View Full Version : Hamill to hang up The Joker's Hat?

Eh, where's life without a good, misleading thread title?
I was reading my latest issue of Star Wars Insider last night, and I stumbled across this in the interview they had with Mark Hamill...
http://wf.toonzone.net/birdboy/jokerinsider.jpg
Now...this could mean a couple things...
1) Hamill really isn't going to reprise his roll as Joker again. In which case, his last performance as The Joker was "Wild Cards"---one in which he never even used his signature laugh....
2) Joker isn't going to show up at all in the third season of Justice League...
3) The people at Insider are idiots and passed their idiocy onto Mark.
Just something I figured I'd bring up...

As sad as that is, maybe the Creative Team have made a decision to not use him again as a way to make what happened in the ROTJ flashback in continuity.
That being said, Mark Hammil will forever be the best Joker and whoever replaces him on the new, younger version of characters show, will not be as good, sorry.
And does anyone think theyre trying to create a new X-Men: Evolution type show, but just with Batman instead?

It's probably true.
Whoever becomes the VA for Joker will probably never be as good as Mark was.

At least he's leaving us wanting more.

That's pretty sad. Won't be the same without him and I certainly hope Conroy doesn't think about quitting anytime soon. Hamill's gonna be the Joker forever in my view.

I am very disappointed about this. I always try to copy Mark Hamill's Joker, the way he appeared on Batman. He will always be my favorite voice actor and the WB will ruin the Batman mytho with this new cartoon, especially without Bruce Timm and Company, Kevin Conroy, and Mark Hamill. My only hope is that Joker shows up on Justice League and that if Bruce Timm and Company makes another animated feature, the feature Mark Hamill as the Joker. I think this thread should have been called "Hamill's last laugh?".

You know what tho.. this sound more like the Batman -> Batman Beyond conversion. The fact that it mentions the Batman animated series will be ending... didn't it end a few years ago? Batman Beyond followed (with the only Hamill work in "Return of the Joker").
That doesn't make sense for Justice League as well as he's in like 1 or 2 episodes throughout the season (if you don't include other characters he voices).
Just a thot...

It does not surprise me. I'd figure the guy would be kind of happy to finally stop, after 12 years. I will miss his Joker voice, though. But, I won't hate a new Joker voice because of it (like the Daily/Newbern accident).

Well the facts are wrong, for starters. Any Batman series ended a long time ago, and Justice League, even if does have Batman, is not ending just to make room for a young Justice League series. Except for the '12 years' comment, this sounds like it's talking about the end of TNBA and the beginning of BB.

Well "Justice League" is not The Batman series, just like it isnt The Superman series, Flash series etc. so that part of the statement doesnt make a whole lot of sense. There are no current plans to end JL that most people know of and Batmans been over with. Unless thats what he mistakenly looks at JL as and if he "being in the know" is correct about Justice League being ended than thats a pretty big bag he just opened and any hope of going past a third season I guess is crushed.

i wouldn't worry too much. i doubt mark hamill would permanently hang up his hat as ol' joker. i wouldn't be too broken up if he didn't do any work on this new "THE BATMAN" for kidswb. seriously, i wouldn't start talking about him in the past tense already! goofy articles like this don't merit hard facts about his future work...
this is how speculation sets in and rumors start flying, only to be quickly shot down by an announcement like "It is confirmed that joker will appear in season 3 of jl...". this shouldn't be much cause for concern. i have a feeling this thread will be a few pages long though...

Great, looks like JL is gonna be cancelled.
:p
In all seriousness, I think that we should reserve judgement on everything until we find out just exactly what this new "Batman" series entails.

I'm interpreting it like this. "The Batman Series" is just wrong, or it references Batman in JL (Which is all that Joker has dealt with), or it references the old one.
Joker might not have any roles in the forseeable future of Justice League (Same with Grundy), which may either just allow RotJ to happen. Also, if "The Batman" is an animated take on Batman: Year One... would Joker necessarily have to be around then? Beyond succeeded with few referrences to Bruce's rogue's gallery, The Batman might as well.

anybody think it may be a misquote?

