, feature on Knights of the Zodiac, a look at Zombie Powder, a look at the YuYu Hakusho TCG, Naruto, YuYu, and DBZ Fan art, a new Letters Page, a new DBZ pin-up with Captain Black & kid Goku, plus a look at some of the new monsters that will be in the upcoming Yu-Gi-Oh! Movie!

As usual, it's time for my comments

Hikaru no Go: I can't believe Tetsuo resigned from his game and from playing Go. So I guess that means he won't be around any more? :(

YYH: Yusuke vs. leader of the Saint Beasts, Suzaku (the phoenix).I promise this fight will rock.

Yu-Gi-Oh:That was funny, Honda's quote "In the hands of an idiot, a yo-yo is a dangerous weapon"

Shaman King: See last part of YYH comment. And why didn't they say Horo Horo was called Trey Racer in the anime?

Naruto:Short fight of Rock Lee vs. Sasuke was pretty good.

One Piece:Woah! Is Captain Kuro dead now!?

About Hikaru no go:

Yes, thats it for Tetsuo when it comes to Go playing. He'll make appearances, but not have any more major roles. In fact, he doesn't even stay in the story for that much, he's basically in it for the first 1/4 of it. Still a cool character though.

4Kids made his "international name" Trey Racer, but in an ep, he also said his real name is Horohoro.

Kinda like with Jackie Chan, that is not his real name - his real name is in Chinese which non-Chinese would have a hard time with. Many Chinese have alternate "approximation" names like that. Many other people around the world do it too all the time, to make it easier for outsiders to call them.

Hehehe. I actually did read this issue.. Just talking about it now. The cover was OK, i didn't mind Yugi being on it, and the heiroglyphs on the back was a nice touch.

Naruto - We get to see Rock Lee unleash some of his moves on Naruto and Sasuke, embarassing both of them, and telling Sasuke he really is after a member on his own team.. And we see the debut of Guy.. who is Kakashi's arch-rival.. but I must say that pose at the beginning.. was just.. wrong. I remember watching the anime part of this, and I don't remember Guy posing like that..

One Piece - That was a crazy attack by Captain Kuro on his own crew, leading them to cheer for Luffy, which leads Luffy to tell them he's still going after them too. Usopp and Zoro get to Kaya and the kids just in time.. Two big hits to end the chapter on.. wow.

Hikaru no Go - So Hikaru and the gang continue the tournament, and end up winning, at least until one of the kids there realizes that Hikaru doesn't go to Haze, thus disqualifying them. It was nice to see them start to set up a Haze Go Club, one step at a time amd Akari going to join a Go club as well.

Yugioh - We see some of the story of Junichi's past in a gang come to light again as his former leader wants him back, and thus a yo yo duel begins.. Very weird, but enjoyable. And at the end we see the emergence of Bakura.. should be an interesting shadow game involved there.

Shaman King - Wow, that match against Horo Horo and Yoh got pretty intense. Yoh kept meeting the challenges put in his path and it looks like Horo Horo is going to give it all he has.. This match was entertaining in the anime, and it's coming out to be the same in the manga.

DBZ - Wow, i'd never seen this part in the anime. That is crazy, Trunks looked awesome all powered up.. but his downfall was not thinking things through.. Sure he became strong, but his mass slowed his quickness. Very deceptive. Cell decides to make a tournament called the "Cell Games" and Trunks is going to get a haircut.. :p

YuYu Hakusho - I always liked this part in the anime, and it hasn't changed with the manga. Yusuke taking on Suzaku, Botan and Keiko taking on the demon possessed humans. All the good stuff.

I really enjoyed this issue, not to mention the DB pinup included and the next issue looks pretty good too. Can't wait to read it.

My thoughts:

Yu-Gi-Oh!: Poor Bakura. He seems like a nice fellow, and then gets himself possessed. I'm not that familiar with YGO; does he ever regain control?

Naruto: You know, looking at how much Rock Lee and Guy look alike, it remeinded me of the title page of Ch. 13 (August 2003 issue). Poor poor Sasuke; getting beat by a guy with a bowl-cut. It's sad, really; he even pulled out the Sharingan - No Good! And you gotta feel for Sakura. Seriously; she's looking for the love of Sasuke, but the only boys interested are Naruto and Lee. (dodging Lee's kiss cracked me up).