I think the Joker should be in one more episode and the episode should be huge. Not like Wild Card wasn't huge but the Joker had better episodes. But even if he's in another episode I'll always will want to see more of him.

I can't say I'm surprised that they're not bringing back the Joker for the new BATMAN series, considering that the voices for major characters like Batman and Catwoman have also been reported to be given to new actors.
I'm surprised that the WB did this, though. Yeah, a new creative vision is all well and good, but whatever happened to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality?

Call me crazy, but I think Hamill is solely referring to the new Batman series, meaning nothing in regards to his possible presence in Justice League. I don't see how this new Batman series could really affect the vocal casting of Timm's work. After all, we haven't heard Kevin Conroy standing up and talking about how "it's been a good run", right?

Without Hamill as The Joker, Conroy may not play Batman.

Why do you say that? Hamill may just be saying that for the first time in 12 years, someone other than himself is playing Joker. SW Insider made the comment about 'the Batman series ending for a new one', not Hamill. He has been Joker in Batman: TAS, TNBA, Superman: TAS, BB: ROTJ and Justice League for YEARS, its no surprise he'd comment that someone else is going to be the voice for Joker on a different show.
Unless we got full confirmation that Joker won't EVER appear in DCAU again (unlikely) or is getting replaced, I'm taking this merely as a misquote.

First off, there is no Batman series to end so the whole thing doesn't make much sense. I mean, I HIGHLY doubt they're going cancel Justice League just because of a new Batman series and just because Hamill won't be doing Joker on the new series doesn't have to mean that we won't ever hear Hamill's Joker voice on JL again.

I think he was refering to ending the continuity of the original Batman animated series. The new series is a total restart, with a new cast and crew.

Well I don't think it is because you fans won't allow it and it would be cancelled in a day beacuse of the death treats Kids WB will get. "stop this Batman or Pikachu gets it!!!"

That's what I read it as. Hamill is referring to the new franchise taking on the Bat and with that, a new voiced Joker. I think it's as simple as that.

Yeah, I think if you take the reference to "the Batman series ending" as the only misinformation, it makes sense. Basically, he will not reprise his role in the new series. But it's likely that he'll make the occasional Joker cameo in Justice League, because he doesn't have to be "on board" for any extended period of time. It can just be like any other job he takes.

Funny thing is.. and I mean NO offense to Mark Hamill, love all the stuff he's done, but I'd be grateful to keep uber-cool voice work like that of the Joker... that, IMHO, is his most successful work since Star Wars!
again, just an opinion. :)

Did you hear that?! It was my jaw dropping to the ground.
I never fathomed that WB would replace Hamill as the Joker! He's all but re-created that character for everyone!

He's all but re-created that character for everyone! :eek:I love Hamill as The Joker, but as I said in another thread about this new Batman series. If you're going to make it new, make it new. Either it's a new series or a remake of the old one. If it were my vote I'd go for a remake with the old VAs, but I don't get a vote and we're getting a new one.

I feel really bad for whoever takes over as the Joker...he's going to get a ton of criticizm from us fans....he has big shoes to fill!
Like I've said...I'll give the series a chance. I have to see some examples of the animation before I can say much more!

Hmm...I feel really bad for the entire cast, now that I think about it. "Man, you suck as Harley Quinn!" "Okay, you're a good Batman, but not as good as Kevin Conroy." Being them will not be pleasant for on the Internet.

I agree with Karkull. What George Newburn took will be nothing, the new VAs if they all get replaced will be butchered by the fan boys.

Well, this supposed "new series" is about the younger incarnations of the characters, so unless most of the old cast can "youngify" their voices, it's inevitable that they'd be replaced, so why not go for the clean sweep? It also goes without saying that these younger incarnations should not sound too much like their old mature voices, so I dunno how comparisons would even work.