Also, take a good look at the 2-page color spread at the beginning of this month's first chapter. Take a good look at Naruto.

Sakura's so going to kill him when she opens her eyes...:p

One Piece: Luffy's kicking major [lower cheeks]. That last attack (Gum-gum Bell!) looks especially painful. I thought it was cool that Django wasn't taken out by Zoro's Santoryu skills, but by Usopp's slingshot. And I'm liking those kids. Not much Nami this month, but he absence is certainly in character.(you'd think these pirates would have a bigger stash...)

I think I remember reading an interview where Oda-sensei said that Buggy was one of his favorite characters. I'm saying this because every issue since the end of the Buggy the Clown story arch there's been at least one chapter title page with Buggy running from some danger.

Hikaru no Go: Haze Wins! Haze Wins! Haze...is disqualified???
Bummer.
Akira is all bummed because he thinks Hikaru is better than him. If he only knew...
That Go set looks cruddy; Hikaru should've brought the one he found in Grandpa's place. Sure, it's bulky, and blood stained, but no-one can see the stain but Hikaru, and exercise is good for you, especially if your only extracuriccular activity is Go Club.
Speaking of Grandpa, I wonder if he'd be willing to play Hikaru now?
Boy, Hikaru lucked out. Guess he was going to go to Haze after all. Weird that the guy from his neighborhood went to Kaio, but I'm willing to bet that the Japanese educational system is much different from what we got here in the States. But yeah, he lucked out; those Kaio uniforms look cheezy.
More Akari is always good. She's so sweet! :)

Shaman King: I'm liking this fight. Lotsa great attacks, most notably Anna's powerful "Inn Hostess Punch!" :p I have to wonder about what Yoh said about Harusame; he said "So many people have touched it, all of them powerful." I wonder if that's including the curators at the museum where Yoh found it?

Also, my fave Shaman King characters are (in order) Manta, Yoh, and Ryu.

Dragon Ball: Ohh, too bad, Trunks. YOU FAIL. Get a haircut.
I'm looking foward to the Cell Games. This is going to be cool. (unlike everyone else in the world, I have not seen that part of the tv series)
In response to the last 2 pages: I never forgot Son Goku.

Yu Yu Hakusho: Note to Suzaku: When trying to keep off of Yusuke's bad side, don't try to off the girl he's sweet for. That'll just make him angry.
Have I ever said that Keiko and Botan are really cute? Togashi-sensei certainly knows how to draw cute girls! :D
Mr Takenaka deserves better. (remember? He chewed out Mr. Iwamoto and "Mr. Buckteeth" at Yusuke's wake)
I hope he BBQs that bird!

Yu-Gi-Oh!: Poor Bakura. He seems like a nice fellow, and then gets himself possessed. I'm not that familiar with YGO; does he ever regain control?
In Duelist Kingdom, Good Bakura is trapped in one of the Duel Monster cards, but Yugi frees him and sends Evil Bakura into the Shadow Realm until Pegasus accidentally frees him. In the anime-only, Evil Bakura tries to get Mokuba to be a new host, but Honda stops him. Evil Bakura then gouges out Pegasus's Millenium Eye and seemingly kills him.

Battle City, however, is different. First, Marik tries to destroy Yugi's puzzle, but Evil Bakura, pretending to be good, helps out, secretly infecting the puzzle. He teams up with Marik so that he can gain the rest of the Millenium Items, and enters the Tournament. He loses his first Final Round match, even with Marik's help, to Yugi's Egyptian God Card: Slyfer the Sky Dragon. Yami Marik is released later, while "Good" Marik hides within Bakura. He challenges Yami Marik to a Duel, and loses. "Good" Marik resides within Tea, Evil Bakura is exploring the Millenium Puzzle, and Good Bakura is seemingly dead.

Actualy, I like Hikaru no Go better than I thought I would!

I don't see why Naruto is so popular. It's okay, but the fights are confusing and poorly coriographed, and there is too much high school drama going on. I also don't like the ninja uniforms, they look more like comando outfits than ninja garb.

For the manga whose anime have already aired on TV:
- DBZ: always skim through it... nothing I haven't already seen
- SK: once the anime passed the manga, same situation with DBZ
- YYH: same as DBZ, but may change soon since I didn't watch Season 2
- YGO: reading now, but don't know when it finally reaches Series 2

For the manga whose anime hasn't:
- OP: rocks in every way, definitely the best manga in the mag
- N: for some reason, I've zoned out of this for the past few months
- HNG: forget Yu-Gi-Oh cards, someone get me a Go board!

Another good thing... for the first time since the month after Hikaru No Go debuted, they changed the order of what appears where in the magazine. Which is good... it's nice to have a variety of things and not to always expect the same manga in the same place.

I actually like Kakashi's uniform, it's just Naruto's outfit I'm not fond of.
Really, since ninjas are pretty much feudal era commandos, the uniforms and outfits make sense in a way.

How is Naruto poorly coriographed?
Some of the fights are not easy to follow. I many times have to look closely to see who is kicking whom. Though, this is just for hand-to-hand combat fights. Any fight involving Kakashi or ninja magic is usually well done.

It's time for the newest issue of Shonen Jump! In this issue:

Hikaru no Go: While Hikaru trains for the upcoming tournament and tries to figure out who will be the third player in the tourney, Akari asks Hikaru many times to teach her to play Go. Akira joins the Kaio Go Club to hone his skills, but the upper classmen take insult to the fact that he automatically joins the team and plot to humiliate him...
Comments: A decent issue this month, mainly a bridge to serve until the tournament. The upperclassmen-hate reminds me of Prince of Tennis.

YuYu Hakusho: Things look grim as Keiko & Botan run from their lives by a horde of possessed humans and Yusuke gets tortured by the now-seven Suzakus. Just when all seems lost, Yusuke pulls a reserve of Spirit Energy from out of nowhere. However, is it enough?
Comments: This is actually my favorite part of the fight, as Yusuke gets powered up after being tortured. At least that damn bird isn't as annoying in here...

Yu-Gi-Oh!: Yugi starts to suspect Bakura isn't himself as the gang play Monster World, a figurine-based RPG. Things really start to go awry as Bakura shows off his power!
Comments: Ever since I saw a clip of the original YGO series, I've been wanting to see this storyline. It's getting good now.

Dragonball Z: Goku & Gohan exit the Room of Spirit and Time and are informed about the Cell Games. Goku makes a startling decision as he & Gohan head home. Meanwhile, the hunt for a new Kami is on, and Hercule, the wrestler formerly known as Mr. Satan, vows to kill Cell...
Comments: Yes, Mr. Satan is now Hercule in the manga too. At least they mention he was Satan...

Naruto: As Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura re-unite with their former classmates Kiba, Hinata, Chouji, Ino, Shikamaru, and Shino, they meet up with the Shinobi from the Sound Village as well as a mysterious ninja named Kabuto. Then, the first exam begins...
Comments: This issue sets up two of my favorite moments in the anime, the written exam, and Shikamaru.

One Piece: Captain Kuro and Django are defeated, and Kaya is safe. It's time to head out to another adventure as Usopp makes a fateful decision.
Comments: A really nice breather issue after the suspenseful half-dozen past issues. Much needed.

Shaman King: HoroHoro and Yoh's battle comes to a thrilling conclusion, as the two Shamans go all out! After the battle, it's time for some nice R&R, until HoroHoro's sister, Pirka, comes to town!
Comments: I do wish they kept the second I in Pirika, it sounds so much better.

Extra stuff this month includes: Interview with Yu-Gi-Oh! creator Kazuki Takahashi, previews of Whistle! & BEET the Vandel Buster, More Go lessons, What to do with past Shonen Jump issues, How to draw Yami Yugi with Takahashi, YGO Tournament Update, YGO RPG Terminology, the latest Dragonball Z pinup (Featuring Krillin!) and fanart, Shaman King fan art and contest winners, plus Letters, an Ultimate Muscle video game interview, and a contest to win the three PC Yu-Gi-Oh! games!

As usual, it's my comment time.

-The finale of last month's One Piece looked like Luffy nearly killed Kuro. How can he recover that quickly?!

-So I guess Yusuke vs. Phoenix has 1 more issue, then Rescue Yukina?

-I think Tetsuo should have stayed with ther Go club until they got a new member. He is the coolest Hikaru no Go character. Eric Stuart or Ted Cole in his Lee/Kane voice would fit him perfectly.

-Ah,finally. The appearance of the controversial Mr. Satan/Hercule. He should have just been called Mr. Universe like Hyper Luigi said.

-Just wondering, was Monster World ever released as a real game. I say it could be fun.

-I don't recall seeing Shino, Shikamaru,Ino,or Choji in any other issues except 17. BTW, when this is dubbed,Melissa Fahn should be Ino, Darren Frost as Choji(Sloan of Medabots. It's scary that they look so much alike.), Bill Switser as Shikamaru Naru, Crispin Freeman as Kankuro/Itachi/Shino,and Bill Switser as Shikamaru Naru. If 4KIDS gets it, Choji will probably be named Joe Chubby.

-Pirika is sort of cute, but she's younger than I am.Rachel Lillis got her voice down pretty well.

Well hears my opinion on this issue.

Hikaru no Go: Akira joins Kaio's go club and we meet some majorly jelous guys. I liked the part with the girls asking Akira to play teaching game with them. Yuri(the blonde third year student) wants to go first, but Akira say he'll play her next time because those other girls asked first. Man Yuri didn't look very pleased with that. That one guy thought he was real slick by mirroring Akira's moves, but Akira winds up owning him anyways. And I thought that the whole exchange between Hikaru and Sai about umbrellas and sending a man to the moon was funny.

Yu Yu Hakusho: This is preaty much exactly the same thing I saw in the anime a long time ago. I liked Keiko and Botan's little trick, putting Keiko's scarf inside the locker to trick the possesed people while they hide behind the curtain to sneack up on them. Yusukes flash back to his traning with Genkai was funny. Then Yusuke blows the Suzaku's away with the shotgun but one withstands it, then gathers up energy from the dead bodies and forms seven Suzaku's again so this fight continuses for another issue.

Yu-Gi-Oh!: I gota agree with what Honda said about Jonouchi," This dip is totaly into it..." The gang seems to be doing allright until Dark Master Zorc shows up and Bakura starts to reveal his dark side. All of Yugi's friends get turned into miniatures one by one. Then Yugi asks for his soul to be put into a miniature which Bakura grants, not knowing about the other Yugi.

Dragonball Z: Not much to say about this. Like YYH I saw this a long time ago in anime form. I liked the part where Cell owns the entire Royal Defense Force. And it bings up some words of wisdom from the review of this episode at the beging of the next episode in the English dubed version,"When are they going to learn, you don't send out conventional milatary hardware to stop super villans."

Naruto: Once againg my favorite manga in Shonen Jump. Loved the stuff with Naruto's classmates. Naruto's opinons on Team 10( Shikamaru: Lazy Fool, Choji: Fat Fool, and Ino: Fool for Sasuke) was preaty good. I liked it when Kiba said," Looks like the gangs all hear," and Shikamaru replied," Including you...unfortunatly!" I liked how Hinata apoligised to Naruto for Kiba's behavior. I just gota say that Hinata's my favorite female chacter in Naruto. I think her crush on Naruto is one of the cutest things ever. I loved it when Naruto exclaimed that none of the others were going to beat him. Ino yelling out," What's his problem?!" and Sakura thinking," Typical. Too stupid to know he's got problems." And the part at the end after Ibiki says if a member of the team loses all their points then the whole team is disqualified. Both Sakura and Sasuke are like," What?!" and Naruto goes," I can feel them both from here.. both wanting to kill me already!" That was very funny.:anime:

One Piece: Not much to say about this one. The Black Cat pirates are finaly beaten and Kaya and the village are safe. Usopp makes Kaya and the kids promise not to tell what happened so they can keep their peace of mind and they agree. I liked the part where people are over sleeping and have trouble geting motivated for the day without Usoop causing his daily ruckus.

Shaman King: Yoh and Horo Horo's fight comes to an end with Yoh the victor. Everyone is celabrating until Pirka shows up. She frows a net arond her poor brother and drags him off. Manta comments that this is desturbingly familiar and Yoh says," Horo Hora...I feel for you man!" It ends with Kalim telling Silva that Yoh should forefit his next match because his opponet is a psychopath.

As for the other stuff, the Dragonball pinup is preaty cool. I liked the inerview with Kazuki Takahashi. And the manga explorer has me interested in Beet the Vandel Buster.

WTF are the Naruto translators smoking? At least their previous translations were coherent. In this one, when Naruto was describing Shino, he said "I don't know this guy from Adam." WTF is that supposed to mean?

Secondly, damn it! They are calling Luffy's ship the "Merry Go." What a load... in the original, its called the "Going Merry" - in English. That is way cooler than "Merry Go."

Also, DBZ and HNG's translators are spot on. Why are Naruto's and One Piece's so shoddy?

In the original version, all Devil's Fruit users use the name of their fruit to precede their attack. Hence: Gommu-Gomu (Gum-Gum) Bazooka etc.

Not to be picky, but if it were meant to be "Gum," it would be written as "Gamu" (ガム, which means "Gum"), not "Gomu" (ゴム, which means "Rubber"). Sorry, but I just couldn't let that slide since I'm studying Japanese. :p

Hikaru no Go: Gets more interesting with each new installment! Being the undisputed number one player under 18 makes Akira unlikable to many fellow players, even though he doesn't want it that way. And Hikaru, geese, let Akari play! You need a third player, even if she's a beginner!

Yu-Gi-Oh: An alteration of Episode 13 of the second anime series (the one we got here)? Or Episodes 26 & 27 (the finale) of the first series? Whichever it is, it rules, and Yami Yugi and Yami Bakura prepare to square off!

Naruto: For the first time in months, I'm enjoying reading about the ninjas again! This test should be interesting... poor, poor Naruto! Or should it be poor Sasuke and Sakura for having Naruto as a teammate?

One Piece: The ending has come with a prologue (though I can't believe it's over already... really?) Glad for Usopp, though. What a legend he's leaving behind.

YYH, DBZ, and SK: Not making much of a comment since I saw the anime episodes being represented in these cases.

Cover: Yugi, Jounouchi, Anzu, Honda, and Bakura.

Features:

Beet the Vandel Buster video game, Kazuki Takahashi interview, WHISTLE! preview, The Truth Behind Whistle!, Dragon Drive Manga Explorer, Graphic Novel Feature, YYH and DBZ fanart, another DBZ pin-up, 200th Chapter Anniversary Special, some GBA stuff, Getting Go, Go Clubs, Ninja Exam, Yugi's New Friend, another Nihongo lesson (foodspeak), and a preview of the Yu-Gi-Oh! movie (plus a trivia).

Whistle!: underage smoking, hot teachers and soccer-tastic fun in this manga preview.
Shaman King: Yoh continues his quest to be the Shaman King as he squares off against the ghastly Faust VIII (8) in a heavily-censored battle arena (anime-wise at least), and also in the most sexified series of episodes (again anime-wise, also Uncut) that ever occured in Shaman King.
One Piece: Usopp has recently joined Luffy and crew. Ebonics, villains, and other things will pop up frequently as Luffy looks for the One Piece. Introduces Yosaku and Johnny, if they matter any. Oh, and Sanji, who KEEPS HIS CIGGY.
YuYu Hakusho: Yusuke continues up the tower of the Saint Beasts and continues his battle with Suzaku, leader of the beasts. Something that doesn't happen in the anime, and the delivery of the videotape that gives Kuwabara love.
Dragonball Z: Cell Games continue, but that's not important. Special chapter about Trunks appears here, with Future Gohan training Future Trunks to defeat the androids and save the future. Oh yeah, and the first match of the Cell Games has been decided: HERCULE VS. CELL!!!
Hikaru no Go: Akira gets challenged to Go matches with some people, under one condition - he has to play with his eyes shut. Hikaru looks for more Go members.
Naruto: The Ninja Exam continues, and Naruto, and everyone, has to discover the secret to passing the test.
Yu-Gi-Oh!: Yugi has been trapped into a doll, and now Yami has taken over his body to continue the game against Bakura. Yugi is determined to be the greatest Pokemon master of all time... and NEXT PHARAOH'S HINT: computer language.

And that's it.

Nope. Too bad. Still the "Merry Go". Gaara was just a little change and most people dont realize one added A, but Merry Go changed to Going Merry would confuse a lot of people. Sorry.

"The Evil Eye" which sounds really stupid, compared to "Byakuugan"
"Art of the Valentine" another great made up name.

Naruto: Name changes in Naruto are bugging me. Karasu is now...Scarecrow? Ino's (forgot the name) jutsu is now Art of the Valentine? The Byakugan is now the Evil Eye?!(they could have at LEAST used the translation of Byakugan(which is White Eye, IIRC)) The changing/romanizing of Gai's name to Guy still bugs me. The story was nice, but...also, the ninja exam gimmick was interesting(Naruto...the food! How many ways there are to skill an enemy with a spork! )

Shaman King: The conversiation about the crosses in the graveyard was funny. (Yoh:What's with the weird stones? Must be their favorite shape. Manta:It's not just for style! "That shape" has a religious sinificance for christans!) Faust's dissection of Manta(well, the part we saw, at least) was...disturbing, to say the least.

DBZ: Good ol' Mr.Satan/Hecule. Always good for a laugh. The histroy of trunks story was a nice bonus.

One Piece: Wow, I'm suprised that only Nami heard of Scurvy before...SAnji keeps his ciggy! Yay!

YYH: Not much to say about it...

Hikaru no Go: Poor Akira, he's so tortured...the keeping of the word "senpai" was a nice suprise ^_^

Yugioh: Yugi's gonna be the very best Monster Tamer there ever was. To tame them is real task, the train them is his cause. He wil ltravel across the land ,searching far and wide. Hey, aren't you being a bit harsh? Don't blame the entire company, blame the people that adapted the title. For example, Rurouni Kenshin, also a Shonen Jump title, has the original Japanese sword technique names with accurate translations as footnotes, none of the character names have been changed, and they even kept in a lot of honorifics! (Kenshin's 'Kaoru-dono', Tsubame's 'Yahiko-chan', etc.) Kenshin even says 'Oro?'!

Besides, I'd take Viz's name changes over TokyoPop's typos any day. I cringe when ever I see some mispelled words or bad grammar in 'Love Hina'.

Hikaru no Go: Hikaru's new recruit: a cheater or a mysteryious one?
Naruto: The Ninja Exam is over and THIS NINJA'S HINT: 'bluffing'
Shaman King: Faust VIII, part 2. Psychopath in his own right mind.
YYH: Rescue Yukina, part 1. I too wonder why such butt-uglys are drawn.
One Piece: Restaraunt antics, part 2. Just who is this whole arc's villain?
Decent issue, I'm not sure whether to renew my subscription or not...

As far as One Piece's main villain in the Baratie arc, he'll be appearing soon, as will another important character...

Yu Gi Oh

So, the coverage for the 'first series' is almost done, I've decided I'm only collecting the first 7 volumes of YGO!, the whole 'let's just make everything about Duel Monsters' is kinda lame.

Shaman King

Was this in the anime?! Oh man, my stomach hurts looking at when Faust did to Manta...

The show does involve a little dueling, yes... but not nearly as much as Duel Monsters.

Shaman King

Was this in the anime?! Oh man, my stomach hurts looking at when Faust did to Manta...Yes, it was, but it was heavily toned down (in the Japanese version too. I get a feeling of the English version being much worse).

Beet looks like another generic Shounen. Thank god all the good ones aren't previews(or have been released as previews in the past). Overall issue itself was nice I guess. Still hope Black Cat makes it.

Uh, yep.

Most likely, Viz is doing this to rise graphic novel sales.

There's nothing wrong with that. Faust is a cool character. He's not as cool as Guilty Gear's Faust. Nothing can compare it's cool factor to Faust. He's just that cool.

I don't think it would be healthy to crush on Faust. First date and already he has your heart....literally.

Wait, so I'm going to have to buy the graphic novels to get the series in order?

Yes, and it's also at a once-a-month rate.

I bet it's hard working at Viz, they're handeling about 13 series under the Shonen Jump name alone.

Well, Viz is promoting the chapters as stories never seen in the anime. I bet they'll end up feeling pretty dumb when Season Five rolls around...

...but I thought most fans would have liked the card game arc's more? Oh, well least we get egypt saga eairler@I think the point is that the kid anime fans will read ANYTHING Yu-Gi-Oh but the teens who are bored the "duel monsters" crap will only read stuff that isn't about the dueling. I think it was a smart move by Viz...
